Stage 3
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/Other/Avenir/S3/P.jpg

We’ve had two rather surprising stage winners so far, let’s see if the top favorites can strike today. They are, again, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fes.png Kalaba and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/duo.png Hsu, the former with another chance to take the overall lead with a first or second place finish. A few small ramps in the final kilometers and a downhill finishing straight might throw some riders off, but this should still be a sprint finish.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/Other/Avenir/S3/01.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/phi.png Gorecki leads the first breakway attempt, followed by yesterday’s escapee pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/trg.png Larsen. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/vlv.png Schäppi, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/lpu.png Sajnok, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/azt.png Reyes and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/aeg.png Ferri are next in line.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/Other/Avenir/S3/02.jpg

A long string of riders tries to get away as well. The pace is high in the peloton now too, as they’re not willing to let that many escapees go.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/Other/Avenir/S3/03.jpg

For a short while, we have 19 riders up front, but that is not sustainable, and the pack brings them back quickly.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/Other/Avenir/S3/04.jpg

The next batch of riders is led by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/xr0.png Huynh and includes a couple of familiar faces like pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/trg.png Larsen, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/vlv.png Schäppi and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/lpu.png Sajnok as well as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/phi.png Bokeloh and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/mck.png Hoehn.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/Other/Avenir/S3/05.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/Other/Avenir/S3/06.jpg

Still trying to get away from the pack, the escapees just roll over the line at the first intermediate sprint at high pace. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/phi.png Bokeloh leads the way, followed by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/trg.png Larsen and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/lpu.png Sajnok. With those bonus seconds, Larsen moves all the way up to third overall at the moment.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/xr0.png Huynh wasn’t able to keep up with the group and is back in the peloton, which is still only 35 seconds behind the breakaway, with a number of teams leading the pursuit.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/Other/Avenir/S3/07.jpg

After the sprint, the peloton finally relents and gives the group some leeway. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/mck.png Hoehn is in trouble though; he briefly lost touch after the sprint and struggles to make it back to the front.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/Other/Avenir/S3/08.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/mck.png Hoehn reconnected after an exhaustive chase, but still has enough energy to deny pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/trg.png Larsen any bonus seconds that would have been crucial for the Dane. A second place here would have been enough to take the overall lead!

Instead, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/lpu.png Sajnok moves past him in the GC, himself now third overall with only a two-second deficit to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/itd.png Hodeg. Both of them might have a chance to take yellow at the final intermediate sprint - if they make it that far. The gap, having peaked at 4’30, is down to three minutes already and that sprint is 77 kilometers away.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/Other/Avenir/S3/09.jpg

The same three teams as yesterday lead the peloton to keep the breakaway close-ish. They look for a bit of redemption after disappointing results.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/Other/Avenir/S3/10.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/Other/Avenir/S3/11.jpg

The peloton is still a good bit behind, but to ensure they make it to the intermediate sprint, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/trg.png Larsen accelerates. While most of his companions are attentive, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/mck.png Hoehn immediately struggles.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/Other/Avenir/S3/12.jpg

Then, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/lpu.png Sajnok gets a small gap to the trio behind him.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/Other/Avenir/S3/13.jpg

But heading towards the sprint, they’re all back together again. With the peloton just over a minute behind them, they should be good. Remember, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/lpu.png Sajnok is currently two seconds behind the overall lead, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/trg.png Larsen three. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/vlv.png Schäppi could also enter the Top 10 with a few bonus seconds here.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/Other/Avenir/S3/14.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/phi.png Bokeloh on the other hand is only here for the stage win. So, he doesn’t wait for the sprint and instead attacks, putting pressure on the rest of the group.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/Other/Avenir/S3/15.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/mck.png Hoehn is distanced for good this time but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/phi.png Bokeloh is brought back. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/lpu.png Sajnok leads the remaining quartet towards the intermediate sprint line. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/trg.png Larsen has to make a move quickly, but he looks exhausted!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/Other/Avenir/S3/16.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/lpu.png Sajnok takes the sprint and the virtual GC lead with it! Only two riders can realistically take that away from him at the finish: pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/itd.png Hodeg with a third place or better, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fes.png Kalaba with a second place or a win.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/Other/Avenir/S3/17.jpg

Due to the high pace of the leading teams and a few speedbumps, the peloton is pretty stretched out. Sprinters need to be mindful of their positioning now already.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/Other/Avenir/S3/18.jpg

A few riders have been dropped from the peloton in the process. Among them is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/aeg.png Lonardi, one of the better sprinters.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/Other/Avenir/S3/19.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/Other/Avenir/S3/20.jpg

After a taxing stage, the breakaway is caught a bit earlier than yesterday. But it remains to be seen how much of a sprint prep the peloton is able to muster at this point. You can see pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/itd.png Hodeg in his yellow jersey very close to the front already, in fact only pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/vlv.png Halvorsen, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fes.png Kalaba and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fes.png Vila are left ahead of him.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/Other/Avenir/S3/21.jpg

In a surprising development, it’s now GC contender pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fes.png Roman who sets a brutal pace at the front, possibly trying to get a small gap with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fes.png Kalaba in his wheel! 6 kilometers to go.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/Other/Avenir/S3/22.jpg

To give you an idea of how messy the situation is: Apart from pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/itd.png Hodeg and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/vlv.png Halvorsen, the closest top sprinter is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cen.png Cullaigh in 20th-ish position next to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/azt.png Barta. A few riders like pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/bnz.png Mudgway, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/eue.png Jakobsen, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cad.png Moschetti and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/sct.png Rajovic are a bit further behind, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/duo.png Hsu is at the back of the peloton, completely out of contention!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/Other/Avenir/S3/23.jpg

With 4 kilometers to go, the pace at the front has slowed down a bit but there are still no cohesive sprint trains whatsoever. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/vlv.png Halvorsen is alone in the wind, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fes.png Kalaba and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/itd.png Hodeg follow him with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/eue.png Jakobsen making his way to the front behind them. Most of the top GC riders and a number of domestiques surround them, the only other notable sprinter is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cad.png Moschetti at the bottom right of the screen - pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cen.png Cullaigh has vanished.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/Other/Avenir/S3/24.jpg

As the sprint is about to begin, things have shifted around again significantly. Stage one winner pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/vlv.png Anderberg has taken the lead, the sprinters are now all lined up on the right side of the peloton. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/vlv.png Halvorsen is still the first in that line, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fes.png Kalaba, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cad.png Moschetti, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/eue.png Jakobsen and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/itd.png Hodeg follow with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/zal.png Ovsyannikov and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/bnz.png Mudgway now also closely behind. But there’s still no leadout. So, who’s going to start sprinting first?

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/Other/Avenir/S3/25.jpg

It’s pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/zal.png Ovsyannikov! With everyone looking at each other, trying to psych each other out, he just goes for it! And he’s a lot faster than everyone else right now.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/Other/Avenir/S3/26.jpg

The other sprinters mentioned above are now pursuit, it’s all between these seven men. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/zal.png Ovsyannikov is already slowing down a bit, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/bnz.png Mudgway is currently the fastest in this group, but it’s still anyone’s stage to take!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/Other/Avenir/S3/27.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cad.png Moschetti and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fes.png Kalaba are shoulder to shoulder, the only ones who could potentially still overtake pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/zal.png Ovsyannikov! And remember, Kalaba needs a second place to take the yellow jersey!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/Other/Avenir/S3/28.jpg

But he doesn’t get it! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/zal.png Ovsyannikov has the stamina to take the stage win, a fantastic performance, first outsmarting and then outpowering the nominally stronger sprinters. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cad.png Moschetti is second, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fes.png Kalaba third.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/Other/Avenir/S3/29.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/vlv.png Halvorsen finishes fourth ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/itd.png Hodeg, who has to give up yellow after just one day. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/bnz.png Mudgway takes sixth place in a photo finish ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/eue.png Jakobsen.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/Other/Avenir/S3/30.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ahe.png Padun and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/duo.png Gidich lead the rest of the peloton over the line, keeping themselves out of trouble and collecting a few points along the way.

The second sprint ends with another even more surprising winner. Plus, we see a lead change in the general classification: pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/lpu.png Sajnok has taken over the yellow jersey ahead of the first hilly day, which is coming up next.
