Stage 3
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/HC/Denmark/S3/P.jpg

After two flat days, we now have some hilly terrain to give another type of rider a chance to make an impression and also to give us a clearer picture for the GC ahead of the third flat stage tomorrow and the concluding time trial. In that regard, all eyes will be on the TT specialists, trying to limit their losses to the best puncheurs and distance each other.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cfe.png Coppel is the biggest name to watch; if he can capitalize on his good puncheur abilities, he could set himself up for the overall win today already. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/des.png Fraile is another rider who showed good form yesterday. As for the stage win, you can check back to the preview for a comprehensive list of puncheurs.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/itd.png Izagirre is the only one of the puncheurs with GC ambitions, not only because of his good time trialing, but also because many others on that list have lost at least a minute already yesterday. All that being said, let’s head into the race.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/HC/Denmark/S3/01.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/vlv.png Sosa initiates the first move of the day. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cad.png Naud, who took the polkadots almost by accident yesterday, looks like he intends to keep it and goes with him.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/HC/Denmark/S3/02.jpg

Three more riders bridge the gap: pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/phi.png Palini, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/duo.png Goh, and for the third time in as many days, it’s pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/lpu.png Waeytens on the move. Both he and Palini are among the best puncheurs and would have been considered pre-stage favorites, so this is a little weird.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/HC/Denmark/S3/03.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/HC/Denmark/S3/04.jpg

Another strong puncheur, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/isa.png Zakarin, joins after a longer chase. The peloton, a bit surprisingly, seems to be fine with this group. The pack has been very good at controlling breakaways so far, but this is a potent group.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/HC/Denmark/S3/05.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/isa.png Zakarin takes the first mountain sprint pretty easily, but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cad.png Naud is second and has 9 points to the Russian’s 6 now. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/duo.png Goh gets two points.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/HC/Denmark/S3/06.jpg

The peloton keeps them on a short leash, never letting them go more than three minutes. A number of teams are invested in the chase, and riders doing work include some of the sprint leaders like pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/kul.png Lavoine and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ubs.png Reinhardt as well as time trialists like pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/vvg.png Nepomnyachsniy and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ubs.png Fominykh, who would have had modest GC ambitions, had they not lost more than two minutes yesterday.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/HC/Denmark/S3/07.jpg

Surprisingly contested, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/phi.png Palini takes first place at the intermediate sprint ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/lpu.png Waeytens and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/isa.png Zakarin. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cad.png Naud, by the way, is the only rider in this group who’s within 20 seconds of the GC lead.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/HC/Denmark/S3/08.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/HC/Denmark/S3/09.jpg

Just ahead of the second mountain sprint, the pack has the escapees in sight. In a bid to get the KoM jersey, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/isa.png Zakarin attacks!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/HC/Denmark/S3/10.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/lpu.png Waeytens overtakes him, but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cad.png Naud does not score any points, so pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/isa.png Zakarin just barely passes him and takes that jersey! At the same time, the end of the escapees is near as the peloton already catches the first of them.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/HC/Denmark/S3/11.jpg

Coming over that small climb, the peloton is stretched very thing. As the final hills are coming closer, positioning becomes incredibly important. Riders like pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ubs.png Dillier, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/duo.png Cornu and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/and.png Mottin find themselves in the back half of the peloton; pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cfe.png Coppel, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/yor.png Durbridge and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/vvg.png Kittel are a bit further to the front. But a lot can still happen, more than 30 kilometers from the finish.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/HC/Denmark/S3/12.jpg

Iberia has been doing a lot of work once again and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/itd.png Izagirre is positioned exellently among the first 10 riders. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/min.png Claeys is right there with him

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/HC/Denmark/S3/13.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/HC/Denmark/S3/14.jpg

As we head into the final 20 kilometers, a group of 45 riders has gained a pretty significant advantage over the rest! Again led by Iberia, who impressively have all 8 of their riders in this group, the pace is pretty high. Major time trialists in this group include pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cfe.png Coppel, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/yor.png Durbridge, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/vvg.png Kittel, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/des.png Fraile, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ubs.png Dillier, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/duo.png Cornu, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/del.png Ignatiev, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/yor.png Tennant, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cdb.png Steensen and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/kul.png Mullen.

As for puncheurs, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/lpu.png Waeytens, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/vvg.png Gautier, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/duo.png Trofimov, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/phi.png Palini and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/yor.png Bellis are there, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/min.png Claeys somehow messed up and fell behind alongside the likes of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/and.png Dowsett, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/and.png Barrio and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cfe.png Quevedo. There’s still time to get back to the front, but it’s not a great sign at this point.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/HC/Denmark/S3/15.jpg

A quick look at what the riders are going to go through in the next kilometers reveals a circuit with two steep but short climbs that are to be conquered three times each.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/HC/Denmark/S3/16.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/HC/Denmark/S3/17.jpg

The second time the riders are at the first of the two climbs, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/vvg.png Gautier attacks! The first serious move, and of course it’s Iberia leading the chase. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/yor.png Bellis has pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/yor.png Durbridge in great position behind him on the left.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/HC/Denmark/S3/18.jpg

Over the second climb, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/itd.png Izagirre takes matters into his own hands and goes after pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/vvg.png Gautier!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/HC/Denmark/S3/19.jpg

But a massive effort by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/yor.png Bellis brings both of them back.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/HC/Denmark/S3/20.jpg

Heading into the final two climbs, we have two groups of 30 riders each. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/xr0.png Houle currently leads the first, where most top time trialists still are present. Biggest names not here are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/and.png Mottin, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/vlv.png Campenaerts and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/eur.png Sterobo in addition to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/yor.png Viennet, who has fallen much further behind and already lost time yesterday.

With the exception of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/phi.png Palini, the puncheurs I mentioned above are also still here, eyeing the stage win. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cfe.png Duchesne and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/itd.png Gougeard should also be mentioned and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cfe.png Quevedo made it back.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/HC/Denmark/S3/21.jpg

Over the top of the penultimate ascent, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/vvg.png Gautier and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/itd.png Izagirre go again! Xero is leading the group now with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/xr0.png Houle, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/xr0.png Bazhkou and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/xr0.png Debesay on the left.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/HC/Denmark/S3/22.jpg

The road to the finish is very steep, but also very short! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/vvg.png Gautier still has a gap to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/itd.png Izagirre and the Xero riders with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/duo.png Trofimov and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/yor.png Bellis chasing behind them. In the middle of the road, that’s pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cfe.png Coppel, living up to expectations with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cfe.png Quevedo to his right and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/del.png Ignatiev close by as well!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/HC/Denmark/S3/23.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/vvg.png Gautier’s advance is big enough! He raises his arms in celebration!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/HC/Denmark/S3/24.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/itd.png Izagirre leads pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/xr0.png Houle over the line 9 seconds later to finish second. A good result, but he probably wanted to gain more time on some of the better time trialists. Because pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/vvg.png Gautier had lost time yesterday though, he gets to wear the yellow jersey for at least one, most likely two days!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/HC/Denmark/S3/25.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/duo.png Trofimov finishes sixth behind pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/xr0.png Debesay and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/xr0.png Bazhkou. What a great team effort by Xero, and Bazhkou is in position to get a good GC result now as well! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/yor.png Bellis comes in seventh, then pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cfe.png Quevedo.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/HC/Denmark/S3/26.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cfe.png Coppel and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/del.png Ignatiev complete the Top 10, two of the big favorites for the time trial and the overall. But not the only ones, as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/duo.png Cornu finishes directly behind them ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/kul.png Mullen, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/min.png Janse van Rensburg and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/yor.png Durbridge, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/des.png Fraile and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/yor.png Tennant not far behind with the same time as well.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/HC/Denmark/S3/27.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/vvg.png Kittel really struggled on that steep slope and he finishes in the second big group, 59 seconds behind the other time trialists. With him are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ubs.png Dillier, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/duo.png Dempster, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/eur.png Sterobo and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/kul.png Martin.

After everything is said and done, we have only 13 riders within 12 seconds of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/itd.png Izagirre. 9 of those are great time trialists who should fight for the GC victory and the podium places, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cfe.png Coppel and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/yor.png Durbridge arguably the big favorites now. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/xr0.png Bazhkou is just on the cusp in terms of time trialing ability, he’s probably going to be the one fending off the likes of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/vvg.png Kittel and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ubs.png Dillier as they try to move up into the Top 10.
