The best sprinters participating in the British Championship are Swift, L. Rowe and Harrison, but none have a team to build a train, resorting to hiring some amateurs to ride in their colors. cycleYorkshire has the biggest squad but M. Rowe is not the best finisher, perhaps Thwaites is a better option. Curious how this will play out.
A few local riders went in the break but it was doomed to fail anyway.
Faiers goes for a late attack with ten kilometer to go. The hired riders of Aker and ISA chasing.
Eventually Stannard took to the front and brought him back. A new attempt is formed by Thomas, Horton, A. Yates and Bellis at seven kilometers from the line.
Going into the final kilometer and they still lead by twenty seconds. The hired riders are not capable enough to bring this strong breakaway back. Horton opens the sprint but everyone is awake. Swift needs an almighty acceleration to pass them.
250 meters to go, Thomas leading every so slightly over Bellis. Horton has spent too much in the wind and Yates doesn't have the speed. The peloton will not catch them, one of these four will win!
Jonathan Bellis is the new British champion! He fell just short to Froome on the hilly route last year but gets his redemption by surprising the sprinters! Thomas second, Horton third as best amateur, Adam best of the Yates in fourth. Swift wins the peloton sprint for fifth ahead of Harrison, but both men will be angry at their hired helpers for not catching the late attack. S. Yates, L. Rowe, Edmondson and M. Rowe complete the top ten.
cycleYorkshire is favorite to take a second British title with either Stannard or Tennant.
Tennant is the first of the two to start. In typical British weather he finishes in one hour, five minutes and nine seconds.
Another cycleYorkshire rider, Kennaugh, goes to provisional second, though 2'25 down.
Tanfield third at three minutes, the weather having improved a bit.
Faiers proceeds to take third, but +2'34 is a long distance from Tennant.
Christian could spoil the cycleYorkshire party but he already lost 47 seconds on the first section. He does prevent a full podium sweep by beating Kennaugh by nearly a minute, but 1'28 behind Tennant.
Stannard is the last rider to start but he has to look at Christian instead of Tennant, as he is 36 seconds down after one third. He ends up just inside a minute, 58 seconds, and takes second place.
But the winner by a comfortable margin is Andrew Tennant.
