Tour du Maroc
The PTHC Tour du Maroc is the final PTHC race of the year. The 9 stage tour is in its second season. The race remains unchanged with a balanced parcours including 5 flat stages, 2 for the punchy riders and 2 for the climbers. The queen stage is stage 6 with its climb to Tirboula at just over 2,000 meters. But stage 3 with its 3 category one climb will likely also be key.
Last year Romain Sicard won S3 on his way to the GC victory. Dombrowski and Hirt completed the podium while Ciolek won S5 and the points jersey.
Sicard and Air France aren’t here to defend the title but Dombrowski and Hirt are both back among 9 80+ Mountain riders
Rider | MT | HI | RS | RC | Dombrowski | 84 | 75 | 78 | 78 | Amador | 83 | 74 | 73 | 77 | Kudus | 82 | 76 | 77 | 79 | Martin | 81 | 76 | 77 | 76 | Wellens | 81 | 75 | 80 | 76 | Monsalve | 81 | 76 | 80 | 77 | Hirt | 81 | 74 | 79 | 79 | Meintjes | 80 | 77 | 76 | 78 | Ji | 80 | 75 | 69 | 73 |
With his 84 mountain and very solid back up stats Dombrowski has to be the favorite for the top step on the podium. The remaining 8 are all fairly evenly matched so the podium fight could be wide open. Kudus won white here last year so we know he likes this race. Ji seems to be a step below the rest with much weaker secondary stats.
There are also 6 riders with 79 mountain, among these Yates and Talansky have the strong secondary stats to threaten our favorites. Yates gives Farfetch a strong 1-2 punch in conjunction with Monsalve.
There are two punchy stages and all the favorites seem to be strong enough in this category to defend themselves and the top puncheurs that could cause them difficulty are not at this raise. The strongest pure puncheur is Boswell who rides for Dombrowski’s eBuddy squad. Dombrowski can also count on two other strong climbers in Aru and Majka. The support doesn’t set eBuddy apart though, nearly everyone of our favorites brings a strong cadre of 75+ climbers to support them. Only Meintjes looks more isolated. All these strong climbing teams means we might see some big breaks later in the race.
Other than the climbers for the GC the other big focus is with the sprinters. Given the 5 flat stages the race features what is a very small sprint field by man game standards There are only 8 80+ sprinters and none over 81. Even going to 78+ we only have 11 riders:
Rider | FL | SP | AC | RS | RC | Goss | 73 | 81 | 77 | 70 | 79 | Kragh Andersen | 77 | 80 | 77 | 74 | 78 | Rowe | 72 | 80 | 70 | 58 | 79 | Lavoine | 73 | 80 | 78 | 64 | 77 | Drapac | 71 | 80 | 79 | 65 | 76 | Nizzolo | 73 | 80 | 79 | 67 | 71 | Samolenkov | 74 | 80 | 79 | 71 | 78 | Van der Sande | 75 | 79 | 79 | 73 | 76 | Thwaites | 73 | 78 | 76 | 70 | 76 | Contreras | 72 | 78 | 80 | 75 | 77 | Santos | 76 | 78 | 78 | 72 | 76 |
Goss has the best top speed but Kragh Andersen and Samolenkov have better secondary stats. None of these riders stands out so look for messy sprints.
To further mix things up many of these sprinters have limited or no support. The strongest lead out possibilities are those with two on our favorites list: Rowe and Thwaites for CycleYorkshire and Contreras and Santos for ISA-Hexacta. Since both pairs are evenly matched it will be interesting to see if they work together or sprint independently. Since Contreras isn't one of the top guys ISA-Hexacta may not even get a sprint train.
Finally none of the sprinters are all that strong in the mountains, so maybe some of them won’t make it to the 5th sprint stage on the last day of the race. It seems likely that stage or stage 7 with its extensive early climbing might go to a breakaway.

With no ambitions in terms of GC, I expect to see my riders in break every stage.
Thanks for the preview!

Big race for us considering this will be our last big chance of getting a nice haul of points I'd think this season. The competition is stronger than I would have liked but Meintjes is the best puncheurs of the favourites so I hope he will use it to his advantage.
A top 5 GC would do nicely and an obligatory Matt Rowe stage win as well!!!

Cio called our lineup in Portugal a throwaway lineup, but this is a proper throwaway lineup. Just hoping for some points really.

Very glad I picked Grmay and Bennett this way round here and Portugal - but I still am pissed off at how good this startlist is, our man may have to go for breaks if he has any hope of a top 10.

We need to put two riders in the top 10 and Van der Sande (with his 65 MO to help him survive) to have a crack at the points jersey to make this race a success. I've already accepted that Monsalve will find a way to screw that plan up, but Yates normally saves us when we need him to |

Formolo will try to finish in GC top 10 and I'm curious what Sosnitskiy and Vervaeke can do. Hope we'll join breaks because Formolo isn't one of the main favorites.

Well, here we are. 9 PTHC race days where we are obviously underpowered, but need points.
We got a really great draw here in the sprints on paper. Five open sprint stages where we have a favorite and big points up for grabs. This is really going to be a race of reckoning for AKA. If he can perform here, we may stay afloat and have something to build on next year, with him as a key player. If he fails as usual, we are going down, and his future is very uncertain. It's up to him, and the random PCM sprint engine.
We do have Garby here GC wise, who may have a chance at a top 15-top 20 if things go right. But he could also easily finish 50th considering his performances this year. Hope he's attentive and aggressive.
These are not the two leaders I would have wanted to have here with my season and team on the line, but it's what it is. Nothing else to say except that I hope we succeed.
Great preview Ulrich!

The first stage was definitely not as bad as it could have been. I'll definitely take the podium here. Hopefully a good sign for future stages.

Great ride by Peng! Every point here is bonus, so good to see him in the attack picking up some seconds.

Brave effort of my young guns, I like it very much! Once he fully develops, Barthe might become very interesting riders.
More Iberia riders in the breaks, please!

Given his positioning I had hoped Drapac would do better than eighth, but at least we won't leave this race pointless

probably my most anticipated race of the season, I hope Wellens can secure a Top 5 here and will show whats to come next season. Overall happy with the opponents we'll face, even though nothing is certain with this game. Lets go!

Given that September was quite a let down (particualrly ToA performance), unclear exactly how the PCT promotion race looks now as ISA - Hexacta will have caught up on RD's without too much point production, hence hitting the overall ppRD picture quite hard. Maroc the longest race remaining. Boilly had a good showing here last season, winning a stage and solidly in the top 10 on GC, but perhaps the way that racing has evolved this season Ji might be our better hope this time around?
Stage 1 delivers an awesome performance from our emerging sprinter Contreras, delivering his 2nd stage win of the season . Stage 1 brings the extra value of the additional jerseys, but of course can't expect this too last at all with the difficult terrain upcoming.
Thanks to UU the preview/report.

Very happy with how Grmay and Areruya looked attentive and racing ambitiously near the front like they are actual favourites
