Ras Tailteann stage 2
Tamijo
Ras Taiteann

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C1/RasT/S2/000.jpg

Today another flat sprinter stage, as a contrast to yesterday very short and with only one intermediate sprint. Forecasts say another cloudy day with some showers, temperatures around 11°C and wind up to 5-7 km/h mostly from the rear but the last 15 km with crosswinds.

The Race

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/min.png Marcos opens the stage in front of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/duo.png Oliveira and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cbx.png Schinnagel

Also pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/bnz.png Reddish and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/yor.png Williams on the move, but the get caught quite fast.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C1/RasT/S2/01.jpg

The pace it quite hot but never the less we get an attack from pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/eue.png Conci and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/gla.png Downey, the gap is still less than a minute although we are passed the first 20 km.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/eue.png Conci crack but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/gla.png Downey make contact with the leading trio.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C1/RasT/S2/02.jpg

More than 1/3 of the stage done by now, the peloton have slowed some and the distance now a little more than 2 minutes. From the pack pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/gla.png Connolly has attacked and after some 12 km alone he is now joining the breakaway.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C1/RasT/S2/03.jpg

We got periods of crosswind, haven’t had any splits so far, but we see than many team leaders sitting close to the front, clear signs of nervousness.

The breakaway get to the days only intermediate sprint with 2’23, a sign that the pack is still quite fast. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/gla.png Connolly takes it in front of teammate pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/gla.png Downey.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C1/RasT/S2/04.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/duo.png Oliveira lost time at the sprint, at the same time the pack has now upped the pace further. It is over for him and soon the peloton is under one minute back, with more than 60 km left.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C1/RasT/S2/05.jpg

Still more than 55 km left and the peloton now at 53”, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/gla.png Connolly go solo.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C1/RasT/S2/06.jpg

With wind from the rear the escapees should have it a little easier, but the pack is very fast, about 40 km left and the three riders in pursuit were reeled in by the pack.

35 km left pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/gla.png Connolly has 27”, then a new attack from the pack it is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cbx.png Quintero, and not long after another two riders close the gap to the leading riders pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/bia.png Lauk and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/bnz.png Reddish and just a few km later pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/eue.png Al Murawwi and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/yor.png Williams also attacks.
But with about 20 km left the pack hits the crosswind section, and the nervous pack steeps further on the gas very one trying to get to the front. The breakaway is soon over but in the meantime we have also got a small split.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C1/RasT/S2/07.jpg

Iberia - Team Degenkolb attempt to take full advantage of the split created in the effort to close down the constant attacks, over the next approx.10 km they pull very hard with high tempo riders pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/itd.png Jans and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/itd.png Gallego Martin

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C1/RasT/S2/08.jpg

We got 37 riders in the first group with a distance of 31” to A1 (147 riders)

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C1/RasT/S2/09.jpg

The riders in the 2nd peloton do work very hard to get back, and a sharp right turn with a bit more than 5 km left create contact between the two groups, now only left to see if the sprinters from the 2nd group can reach the front in time.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C1/RasT/S2/10.jpg

3 km left and we can expect the sprint to open soon, this is the approx. order in the first group: pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/emo.png Martinez, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/vlv.png Stenersen, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/itd.png King, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/itd.png Merino Criado, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/emo.png Lovassy, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/vlv.png Sweeck, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/vlv.png Ahlstrand, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/des.png Zabel, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/itd.png Degenkolb, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/duo.png Avelino, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/sct.png Ciolek, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/bgc.png Kupfernagel, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/gcn.png Mohs, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cad.png Petilli, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/phi.png Saber, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/kmm.png Cavendish, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cad.png Boeckmans, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/mck.png Holloway, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/del.png Bonnin, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/itd.png Jans, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/yor.png Enger, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/esc.png Thorsen, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/min.png Vantomme, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cfe.png Vanderbiest, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/del.png Guarnieri

The rider alone to the right is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/vlv.png Markus

A double right turn coming up within the next 1.5 km definitely going to be crucial this late on the stage.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C1/RasT/S2/11.jpg

As anticipated the sharp curves was enough to split in “leading” group, after the first curve we saw a pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/vlv.png Markus delivering a last effort for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/vlv.png Ahlstrand leading the longest train (back to all those later), at the left of them a very fast pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/itd.png Merino Criado leading pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/itd.png Degenkolb forward.
A 3rd train with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/emo.png Lovassy pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/emo.png Martinez and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/emo.png Maksimov forming further left taking the long route into the upcoming 2nd corner.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C1/RasT/S2/12.jpg

1.5 km left, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/itd.png Merino Criado with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/itd.png Degenkolb first into the curve.

Behind them pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/vlv.png Ahlstrand now have to pass pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/vlv.png Markus not to lose too much to the fast Iberia riders.

At the wheel of Ahlstrand pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/duo.png Avelino, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/gcn.png Mohs, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/des.png Zabel, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/sct.png Ciolek, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/bgc.png Kupfernagel, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/mck.png Holloway and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/esc.png Thorsen

At the left of this train still pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/emo.png Lovassy, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/emo.png Martinez and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/emo.png Maksimov in their own train.

Not connected to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/esc.png Thorsen, but not too far back pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cfe.png Vanderbiest, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/phi.png Saber and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/kmm.png Cavendish.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C1/RasT/S2/13.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/itd.png Merino Criado swings off and it is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/itd.png Degenkolb first under the red kite. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/emo.png Lovassy in 2nd position, but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/vlv.png Ahlstrand maybe better placed in his slipstream than pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/emo.png Maksimov

Behind those a substantial gap to a line with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/duo.png Avelino, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/gcn.png Mohs, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/des.png Zabel and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/sct.png Ciolek, at the right side of this group pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/itd.png Merino Criado.
Not far behind those pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/bgc.png Kupfernagel, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/mck.png Holloway and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/esc.png Thorsen at his left pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/vlv.png Markus.

Then another substantial gap down to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cfe.png Vanderbiest, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/phi.png Saber, then pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/emo.png Martinez, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/kmm.png Cavendish and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cad.png Boeckmans, at least the last three seemingly too far back to get a result today.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C1/RasT/S2/14.jpg

600 meters, seems like Iberia started this too early

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C1/RasT/S2/15.jpg

200 meters
At first pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/emo.png Maksimov looking best, but now pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/sct.png Ciolek comes very fast at the right side.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C1/RasT/S2/16.jpg

100 meters

What a kick!, from out of nowhere pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/mck.png Holloway now side by side with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/sct.png Ciolek
