Again we start and finish in Calella, today heading south along the coast to Mataró, before we head inland for a series of climbs in the Catalan Mediterranean Mountain System, hardest the double cat.1 in the Montseny Massif, before we head back to where we started.
A lot of climbing km today but the profile is tricky, a very easy finish with a lot of downhill km to catch up if the pack split. This will most likely prevent any serious attacks from the GC top favorites, and we must expect to see either a puncher attack on the final cat.3 or a reduced sprint between a mix of those having anything left after what is clearly not an easy profile. The most interesting question is if anyone important may loss enough time today to make the stage interesting GC wise.
Expected to be mostly sunny with temperatures around 17°C and still very little wind.
It is hard to call this race as it may be a puncher with some acceleration stamina and resistance or a hilly sprinter with those same physic advantages.

Suryadi opens the stage Riabushenko at wheel.
Tanovitchii with Putti at wheel soon to follow and behind them also Balloni, Misbah and Haavardsholm have opened a gap to the pack
Rakuten with Salcone the only team seemingly interested in closing the seven riders down, and when Salcone was no longer able to keep up the pace, the distance grew rapidly.
Quite interesting breakaway we got here, with Haavardsholm and Tanovitchii amongst the better punchers in the race, and especially Tanovitchii also a fine rouleur, who might be very dangerous if allowed to much head start on the last climb.
They pass the first KoM with 3’21”, Suryadi in front of Haavardsholm and Tanovitchii
The gap maxed out between the KoM and the bonus sprint 4’40. Haavardsholm wins the sprint in front of Suryadi.
The break get to the cat.2 climb “Alt dels Pinars de Badó” 7.4 km at 4.9% with a lead of 3’36” Suryadi attacks from 2.5 km, Balloni counter but can’t close the gap, Suryadi takes the KoM in front of Balloni and Misbah
The pack loses some time on the climb distance now 4’04”, but on the flat leading up the coming cat.3 it is quickly reduced to 2’30, Again Suryadi attacks, this time from 1 km, from about 700 meters Haavardsholm counters, and takes the KoM in last second with just inches.
The breakaway got 2’47 over the top, Swisslion Cycling Team does their best to keep the break under control, clearly frustrated that they did not get a rider into the breakaway, also cycleYorkshire and Rakuten taking part in the pursuit but not as relentless as Swisslion.
The breakaway starts the double cat.1 with 2’53, the first part “Alt El Muntanyá” just 2.6 km but with an average slope of 8.5%, Putti opens but does not get rid of Haavardsholm and when the latter kick in with his superior acceleration, Putti is no match for him.
The breakaway reunite on the false flat between the two climbs, they start the 6.5 km climb up to “Coll Formic” with a gap of 2’55, the climb is quite constant with about 5.4%.
Haavardsholm opens from the distance, for the first time we see Tanovitchii react and seriously take part in the KoM, anyway it was too late and Haavardsholm takes another cat.1.

The duo Haavardsholm / Tanovitchii had 2’19 over the top, and it seems clear that this time they are not waiting for the other breakaway riders. The peloton fast on the downhill now mainly led by Rakuten Pro Cycling with some help from Mestric we see a few splits at some point involving race leader Castaneda but when the reach the flat the pact is almost united with no important riders dropped.
The duo starts the final cat.3 climb alone in front of the pack; they got 51” with 23 km to the finish line. Haavardsholm explode within the last km of the KoM, Tanovitchii passes the top alone with 33”, 20 km to the finish.
Rolland, Koren and Higuita doing what they can to close it down, but with 6 km left Tanovitchii who played this breakaway very well has 53”, under the 5km banner another attempt from Lindau
With 2 km left for Tanovitchii, Lindau at 19” and the pack another 19” further back.
In the pack it is Silva for Kuboki and behind him Koren for Bellis
Tanovitchii first under the red kite 10” down to Lindau another 15” to the pack
While Tanovitchii has just 100 meters left and the stage win is secured, Lindau got 12” to the pack.
In the pack it is a chaotic sprint, typical when the stage win is already gone. Bellis in front without any teammates left, a bit further back Silva still with Kuboki, otherwise none of the sprinters have made it to the front it is riders like Duchesne, Grmay, Venter, Pantano Gomez, Kozhatayev, Ivanov at the front.
Tanovitchii wins the stage and also takes over the race lead.
With a great late attack Lindau 2nd.
Bellis 3rd, Kuboki 4th
Duchesne 5th and
Grmay 6th
Higuita 7th and Meintjes 8th
Barrio 9th and Kozhatayev rounds of top 10
