Vuelta a Espana
Stage 3: Ibi - Alicante 186 km
Welcome to the third stage of the Vuelta, we are in Ibi, an inland town in the province of Alicante. The route of slightly undulated and two hill will contain todays KoM climbs, Puerto de Biar and Puerto de Tibi, but this should be a rather easy chase for the sprinter teams, expected to fight for the sage win in Alicante.
It is 27°C, partly clouded with no wind at the start line, we expect a little more wind later but very few periods above 2-3 km/h.
van den Berg opens as soon as the flag drop, Weinstein as well as Owen in his slipstream, a few meters back Vink
A little later van der Hoorn, Sanogo and Lawless attacks and get a nice gap fast.
But especially Darbinyan dedicated to bring it back and with a little help from
Tolhoek, this last attempt was closed down.
We get two solo attempts, before the pack settles down, first Lilovski and later Burghardt, but they are hunted down quickly.
After some 40 km the original breakaway has 4’08” to the pack and we can safely assume that the four riders will the todays breakaway. The best placed rider is Weinstein 4’28 behind in the GC, and as the riders in the breakaway has neither KoM nor Points, they are only a threat to the stage win.
In the pack we see Aasvold, Minguez Ayala, Tolhoek, Gonzalez Salas, Darbinyan and Rybalkin working
The breakaway gets to the intermediate sprint with 3’42”, 112 km left. They don’t care and just pass with 39 km/h.
Bol, Darbinyan and Tolhoek doing a lot of work in the pack between the sprint and the first KoM, lately though also Lammertink taking long and frequent turns.
The break reaches the foot of Puerto de Biar with 2’41”
Vink opens from 1.3 km, a powerfull acceleration but in the last second he is overtaken by both Owen taking the 6 points and Weinstein with 4.
Lammertink leads the pack at the hill.
Tolhoek, Lammertink, Bol, Kuznetsov, Darbinyan and Rathe leading the pack between the two climbs, cutting the distance to 1’40”
Vermeltfoort leading the peloton on the hill.
Again Vink opens the KoM sprint, but this time starting later, accelerating with 600 m to the top.
Never the less he was again beaten at last second by Owen gathering 12 points today.
24 km to the finish line, we are at the last uncategorized uphill about half way down from the KoM at Puerto de Tibi. The pack is at 1’24
Just as we pass under the 20 km banner a very early attack from Owen.
Pack at 1’11”
Owen keep up a gap of about 10” on the remaining part of the downhill, but as they reach the final flat sector leading to the finish, he was caught by the trio.
Pack at 1’24”
It as now Per setting the pace in the pack and he quickly cut the gap to 34”, 5 km left for the breakaway.
We got just two km left and the breakaway is still not caught, but with just 16” the sprinter teams now setting up their trains.
Leading in the middle:
Gerts, Grosu, Stepniak, Kemboi, Krasnov and Bertilsson
At the left:
Kuznetsov, Kalaba, Kump, Liepins and Nizzolo
At the right:
Rathe, Hsu and Guerao
1.6 km left
Although Weinstein is still 5-6 meters in front of the breakaway it is over, he is at 46 km/h and the trains coming with 61 km/h, same goes his three breakaway companions who has moved left.
Kuznetsov with Kalaba and Kump at the left.
Rathe with Hsu and Guerao at the right.
While the train led by Gerts have disintegrated and fallen back.
Conti and Liepins side by side, behind them Grosu and Nizzolo
Weber moved forward now at Nizzolo’s wheel. Seeming over for Gerts down to 45 km/h,
Stepniak, Kemboi, Warchol, Krasnov, Taaramäe, Bertilsson and Gillett at the rear of this sprinter group, everyone else in a group distanced with another 10-15 meters
Kuznetsov and Rathe finished their jobs, and swung off.
Hsu with Guerao (67 km/h) now with a clear lead some 3-4 meters in front of Kalaba with Kump (64 km/h)
Behind Kump a train led by Grosu (61 km/h), Liepins, Stepniak,
Kemboi at the end of this train seems to be overtaking Stepniak accelerating to 63 km/h.
A fast Nizzolo (65/h) at the left rear of Liepins leading his own line with Weber (62 km/h) and Krasnov (63 km/h)
The order under the red kit is:
Hsu65 km/h Guerao67 km/h Kalaba68 km/h Kump69 km/h Grosu70 km/h Liepins70 km/h Nizzolo70 km/h Stepniak70 km/h Kemboi70 km/h Weber62 km/h Kuznetsov35 km/h Krasnov55 km/h
