Vuelta a Espana

Stage 3: Ibi - Alicante 186 km

Welcome to the third stage of the Vuelta, we are in Ibi, an inland town in the province of Alicante. The route of slightly undulated and two hill will contain todays KoM climbs, Puerto de Biar and Puerto de Tibi, but this should be a rather easy chase for the sprinter teams, expected to fight for the sage win in Alicante.

It is 27°C, partly clouded with no wind at the start line, we expect a little more wind later but very few periods above 2-3 km/h.

The Race

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fpc.png van den Berg opens as soon as the flag drop, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/pum.png Weinstein as well as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/t3a.png Owen in his slipstream, a few meters back pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/grm.png Vink

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/GTM/Vuelta/S3/01.jpg

A little later pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/aeg.png van der Hoorn, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/tmo.png Sanogo and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/t3a.png Lawless attacks and get a nice gap fast.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/GTM/Vuelta/S3/02.jpg

But especially pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ssc.png Darbinyan dedicated to bring it back and with a little help from

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ebd.png Tolhoek, this last attempt was closed down.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/GTM/Vuelta/S3/03.jpg

We get two solo attempts, before the pack settles down, first pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/t3a.png Lilovski and later pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/tmo.png Burghardt, but they are hunted down quickly.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/GTM/Vuelta/S3/04.jpg

After some 40 km the original breakaway has 4’08” to the pack and we can safely assume that the four riders will the todays breakaway. The best placed rider is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/pum.png Weinstein 4’28 behind in the GC, and as the riders in the breakaway has neither KoM nor Points, they are only a threat to the stage win.

In the pack we see pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/akm.png Aasvold, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/des.png Minguez Ayala, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ebd.png Tolhoek, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/rpn.png Gonzalez Salas, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ssc.png Darbinyan and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/tti.png Rybalkin working

The breakaway gets to the intermediate sprint with 3’42”, 112 km left. They don’t care and just pass with 39 km/h.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/iso.png Bol, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ssc.png Darbinyan and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ebd.png Tolhoek doing a lot of work in the pack between the sprint and the first KoM, lately though also pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ebd.png Lammertink taking long and frequent turns.

The break reaches the foot of Puerto de Biar with 2’41”

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/GTM/Vuelta/S3/06.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/grm.png Vink opens from 1.3 km, a powerfull acceleration but in the last second he is overtaken by both pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/t3a.png Owen taking the 6 points and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/pum.png Weinstein with 4.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/GTM/Vuelta/S3/07.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ebd.png Lammertink leads the pack at the hill.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ebd.png Vermeltfoort leading the peloton on the hill.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/GTM/Vuelta/S3/09.jpg

Again pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/grm.png Vink opens the KoM sprint, but this time starting later, accelerating with 600 m to the top.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/GTM/Vuelta/S3/10.jpg

Never the less he was again beaten at last second by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/t3a.png Owen gathering 12 points today.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/GTM/Vuelta/S3/11.jpg

24 km to the finish line, we are at the last uncategorized uphill about half way down from the KoM at Puerto de Tibi. The pack is at 1’24

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/GTM/Vuelta/S3/12.jpg

Just as we pass under the 20 km banner a very early attack from pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/t3a.png Owen.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/GTM/Vuelta/S3/13.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/t3a.png Owen keep up a gap of about 10” on the remaining part of the downhill, but as they reach the final flat sector leading to the finish, he was caught by the trio.
Pack at 1’24”

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/GTM/Vuelta/S3/14.jpg

It as now pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/iso.png Per setting the pace in the pack and he quickly cut the gap to 34”, 5 km left for the breakaway.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/GTM/Vuelta/S3/15.jpg

We got just two km left and the breakaway is still not caught, but with just 16” the sprinter teams now setting up their trains.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/GTM/Vuelta/S3/16.jpg

1.6 km left
Although pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/pum.png Weinstein is still 5-6 meters in front of the breakaway it is over, he is at 46 km/h and the trains coming with 61 km/h, same goes his three breakaway companions who has moved left.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/iso.png Kuznetsov with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/iso.png Kalaba and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/iso.png Kump at the left.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/iso.png Kuznetsov and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ssc.png Rathe finished their jobs, and swung off.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ssc.png Hsu with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ssc.png Guerao (67 km/h) now with a clear lead some 3-4 meters in front of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/iso.png Kalaba with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/iso.png Kump (64 km/h)

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fpc.png Kemboi at the end of this train seems to be overtaking Stepniak accelerating to 63 km/h.

A fast pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/rpn.png Nizzolo (65/h) at the left rear of Liepins leading his own line with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fes.png Weber (62 km/h) and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ino.png Krasnov (63 km/h)
