Welcome to Sri Lanka for the Colombo Classic! Hagen comes here seeking a third consecutive win in this race, having won the previous two editions, while Siriwardena and Silva are here for their home race and hoping to bring the home fans some cheer.
It takes less than 10km for a 6 rider break to form - Aregger (who for some reason is wearing the NC jersey of Trinidad and Tobago due to a kit issue, apologies!), Asgreen, Lilovski, Spanopoulos, Anderberg and Hofstetter.
We now fast forward to 22km to go, the next time anything of note happens - Lilovski attacks as the peloton (still contains 180 riders) closes to within a minute of the break.
However, the pace being raised in the pack creates a split. Juul-Jensen, Pichon, Froome, Klemme and Arndt amongst those dropped from the now 49 rider peloton.
All but Froome make it back by the 15km to go mark, with Aregger now in front, 33 seconds ahead of the rest of the break and 1’16 ahead of the peloton.
With 8km to go he’s caught by the rest of the break, and by the now 115 rider peloton.
That’s the signal for the attacks from the favourites to start, and Hagen quickly opens a 15 second gap, with Reimer leading the chase.
He leads down the descent, but is caught with 3.5km to go. 23 riders remain in the front group, but another 47 are within 30 seconds - Dowsett, Klemme and Yates the biggest names in the second group.
Indeed, we have 70 riders together under the Flamme Rouge. Hagen, Ponzi, De Bie, Claeys, Lutsenko, Gastauer, Kinoshita and Koretzky are all well placed, as are Benoot, Kaczmarek and Reimer.
We take the final corner with 500m to go and sprint opens, with Lutsenko leading Hagen and Gastauer.
Gastauer quickly fades, so it looks like Lutsenko versus Hagen - but Reimer and Kinoshita are coming fast!
It’s a near dead heat on the line, but Hagen wins his third consecutive Colombo Classic! A heartbreaking second for Lutsenko, while Reimer and Kinoshita will be wondering what would have happened if the line was 100m later as they take 3rd and 4th, with Gastauer making it two Vesuvio riders in the top 5.
Like Noah’s Ark they come in two-by-two after that - Ponzi and Kaczmarek are 6th and 7th (and Benoot 11th), with De Bie and Van der Poel 8th and 9th (and Eiking 12th), while Koretzky rounds out the top 10. Claeys can only take 13th ahead of Boswell, Demare and Borges.
