Veenendaal - Veenendaal Preview
The ninth running of this race and the second in it's current avatar - called Veenendaal - Veenendaal, changed from the erstwhile Dutch Food Valley Classic. The course is an undulating profile, officially categorized as flat, but it provides a lot of opportunities to non-sprinters to have a go at winning the race with a mid to late stage attack.
The last three winners of this race, Hermans, Cavendish and Lo Cicero, are all on the startlist and hoping to become the first to win this race twice. In case of Hermans, it could be a case of winning it back-to-back.
| FLA | HIL | STA | RES | SPR | ACC | Ahlstrand | 74 | 67 | 74 | 73 | 83 | 82 | Guarnieri | 76 | 66 | 77 | 76 | 82 | 81 | Zabel | 74 | 69 | 74 | 70 | 81 | 79 | Gaviria | 74 | 71 | 72 | 75 | 79 | 82 | Lo Cicero | 72 | 64 | 71 | 63 | 84 | 78 | Rowe | 78 | 66 | 76 | 70 | 79 | 80 | Ciolek | 74 | 65 | 72 | 68 | 82 | 78 | Tsatevich | 74 | 77 | 74 | 73 | 75 | 75 | Bar | 77 | 70 | 75 | 72 | 77 | 76 | Vanderbiest | 74 | 64 | 74 | 69 | 82 | 77 | Kragh Andersen | 77 | 64 | 70 | 74 | 80 | 77 | Aregger | 73 | 71 | 72 | 71 | 78 | 77 | Roelandts | 73 | 69 | 72 | 71 | 79 | 77 | Avelino | 71 | 64 | 70 | 66 | 83 | 78 | Cavendish | 72 | 64 | 73 | 70 | 82 | 80 | Redecker | 73 | 72 | 74 | 67 | 77 | 78 | Bonifazio | 77 | 65 | 67 | 73 | 78 | 78 | Kupfernagel | 74 | 64 | 73 | 66 | 80 | 80 | Page | 75 | 66 | 72 | 72 | 78 | 79 |
To start off, it must be mentioned that this is usually a very open race and hence, a very difficult one to call.
Ahlstrand starts as the top competitor on the startlist, with his good combination of sprint and flat stats. His hill climbing abilities are average at best, meaning he'll be hoping that the slopes are not ridden at pace.
Guarnieri is slightly slower than Ahlstrand at full stride, but is better on the flat stuff and in energy stats. He is similarly skilled on the small slopes.
Zabel gives up a bit in top speed and gains a bit on the slopes, which ideally makes him a podium competitor and not quite a race-win competitor.
Perhaps one of the riders best suited for this race is Gaviria, who has the best hill abilities among the top sprinters.
Former winner Lo Cicero gives up a little on the flats and the hills but his top speed still makes him a top contender for any flat race.
Like Gaviria, Rowe is another competitor who isn't the fastest, but has just the right combination of stats to make an impact in this race.
Ciolek is similar to Guarnieri in all skills except his weaker energy stats, which could be crucial in a race like this.
Tsatevich is the best puncher among the favourites, and will be looking to make a mark on the numerous undulations to drop his faster rivals.
Bar is similarly capable as Rowe, with better puncher skills, and slower top speed.
| FLA | HIL | SPR | Rowe | 78 | 66 | 79 | Vanbilsen | 78 | 69 | 72 | Kragh Andersen | 77 | 64 | 80 | Bonifazio | 77 | 65 | 78 | Bar | 77 | 70 | 77 | Breen | 77 | 70 | 73 | Atkins | 77 | 58 | 72 | Tennant | 77 | 69 | 67 |
Rowe and Kragh Andersen stand out as the flat specialists with the best sprint in the field. both have passable skills on the hill and should not fall into too much trouble. Bonifazio and Bar, too, are no slouches in the sprint, but will probably need some meters headstart over better sprinters to win a bunch sprint. Vanbilsen is a part of the Lierse flat support for Gaviria, but is an accomplished Roleur in his own right. Breen always has the flair of an over-performance, while Atkins and Tennant should not be counted out, if they get a sniff of an opportunity.
| FLA | HIL | SPR | Vogt | 73 | 80 | 62 | Tsatevich | 74 | 77 | 75 | Afonso | 68 | 77 | 57 | Haas | 71 | 76 | 68 | Ludvigsson | 67 | 76 | 67 | Brandao | 68 | 76 | 53 | Paajanen | 69 | 75 | 67 | Müller | 68 | 75 | 64 | Jung | 66 | 75 | 63 | De Plus | 71 | 75 | 59 | Budyak | 67 | 75 | 57 |
Vogt is by far the best puncher in the field, and will need to attack from distance if he is to successfully get away from the fast men. Tsatevich is the best overall rider in this lot, with a decent sprint to go with his hill abilities, and is the more realistic pick for a good result. It looks difficult for the others to win simply by their puncher skills in a race like this, but strangers things have happened!

If Ciolek had been performing better then a top 10 might have been sufficient, but unfortunately that isn't the case, so I need a top 5 result here.
Thanks for the preview Abhishek

Interesting course here, expecting a sprint but could very well end up with a reduced field in the right weather conditions.

No expectations. Chances are AKA will be dropped/anonymous, but it won't be reduced enough for Haas to make an impact.

It'd be nice to get a good result for a change, but admitedly this is not our best chance.
Guarnieri seems like a good bet so I'm betting on him.
Thanks for the preview and yet another report Abhishkek

Hoping Cav can make it for a bunch sprint but I have my doubts.

Certainly fielded a weakened team here - just hope that Bar can pull something out the bag, especially if theres a lot of wind about

No big hopes for Lo Cicero in such a long and undulating race. Was quite surprised to learn he won this race before, cause I certainly don't see him as any favourite here and I don't think his top speed will help him.
So pleeeeease prove me wrong Ivano |

Ack. Exciting finish, but really painful that Vanspeybroeck launched what would be the winning selection only to sit up when the final attack was made. Combine that with other disorganization in our base and we get another zero pointer. Having 3 guys 23-27 just isn't helpful.
Exciting race and terrific report!

3rd!!! Tennant has been on a nice run of results now which is good to see, shame we didnt have Bar in the final selection rather than Tennant but we'll take the points on offer. Bar in 18th may have delivered us some more points on top which we'll take as well.
Congrats Jandal on the win

Cav had a senior moment attacking at 32km, did he think the finish line was 30km earlier?
If he had saved that energy he might have managed 5th instead of 10th, but it’s still some points. Lead out Gough in 20th was a pleasant surprise and might add a few more points perhaps.
Congrats to jandal and thanks for the report Abhishek.

LUKE ROWE What a ride, what a race, what a result! Our biggest in PCT probably, certainly our first overall race win since we promoted. Was hoping he could do something here but he surprised me a bit, I didn't think we'd end up pulling it off when he attacked given how Down Under Classic went but he was so so strong!
Turns out to get our cobblers to have a result you just need to separate them and send them to non-cobbled races, with Rowe 1st here and Debesay 2nd in Lisbon what a double header for us. Now the momentum is with us (Ukraine notwithstanding) and the survival fight is well and truly on Thanks Abhishek for the report, great stuff as always

Didn't even realise I'd sent Salleh here as he wasn't mentioned in the favourites list but both Aregger and Page were, but he still manged to get a nice 16th place to make sure we take something from this one.

Vantomme's sprint wasn't that bad, but we could've been more active. Congrats jandal and thanks Abhishek for the report!
