Stage 6
We’re at the race’s queen stage. We can’t say for sure that the GC will be decided today, since we still have tomorrow’s 15 kilometer time trial. But the gaps could become large enough for that stage not to matter as much. A bad day today can eliminate all chances, that’s for sure, and if anyone wants to challenge the Top 4 for a podium spot, they’ll have to attack today. Have a look at the Top 15 of the GC:

A secondary focus is on the mountain classification. As we can see here, four riders are still within reach of the polkadot jersey:

The first two categorized mountains have a maximum of 26 points to collect, with another 16 if the breakaway makes it over the Cat-1 climb. Lastly, there have been a few time trialists that have struggled with the time limit on previous stages. It seems less of a problem here with the climbs beginning only in the second half, but it’s something to look out for nonetheless. With all that in mind, let’s head into the race:
We have a large breakaway of 15 riders with 3’30 on the peloton. The riders are
Ivanov Barton Ben Nasser Nych Costagli Areruya Teklehaimanot Bartl Christodoulos Penko Bardet Pantano Gomez Juul-Jensen Quintana Fraile
Ivanov is the only one interested in the mountain points, but there are a lot of top climbers in this group. And some with GC ambitions, even: Fraile is 16th overall, Costagli 17th and Pantano Gomez 21st.
Ivanov takes six points ahead of Fraile and Areruya. He’s now only seven points behind Rolland – a fifth place on the HC climb is enough to take the jersey.
We also see a small gap, which will be closed shortly but may be an indication for later.
The intermediate sprint is uncontested, here’s the order:
1. Juul-Jensen
2. Areruya
3. Bartl
The breakaway enters La Cumbre Peak with a little more than two minutes on the peloton. Here’s a closer look at the climb:
Both the breakaway and the peloton don’t go too fast. Only Christodoulos drops from the group, the peloton still has 95 riders in it.
Penko and Nych are the next to fall behind as the pace up front does increase a bit.
Ivanov takes the full points and charge of the mountain classification! Barton, Ben Nasser and Juul-Jensen were dropped and caught by the peloton, which consists of around 50 riders over the summit. All GC riders are in there.
With Fraile and Areruya also gone, 7 riders enter Laurel Springs together, 2 minutes ahead of the peloton.
Grmay, Carapaz and Abal lead the peloton. The break is in sight, but it’s still a bit more than a minute in front. No attacks either up front or from the peloton with 2,4 kilometres from the summit.
Until now! Costagli accelerates, Ivanov right behind him!
And almost at the same time, Slagter attacks from the pack! Finally, some action!
The leading duo crosses the summit with a little under 30 seconds on the group behind them, which now includes Slagter. The peloton is another 55 seconds down the road.
27 riders are still in the peloton. A few of the Top 20 are missing from this group: Klemme, 10th after his breakaway success on stage 4, Fraile, who was 16th but has to pay the price for today’s efforts in the break, and Kratochvila (20th) have been dropped.
We’re into Brush Peak, the final climb of the day, and the gaps are the same as atop Laurel Springs. Here’s a closer look at these 5,5 kilometres to the finish line:
Slagter catches up to the leading duo! The peloton is still 1’30 behind them, 4,4 kilometres to go.
Meintjes attacks from the peloton, trying to secure his podium place – or attack for the win. But Pluchkin is immediately there to respond.
As Meintjes and Pluchkin charge up the climb, the leading trio is almost caught by their former companions.
Fourth in the GC Lawrence Warbasse is in trouble! And 10th overall Ji is just a little ahead, also with problems.
Amador and Chiarello lead the chase going into the final two kilometres.
Pluchkin easily rides past the escapees and takes the lead. Meintjes is still with him and Slagter tries to latch onto them as well, as does Costagli. The rest of the peloton catches up to the other escapees.
Into the final kilometer, Pluchkin takes a small lead. Meintjes, Slagter and Costagli have 30 seconds on the rest of the peloton …
… where Amador attacks with Berhane right behind him.
Seventh overall Penasa is another rider in trouble, but the climb flattens out a little now, maybe that gives him the chance to stay with the top favorites.
Pluchkin takes the stage a few seconds ahead of Meintjes!
Amador’s attack was enough to go past Slagter and Costagli to take third place. Berhane is with the two former escapees and finishes fifth ahead of the Italian.
Ranaweera finishes seventh, a few seconds ahead of Faglum Karlsson – enough to take white from him! But the gap is just five seconds and they’re comparable time trialists!
Bennett and Chiarello complete the Top 10 ahead of a recovered Ji, Quintana, Pomoshnikov and Bardet.
Talansky, Choi, Teklehaimanot and Bartl are next. They are all given the same time as Faglum Karlsson.
Penasa finishes 23rd and loses a few places, but not as many as …
… Warbasse, who drops from 4th to 13th overall.
With the slow-ish pace of this stage, all riders make the time limit comfortably.
Pluchkin takes the lead in the points classification and he has secured the overall win with this performance. But behind him, there’s still a lot in flux. Amador trails Meintjes by just two seconds, it seems likely that he’ll make those up in the time trial tomorrow.
Their podium places are secure, but there are only six seconds between places 4 and 7! And only 21 between 9 and 13. Should make for an exciting concluding day!
