Race Report, Stage 9

Stage 9 of the Tour du Maroc, the last ride of the PTHC peloton (in 2019). As they say it is all downhill from here. Literally. The stages is 176 km from Kourkouda to Taroudant. The stage runs generally downhill all the way with a mix of flat sections and steady descents. So it looks like one for the sprinters. We have 3 sprint points along the way. Theoretically, there are enough bonus seconds available for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fpc.png Monsalve to take Yellow but that would be quite a feat.

Barring something unexpected the GC (pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ebd.png Dombrowski), Young rider (pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/rpn.png Kudus) and Mountains are settled (pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fab.png Hacecky) are settled. But the points jersey is very much up for grabs.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/isa.png Contreras needs to gain 3 points on pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ebd.png Dombrowski while making sure riders like pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/tti.png Samolenkov and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/mos.png Baska don’t gain a lot of ground on him.

The team jersey is likely headed for Gazelle but if Desigual could get a rider in a winning break they might have a shot at snatching it.

The stage favorites show up as:

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Maroc/S9/fav.jpg

Immediately we have a flurry of attacks, 8 riders in 3 groups right now but others still trying to get away. Many of the usual suspects represented including– Podium Ambition, Grieg, Carlberg and Swisslion.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Maroc/S9/02.jpg

The peloton, led by Indosat, not happy with that group and with 14km gone everyone is back together. A few k later we get a new set of attackers, two groups of 3.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Maroc/S9/03.jpg

The new breakaway is acceptable to everyone and they are allowed to go free. With 147k to go their lead is 3’11. The riders are:
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/itd.png Cosnefroy
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/kul.png Baugnies
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/t3a.png Robov
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/sct.png Zekavica
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/sct.png Rajovic
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/xr0.png Higuita

Two for Swisslion plus 4 singletons. Kulczyk joining the break since waiting for the sprint with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/kul.png Lavoine hasn’t been very successful. None of these riders closer than 40 minutes on the GC.

With 125k gone the break have passed the first sprint point and the lead has stabilized at about 3’40. Indosat and Farfetch on the front.

96km to go the break passes the 2nd sprint point, their lead is 2’48. Tinkoff has joined the other two teams in chasing.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Maroc/S9/04.jpg

80km to go for the peloton the lead is 3’00 minutes but now they are getting more serious. On the front are:
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/tti.png Kulikovskiy
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fpc.png Ssabagwanya
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ino.png Schachmann
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fpc.png Tizza
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/tti.png Shalunov
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ino.png De Souza

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Maroc/S9/05.jpg

The Yellow Jersey well positioned behind them.

The breakaway is about to pass the 3rd sprint point.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Maroc/S9/06.jpg

They have 53km to go. For most of the last 20k the lead has hovered around 3 minutes as 6 peloton riders chased 6 breakaway riders. But the 3 chasing teams have added a few more riders and the lead is down to 2’42.

30km to go for the peloton and the lead is 1’29.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Maroc/S9/07.jpg

15km to go the attacks have started in the breakaway. The first group on the road is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/kul.png Baugnies and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/xr0.png Higuita and they have 49 seconds on the peloton, the other four have 36 seconds.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Maroc/S9/08.jpg

8.5 km to go and the catch seems to be inevitable.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Maroc/S9/09.jpg

4.4 km to go. The break still have a few seconds but it is about a sprint now. In the middle of the road, ISA-Hexacta, perhaps feeling the pressure of the winning the points jersey, have formed a sprint train for the first time. On the right pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cdb.png Asgreen has brought up pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cdb.png Vanspeybrouck, who must be considering an attack. But the pace is really high. A little further back Tinkoff is also forming a train and the other sprinters are all in the vicinity.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Maroc/S9/10.jpg

2.8 km to ride. The break still just ahead. On the left pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/tti.png Kulikovskiy pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/tti.png Kolesnikov, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/tti.png Samolenkov. Followed by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/vlv.png Markus, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ino.png Goss, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fpc.png Van der Sande, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/mos.png Baska, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/gen.png De Buyst and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/yor.png Redecker.

On the right pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/isa.png Mraouni, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/isa.png Santos and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/isa.png Contreras followed by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/rpn.png Nizzolo.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/kul.png Lavoine well back

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Maroc/S9/11.jpg

1500 meters to go. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/kul.png Baugnies, the last breakaway riders will be caught as we get to the red kite.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/isa.png Mraouni dropping off as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/isa.png Santos launches for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/isa.png Contreras. Santos is an excellent lead out but 1.5k is a long way. On the left pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/tti.png Kolesnikov the last rider for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/tti.png Samolenkov. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/vlv.png Markus behind him. Behind that a mess of riders including many other lead out riders.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Maroc/S9/12.jpg

1km to go pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/isa.png Santos with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/isa.png Contreras and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/tti.png Kolesnikov with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/tti.png Samolenkov have a clear lead. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ino.png Speirs the only other rider with them. But he has lost pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ino.png Goss.

Goss is just behind pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fpc.png Yates who is leading the main group with the rest of the sprinters. The fading breakaway riders are creating traffic.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Maroc/S9/13.jpg

600 meters to go pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/isa.png Contreras, far left, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/tti.png Samolenkov 2nd from the right launch their sprints. The other three up front are the lead out riders. Behind those are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ino.png Goss then pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fpc.png Yates, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fpc.png Van der Sande, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/vlv.png Markus and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/mos.png Baska.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Maroc/S9/14.jpg

300 meters pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/isa.png Contreras hits the front, looks like it is between him and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/tti.png Samolenkov. Although pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ino.png Speirs is hanging tough on the far left.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Maroc/S9/15.jpg

100 meters and it looks like pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/tti.png Samolenkov has a slight lead.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Maroc/S9/16.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/tti.png Samolenkov wins stage 9. A deserved victory for Tinkoff who have worked hard throughout the race.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Maroc/S9/17.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/isa.png Contreras will settle for 2nd to go with his two stage wins and the points jersey. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ino.png Speirs with an opportunistic 3rd. The strong lead outs today really took the other riders out of contention.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ino.png Goss makes it two in the top four for Indosat.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Maroc/S9/18.jpg

The rest of the top 10 are:
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fpc.png Yates
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fpc.png Van der Sande
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/vlv.png Markus
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/mos.png Baska
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/isa.png Santos
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/rpn.png Nizzolo

The other jerseys will stay as they were at the start of the day. Congratulations to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ebd.png Dombrowski on a measured ride that turned last year’s second place into a victory in the 2019 Tour du Maroc.
