Stage 5 here usually means the Willunga Hill and same in 2019. The route itself changed couple times with a double climb, uphill finish or as in 2019 a single climb and a flat finish after the descent.
Gautier is having the GC lead and did win the exact same stage last year, so is the rider to be watched the most!
Except for Yates, Bellis and maybe even Houle the sprint of the puncheurs is rather similar. Neither really strong nor any bad. The fight for bonus seconds is key here in Australia and this could become interesting.
Last year showed that despite gaps, the sprinters that regularly gained bonuses were able to finish in a decent GC spot. This should be a motivation for those, that are still in range.
Ford
Van Aert
Van der Ploeg
Vichot
Othman
Vincent
form the breakaway with some potential relay stations later on.
A bit different to the last days. Today Kulczyk is hugely showing themselves in the front rows for their GC rider Vakoc. Lavoine, who was so far rather invisible also up there to chase.
Same goes for Swisslion. After Ciolek did well so far Bilbao could still climb a bit and seems to have good legs today.
With 18km to go and soon arriving to Old Willunga Road the gap is down to 45s and Iberia are taking over. Brockhoff, Domene, King, Kosic and Gallego Martin. Their pace is really high and makes positioning difficult but apparently they are willed to deliver Degenkolb a good position into the climb to avoid losing too much time.
An Aussie leads the group into the climb. 3.2km to the top and William Ford leads the group of six with just 30s to the stretched peloton.
Soon Van Aert though takes over and goes into the lead. Not really known as a puncheur, the prologue specialist seems to be the strongest, which is rather weird as Vichot drops back already! Likely the French was not supposed to go for himself but instead be late support for Guarnieri or Schreurs?
Half way up and so far no attack!
Degenkolb seems to have asked his team to reduce the pace a bit but other teams jumped in. Lavoine for Vakoc, Davison for Houle and Manninen for Gautier right now! Not the fastest uphill riders you would think. Likely the reason why the break still has a bit of a gap.
Then Gautier, Yates, Schreurs, Stuyven, Landa, Flügel, Trofimov, Barbin, Vakoc, Borges all follow next with the sprinters such as Degenkolb, Holloway, Guarnieri etc. just around them though.
Van Aert reaches the top as first and is getting 10 points. Behind him only Othman remained seconds ahead of the peloton.
But really weird to not see any attacks there! Was the pace still too fast? Unlikely.
Legs too bad? For all? Unlikely.
At least this gives the sprinters some more chance if we don`t see a late move here, which might be possible as many riders should be at their limit.
Rakuten so far was very invisible. But on paper they have a decent puncheur in Froome and a roleur in Arashiro here. Seeing them line up with 4 riders now might mean an attack is coming?
At least it`s the end of the breakaway.
Look at this! An attack but it`s not the puncheur!
Holloway obviously another rider with a great motor on the flat and he uses it to attack over the top.
Behind him a trio is following as the US rider is 9th in the GC just 21s off and a big threat.
Yates, Vakoc and also Degenkolb! That`s an interesting scenario now and Valio under pressure behind.
Manninen giving up his own chances to win todays stage. As loyal team mate he is setting the pace for Gautier.
Houle right behind him and the gap really isn`t big. In especially as once fusioned, their effort to work with each other wasn`t huge.
3km and the group is caught and soon the sprint will start. Right now the positioning is easy. First the recent attackers, then most puncheurs and then the remaining sprinters.
One sprinter though came from far behind and surprised many, that still waited:
Guarnieri, 12th in the GC, 31s off needs a big result today to improve in the GC and he goes very fast.
Degenkolb and Holloway realize the danger and accelerate as well.
Houle right behind him also a big threat for the stage with Borges being surprisingly fast on the left.
Guarnieri can`t go any faster and seems to have no chance. It looks like a fight between Degenkolb, Holloway and now also Houle, who is in between those two.
From behind Yates can`t be ignored and neither Gautier, Bellis, Barbin or Borges.
But it`s Degenkolb! 2nd stage win for him and a rather surprising one on todays hill stage. In especially in front of such big peloton.
2nd as well a small surprise as Guarnieri was able to accelerate another time and was close actually while Houle in 3rd lost a bit towards the end but still ahead of Holloway.
5th for Yates with Gautier also getting bonus seconds as 6th ahead of Borges, Bellis, Barbin and Kreder.
GC wise this is now interesting. Gautier just defended his lead due to his sprint today. But it`s down to 1s to Degenkolb with a flat crit race left!
Borges in 3rd also jsut 9s down with Holloway following in 4th and 17s.
Guarnieri as 6th behind Edmondson also just 21s and in reach of the GC win still. That`s 3 sprinters within the 25s potential bonuses, which is not good news for the puncheurs, that failed to gain time today.
