Tour of Cyprus - Stage 2
Marcovdw
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C1/Cyprus/S2/profile.jpg

Stage two: Limassol - Limassol. Last year this stage was filled with cobblestones, but over the winter the local authorities have removed those and left the dirt roads behind. By no means this is safer, as some of them are on a downhill and with the weather forecast of rain, it will still be a difficult stage. The sprinters want revenge for yesterday's failure but that is not guaranteed, not only because of the dirt roads but also for the amount of climbing.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C1/Cyprus/S2/01.jpg

Four riders attack almost immediately from the start and would form today's breakaway:
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/bia.png Zaccanti
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fox.png Wilson
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cdb.png Foss
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/eue.png Conci

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C1/Cyprus/S2/02.jpg

An intermediate sprint on a dirt road, questionable safety but no major accidents. Zaccanti takes the win ahead of Wilson and Foss. The sprinters did not bother for the points or bonus seconds despite being close by at this point, the stage win is the only thing they can achieve.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C1/Cyprus/S2/03.jpg

After the sprint the gap increased to 4'17 at the top of the category three Zanakia. Order at the top: Foss - Zaccanti - Conci. No points or Wilson, but he has three more mountain sprints to get on the board.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C1/Cyprus/S2/04.jpg

Close call at the category three Lofou: Zaccanti - Wilson - Conci. Zaccanti now tied with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/kaz.png Lau in the mountains classification at 10 points. The gap to the peloton fluctuates between 4 and 5 minutes.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C1/Cyprus/S2/05.jpg

Category four Mandria: Zaccanti - Conci - Wilson. Zaccanti will be the leader in the KoM after stage as we only have one category four climb later in the stage and he cannot be overtaken by anyone else in the break. The expected rain has come, making the dirt roads even more treacherous.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C1/Cyprus/S2/06.jpg

Another dirt sprint and another win for Zaccanti. The gap is still five minutes with 110 kilometer to go, but most of the climbing has been done. The peloton reaches the highest point of the stage without drop-outs.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C1/Cyprus/S2/07.jpg

Speaking of the peloton, it are the same teams as yesterday at the front: Swisslion, Berg and UBS. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/sct.png Ciolek, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/bgc.png Kupfernagel and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ubs.png Reinhardt looking for revenge for yesterday, but the teams should not repeat dropping their own GC leader in the process.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C1/Cyprus/S2/08.jpg

Once again Zaccanti is the fastest in a sprint, an intermediate one in Ypsonas. Their lead is coming down, 3 minutes with 77 kilometer to go. A dangerous descent on wet gravel, but everyone got through unscated with the exception of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/eue.png Al Murawwi, who suffered a puncture but managed to return.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C1/Cyprus/S2/09.jpg

The final climb of the day, Fasoula, is won by Conci ahead of Foss and Wilson.. Zaccanti leads the KoM classification after today regardless, with 15 points compared to Conci's 12 and Lau's 10.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C1/Cyprus/S2/10.jpg

The chances of the breakaway are shrinking as the peloton does not want another fail, close to a minute heading into the final 25 kilometer. Conci feels like he has energy left and attacks on a local dirt climb, Zaccanti briefly tried to follow but his fellow Italian is gone for now.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C1/Cyprus/S2/11.jpg

That climb also created a small split in the peloton, 24 riders with most sprinters and GC riders alert at the front. The same teams were still leading, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ubs.png Schelling and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/sct.png Beltran more awake than yesterday and amongst the front. Yellow jersey pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/esc.png Umerbekov amongst those on the wrong side though.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C1/Cyprus/S2/12.jpg

A nice drone shot coming out of the dirt section, the breakaway reunited again but their lead is now only 30 seconds over the front peloton, which has doubled in size. Another 30 seconds to the group Umerbekov which seems reparable.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C1/Cyprus/S2/13.jpg

Mass regroup with 11 kilometer to go, the front peloton catching the breakaway but also being caught by the yellow jersey group. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/bgc.png Almeida, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ubs.png Abreu, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ubs.png Reichenbach, Reinhardt, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/sct.png Kasa, Schelling, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/bgc.png Chiarello, Ciolek the front eight riders. UBS, Swisslion and Berg the three teams attempting to make the trains.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C1/Cyprus/S2/14.jpg

No real organization though. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/bgc.png Destribois and Almeida lead, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cdb.png Appollonio in third position, Reinhardt surrounded by Reichenbach and Schelling ahead of the other sprinters: pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/wcc.png Angarita, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/bia.png Dockx, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fox.png Korzh, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/emo.png Vanoverschelde, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/kaz.png Tleubayev and Ciolek. Kupfernagel only in 50th position at the moment despite his team's presence at the front. Umerbekov and the GC-favorites also around there in case of another split.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C1/Cyprus/S2/15.jpg

Three Bergs sprinting against one another: Almeida, Destribois and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/bgc.png Rodrigues who came from far behind. This looks like an unorganized mess now that Kupfernagel is out of contention. Appollonio has taken the lead amongst the sprinters but is now the lead-out for every other sprinter

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C1/Cyprus/S2/16.jpg

Logically, the Bergs implode before we even reach the final kilometer. Angarita and Reinhardt alongside Appollonio on the first row. The second row contains Ciolek, Korzh and Dockx. On the third row we have Vanoverschelde, Tleubayev and Berzh. Even Umerbekov wants to mix himself in the sprint, he's coming on the left side from far behind.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C1/Cyprus/S2/17.jpg

The front three started too early. Ciolek and Korzh come alongside while Dockx looks for the small gap between Reinhardt and the sidewalk. Tleubayev coming out of Ciolek's slipstream. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cfe.png Bercz, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/kul.png Tewelde, Vanoverschelde and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/des.png Yates battling for the lower positions.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C1/Cyprus/S2/18.jpg

200 meter to go, Korzh leading but Dockx has found his gap and is approaching. Tleubayev trying to get past Ciolek. Bercz past Appollonio but there's simply no room to get further up the field.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C1/Cyprus/S2/19.jpg

Close call but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/kaz.png Ruslan Tleubayev timed his sprint best, he wins the second stage of the Tour of Cyprus. Party at the amateur team KazMunayGas, the second consecutive Kazakh stage winner after Umerbekov.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C1/Cyprus/S2/20.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fox.png Korzh and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/bia.png Dockx complete the stage podium. Ciolek and Reinhardt fourth and fifth after their teams did all the work today. Angarita sixth, Bercz seventh, Tewelde eighth, Yates ninth. Appollonio completes the top ten ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/esc.png Meyer, Umerbekov, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/vlv.png Tiller and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/and.png Kip. Kupfernagel found his way up to fifteenth while Vanoverschelde dropped all the way to 27th.

No time gaps in the peloton except a few domestiques, so pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/esc.png Umerbekov stays the GC leader. With his four points he also remains leader in the points classification. The polka dot is now on the shoulders of Zaccanti. Lau lost that jersey but remains the best young rider. KazMunayGas - ChampionSystem unsurprisingly leading the teams classification.
