Four riders represent Sauber, while Olei is loaned out to Desigual. The only rider without Sauber backing is Menicucci.
Noia sacrifices himself for his teammates, Scarponi the favorite on this hilly route. The last amateur standing is caught on the penultimate hill.
Noia's acceleration means six riders get clear, coincidentally all professionals.
Maccagli brings the riders onto the final climb. He has a small lead with Scarponi leaving a bit of a gap, reigning champion Olei behind him.
Olei goes first. Menicucci, Putti and Scarponi from top to bottom behind him. Noia and Maccagli content with fifth and sixth.
It is a successful title defense from Federico Olei, the second title for the 23 year old. Menicucci finishes second meaning the Sauber riders all finish in the bottom four. Putti even beats Scarponi to the podium, who admittedly was being blocked by Olei. Maccagli beats Noia in a sprint for honor and fifth place.
The biggest day in San Marinese cycling history came when Maccagli won the U23 Time Trial World Championship. He is also the best time trialist in the country.
Noia hopes to beat his teammate, but 1h08'15 is probably not enough.
Indeed not. Maccagli is 2'33 faster, for some reason wearing a Swiss jersey. Perhaps it was more aerodynamic?
Andrea Enrico Maccagli can go to the tailor to make him a San Marinese jersey.
