Today the TTT, in and around Banyoles a municipality of around 20.000 inhabitants, at the banks of Lake Banyoles. About 120 km north of Barcelona.
The 40 km ITT is quite hilly so even though we must expect the better tempo riders to be fastest today, some climbing skill will no doubt help.
16°C partly clouded, winds at 6km/h falling to 2km/h in the afternoon.
Reminder of expectations:

Swisslion Cycling Team 2nd sector 36’30”
Desigual 15:37” new 2nd at first sector beating UBS with 1” but losing 6” to Minions

Kulczyk – Alitalia 2nd sector 34’44, 24” behind Rakuten
Andorra Cycling Project 16’50, 1’19 behind Minions
DK Zalgiris new best full time, 51’31 that was 49” faster than Berg and they have clearly been much faster than Berg on the last two compared to the first sector, but it is very early to say if they will meet expectation of 7-8 best, and how much time Intxausti may lose to other top climbers.
Valio - Viking Genetics 2nd best 2nd sector time, 34’27 just 7” behind Rakuten.
Sauber Petronas Racing 16’05 losing 34” the last team to pass the 1st sector time check
All 1st sector times.
1 Minions 00:15:31 2 Desigual 00:15:37 3 ENI - MOL 00:15:38 4 Team UBS 00:15:38 5 Azteca - NBCSN 00:15:47 6 Rakuten Pro Cycling 00:15:48 7 Valio - Viking Genetics 00:15:53 8 cycleYorkshire 00:15:54 9 Berg Cycles 00:15:58 10 Kulczyk - Alitalia 00:16:00 11 DK Zalgiris 00:16:01 12 Sauber Petronas Racing 00:16:05 13 Team Popo4Ever p/b Nemiroff 00:16:16 14 Adastra - Hell Energy Cycling 00:16:17 15 World Cycling Centre 00:16:30 16 La Vie Claire 00:16:30 17 Xero Racing 00:16:37 18 Carrefour - ESPN 00:16:42 19 Andorra Cycling Project 00:16:50 20 Swisslion Cycling Team 00:16:51 21 Repsol - Honda 00:17:08
Carrefour – ESPN full time 54’08” not as bad as Repsol but still losing 2’37 at a point where we haven’t seen any of the fastest teams yet. Chamorro having a lot to make up in the mountains
ENI – MOL 2nd sector 2nd best with 34’21, 1” slower than Rakuten, so lost some time to them over this sector.
Team Popo4Ever p/b Nemiroff full time 53’00” losing 1’29 to Zalgiris, Padun will have to make wonders in the mountains to compensate for this loss, but may buy him freedom to go from a distance.
La Vie Claire 2nd sector 35’36” losing 1’16 to Rakuten
Adastra - Hell Energy Cycling full time 52’50 losing 1’19 to Zalgiris, could look like approx. center result for a CT team not too bad, the question remains will it be enough for their relative weak climber squad to bring home some points.
Team UBS new best second sector time 34’00” 20” faster than Rakuten.
cycleYorkshire new best full time 51’25”, 6” faster than DK Zalgiris. Meintjes with this already laid distance to some competitors, but many strong teams remaining potentially taking time on him, hard to say if it is good or bad at this point.
Azteca – NBCSN 2nd sector 34’28, 28” behind Team UBS
World Cycling Centre full time 53’26”, 2’01 behind cycleYorkshire
Minions with new best 2nd sector time 33’57” 3“ faster than Team UBS
Xero Racing 53’57” a loss of 2’32” to cycleYorkshire, we may expect George Bennett to lose at least another ½ minute to climbers from UBS, Minions and Desigual
Desigual new best 2nd sector time 33’48 that is 9” faster than Minions, and a very fast 2nd from them.
Rakuten Pro Cycling new best full time 50’53, cutting another 32” from the previous best time and with that Chen Shikai should be within the climbers without any major disadvantage before heading into the mountains.
Ten teams have set a full time by now, it looks like this:
1 Rakuten Pro Cycling 00:50:53 2 cycleYorkshire 00:51:25 3 DK Zalgiris 00:51:31 4 Berg Cycles 00:52:20 5 Adastra - Hell Energy Cycling 00:52:50 6 Team Popo4Ever p/b Nemiroff 00:53:00 7 World Cycling Centre 00:53:26 8 Xero Racing 00:53:57 9 Carrefour - ESPN 00:54:08 10 Repsol - Honda 00:55:52
Andorra Cycling Project 2nd sector in 36’25”, 2’37” slower than Desigual.
Swisslion Cycling Team full time 54’29”, a loss of 3’36”, attending with a rather weak squad not unexpected
Sauber Petronas Racing last team today passing the 2nd time check in 34’46, 11th at +58”
All 2nd sector times:
1 Desigual 00:33:48 2 Minions 00:33:57 3 Team UBS 00:34:00 4 Rakuten Pro Cycling 00:34:20 5 ENI - MOL 00:34:21 6 Valio - Viking Genetics 00:34:27 7 Azteca - NBCSN 00:34:28 8 DK Zalgiris 00:34:30 9 cycleYorkshire 00:34:30 10 Kulczyk - Alitalia 00:34:44 11 Sauber Petronas Racing 00:34:46 12 Berg Cycles 00:34:59 13 Adastra - Hell Energy Cycling 00:35:16 14 Team Popo4Ever p/b Nemiroff 00:35:17 15 La Vie Claire 00:35:36 16 World Cycling Centre 00:35:42 17 Carrefour - ESPN 00:36:06 18 Xero Racing 00:36:06 19 Andorra Cycling Project 00:36:25 20 Swisslion Cycling Team 00:36:30 21 Repsol - Honda 00:37:25
Kulczyk – Alitalia full time 51’34”, 41” lost to Rakuten, also David Abal must expect at least 1 minute or more disadvantage to riders like Tenorio, Uran, Schelling, but that could as we have seen be a lot worse.
Valio - Viking Genetics full time 51’18”, 25” behind Rakuten, with that seems like Andrew Talansky will end up in a relative good position moving into the mountains.
ENI – MOL full time 50’59, just 6” behind Rakuten and with that Ki Ho Choi and Carapaz in a rather good situation before the mountain stages.
La Vie Claire full time 53’21” losing 2’28”
Team UBS with new best 50:21, stunning 32” faster than Rakuten, a guaranty that Patrick Schelling will get a head start on most competitors in the mountains.
Azteca – NBCSN full time 51’23” losing 1’02” to UBS, Ryan Eastman lost time today but not bad compared to many others.
Minions new best 50’19” cutting 2” of the UBS time, now Rigoberto Uran in a perfect position to win or get 2nd in this race.
Desigual with a bad last section compared to Minions full time 50’25” losing 6”, but with this Justo Tenorio probably still the overall GC favorite
Andorra Cycling Project full time 54’08”, a loss of 3’49”. Machado another one of the better climbers who needs to be very aggressive to get a result in the GC after this.
Sauber Petronas Racing 51’53” +1’34”, as expected a mid-field result. Suranga Ranaweera may get out of this with a GC result but he better over perform some.
