George Town and Launceston are only fifty kilometer apart, but we take the scenic route of 205.8 kilometer. I don't mind, the area is lovely, though it introduces an extra bit of climbing for the riders. Nevertheless, I expect a sprint in the streets of Tasmania's second most populous city.
The break is hotly contested as, right from the start, 16 riders attack in three separate waves:
Bol
Eaton
Van Avermaet
Goldstein
Bettiol
Fritsch
Peng
Watson
McCarthy
Luchshenko
Marycz
Nareklishvili
Eiking
Tsatevich
Gogl
Bernard
This big attempt also contains riders who some teams feel do not deserve a head start into tomorrow's stage, so Festina, SPAR, Tinkoff, Evonik and T-Mobile veto this attempt. Back to the drawing board.
Five riders from the original break tried again:
Peng
Bol
Van Avermaet
Eiking
Eaton
They are not immediately chased down, suggesting this composition is acceptable to the teams.
On the first categorized climb of the day, category three Golconda Road, Van Avermaet takes six points for the mountains classification with Eiking taking four and Eaton two. Peng took no points, but Bol is nowhere to be found. Where is the Dutchman?
The intermediate sprint right after the downhill was also won by Van Avermaet in the same order as the mountain sprint.
Bol is overtaken by Nareklishvili and Fiedler, two riders who decided they want to be in the break after all. Riders like Vlatos and Predatsch had been dropped in the climb but managed to rejoin afterwards.
The intermediate sprint in Gravelly Beach is also won by Van Avermaet ahead of Eiking and Peng. The gap over the peloton is four minutes with 115 kilometer to go. Bol, Nareklishvili and Fiedler dropped back to the peloton as it became clear they wouldn't be able to (re)join. Isostar, Festina, SPAR and Vesuvio are the teams which are tasked with the chase today.
At Forest Road, also a climb of the third category, Eiking emerges victorious. A close finish between Eaton and Van Avermaet for second is decided in the Belgian's favor, meaning he and Eiking are tied at the top with ten points, with Norwegian leading on the tiebreaker. Eaton the only other rider on the board with four points. Peng lost some ground on the climb but was allowed to return.
With fifty kilometer to go the gap is down to two minutes, which means everything is pointing towards a mass sprint. A few more teams helping out in the chase, Tinkoff, Popo4Ever and Evonik with one or two riders each.
Eaton is the first rider to get nervous by the approaching peloton and attacks with 40 kilometer to go, when the gap is back at a minute. Peng followed him and eventually GVA and Eiking also returned. It did increase their lead slightly. Yechezkel is the only rider who fell victim to a mechanical failure today, which meant he ended up behind the peloton at the finish.
The break survives for the final intermediate sprint, which Van Avermaet wins by quite a margin. He and Eiking actually rode away before the sprint, but the Norwegian has been caught by Peng. For Eaton it looks to be finished.
Festina increases the pace, catching Eaton and Peng with Eiking and Van Avermaet having only a slight lead. At the back of the group, this caught some riders off guard. The second peloton contains some big names, riders which are in contention for the overall victory or a good result:
Dyball
Wisniowski
Rosskopf
Bobridge
Ponzi
Bevin
Hagen
Sagan
Kung
Gidich
Yates
Preidler
The last two riders are caught twelve kilometer before the line, Festina continuing to lead with their two GC aces, Koretzky and Lecuisinier, setting the pace. Evonik and Podium Ambiton are the other teams attempting to build a sprint train. Good news for the the favorites who were behind, a large part of their group has made it back to the peloton, with only a few individuals left behind.
In the pouring rain, Oliveira suffers a puncture ten kilometers from the finish. As he was near the front of the group when it happened, and the neutral bike happened to have his size and format, he got back up before the entire group had passed, meaning he won't lose time. A lucky escape for the Portuguese.
Evonik is the only team able to build a capable train: Becis, Dzamastagic and Van Stayen. Behind them are Kennaugh and Guerao. Coquard has Petit and Koretzky around him, but even with a big imagination this cannot be called a sprint train. Ewan glued to the Frenchman's wheel.
Under the kite, Dzamastagic is yet to release Van Stayen. Petit looks to be sprinting against Coquard instead of helping. Guerao coming out of Coquard's slipstream after switching sides, with Kennaugh alongside Van Stayen. Samolenkov, Ewan, Van der Sande, Scully and Reimer are the other sprinters in contention, even Ponzi throws himself in the mix.
At 500 meters, it is a battle between Coquard and Guerao as Van Stayen is already falling back and Kennaugh doesn't have the speed. Van der Sande on the left looking good with Scully in his wheel. Ewan is boxed in between Guerao and Samolenkov.
Guerao falls back while Van Stayen has found some extra energy, seven riders virtually side-by-side now. From top to bottom of the screen: Van der Sande, Scully, Samolenkov, Ewan, Coquard, Van Stayen and Kennaugh. Coquard leading ever so slightly.
And Bryan Coquard wins in Launceston! Less prestigious than GP Moscow a few days earlier, but a win is a win. Van Stayen had the best train but it only brings him second place, while Kennaugh shows you can finish third without a train. Ewan cannot win in front of his home crowd, finishing fourth ahead of Van der Sande, Scully and Samolenkov. The top ten is completed by Reimer, Ponzi and Spilak. Guerao fell all the way down to fourteenth.
Coquard also takes the GC lead and the points jersey due to his twenty bonus seconds and twenty-five points. Van Avermaet picked up all three intermediates, which is rewarded with second place in the GC and third in the points ahead and behind Van Stayen. Eiking is fourth in the GC and leader in both the mountains classification and the youth classification, though tied with Van Avermaet in the former. Kennaugh, Peng and Eaton are the other riders who picked up bonus seconds on the stage, with Ewan the first rider at twenty seconds in eighth. Aker leads the teams classification though all teams still in the same time.
