Stage 2
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/Other/Avenir/S2/P.jpg

The first road stage of the race is a relatively straightforward one. There are a few short hills in the first half with some mountain points to entice escapees but if all goes as expected, we’ll see a sprint finish in Montauban at the end of the day. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/duo.png Hsu and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fes.png Kalaba are the top favorites, and after a strong performance yesterday, the latter has a good chance to take the overall lead - a third place would suffice.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/Other/Avenir/S2/01.jpg

After a few slow kilometers, the first attacker of the day is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/jay.png Porter, followed surprisingly by second overall pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/bnz.png Reddish. The Kiwi might be eyeing those bonus seconds at the intermediate sprint.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/Other/Avenir/S2/02.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/trg.png Larsen and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/bnz.png Yates go after them.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/Other/Avenir/S2/03.jpg

The last attack, at least for now, comes from Porter’s teammate pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/jay.png Scotson. After a 10th place yesterday, he is within reach of the yellow jersey as well, just five seconds back.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/Other/Avenir/S2/04.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fes.png Festina - Isostar and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/duo.png Duolingo lead the pack but they don’t seem to be worried about the breakaway. The gap quickly grows to more than two minutes.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/Other/Avenir/S2/05.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/Other/Avenir/S2/06.jpg

Two BNZ riders from New Zealand, two Jayco riders from Australia, but it’s the Dane who leads the way to the first mountain sprint.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/Other/Avenir/S2/07.jpg

Alas, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/trg.png Larsen went to early and it’s pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/jay.png Porter who takes five points ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/bnz.png Yates and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/bnz.png Reddish. With a maximum of six points and the second mountain sprint, everything is still on the table though.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/Other/Avenir/S2/08.jpg

The quintet reaches said second mountain sprint with just under three minutes of advance on the peloton. This time, it’s pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/jay.png Scotson leading the way, trying to set up for his teammate pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/jay.png Porter.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/Other/Avenir/S2/09.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/jay.png Porter tries to come around the right side of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/trg.png Larsen, but now pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/bnz.png Yates comes from behind with some pace.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/Other/Avenir/S2/10.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/trg.png Larsen takes the six points, but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/jay.png Porter keeps pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/bnz.png Yates behind him to wear the polkadots tomorrow!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/Other/Avenir/S2/11.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/Other/Avenir/S2/12.jpg

The breakaway is approaching the intermediate sprint that has some significant GC implications. Any Top 3 result here gives pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/bnz.png Reddish the yellow jersey, at least for now. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/jay.png Scotson would need to win while Reddish scores no bonus seconds at all. Both are decently quick, but the best sprinter of the group is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/trg.png Larsen.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/Other/Avenir/S2/13.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/trg.png Larsen opens the sprint, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/bnz.png Reddish to his left. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/jay.png Scotson has a slower start on the other side of the road.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/Other/Avenir/S2/14.jpg

But both Jayco riders gain some steam now! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/bnz.png Reddish has to keep one of them behind him!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/Other/Avenir/S2/15.jpg

And he does! Four seconds move him into the overall lead, pending bonus seconds for sprinters at the finish line, of course.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/Other/Avenir/S2/16.jpg

In the peloton, Centovalli has joined Duolingo and Festina - Isostar at the head, underscoring their ambitions in the sprint with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cen.png Cullaigh.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/Other/Avenir/S2/17.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/Other/Avenir/S2/18.jpg

With the gap coming down to under a minute, we see the traditional attacks from the break. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/trg.png Larsen goes first!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/Other/Avenir/S2/19.jpg

He holds out for quite a while and is only caught with 12 kilometers by his former companions. Immediately, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/bnz.png Yates and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/jay.png Porter attack. Festina and Centovalli still lead the efforts in the peloton, some 30 seconds behind.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/Other/Avenir/S2/20.jpg

Intense efforts by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cen.png Eenkhoorn and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fes.png Van Niekerk finally reel the last escapees in, but we’re only five kilometers from the finish now. The sprint domestiques have to move quickly now.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/Other/Avenir/S2/21.jpg

And they do. The teams of the two top favorites come to the front, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fes.png Vila and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fes.png Veber for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fes.png Kalaba on the left, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/duo.png Affini and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/duo.png Rui Oliveira for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/duo.png Hsu on the right, arguably the stronger train.

The Duolingo squad is followed by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cen.png Cullaigh, Centovalli’s efforts paying off so far. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/vlv.png Halvorsen is next in line. On the left, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/zal.png Ovsyannikov tries to follow Kalaba, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/itd.png Hodeg is around two bike lengths behind him. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/eue.png Jakobsen is a bit further behind.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/Other/Avenir/S2/22.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/duo.png Affini swings to the left, trying to make it more difficult for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fes.png Kalaba and his leadouts, but the two trains are still head to head.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/Other/Avenir/S2/23.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fes.png Veber and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/duo.png Rui Oliveira take over with around 1.3 kilometers to go, still riding close to the fences. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cen.png Cullaigh, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/vlv.png Halvorsen, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/zal.png Ovsyannikov and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/itd.png Hodeg are still the main guys behind them, but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cad.png Moschetti has now found the Colombian’s wheel and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/vlv.png Tiller is also in the mix.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/Other/Avenir/S2/24.jpg

The leadouts stayed at the front for a long time, none of the top two wanted to go first, but now pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/itd.png Hodeg sprints to the front with high speed on the right, drawing level with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/duo.png Hsu. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fes.png Kalaba somehow got boxed in behind pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cen.png Cullaigh, he has to find a way past him if he wants that yellow jersey!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/Other/Avenir/S2/25.jpg

The top favorites struggle to match pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/itd.png Hodeg’s acceleration, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/zal.png Ovsyannikov is closest, but from out of nowhere, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/eue.png Jakobsen charges to the front on the heels of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/eue.png Castrillo on the other side of the road! He’s got pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/phi.png Cherkasov behind him.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/Other/Avenir/S2/26.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/itd.png Hodeg is struggling a little bit now, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cad.png Moschetti and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/eue.png Jakobsen come closer and closer. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/duo.png Hsu, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/vlv.png Halvorsen, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cen.png Cullaigh and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fes.png Kalaba finally find their gear, but they're running out of road!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/Other/Avenir/S2/27.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/vlv.png Halvorsen is the fastest now but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/itd.png Hodeg displays some serious steadfastness. Can he hold on all the way?

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/Other/Avenir/S2/28.jpg

He can! What a strong performance by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/itd.png Alvaro Hodeg to take the win! In a photo finish, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/vlv.png Halvorsen beats pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cad.png Moschetti for second place. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/eue.png Jakobsen finishes fourth after a long sprint ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/zal.png Ovsyannikov. A good job by the Kazakh.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/Other/Avenir/S2/29.jpg

In contrast, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/duo.png Hsu will not be happy with his sixth place. He’s followed by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/aeg.png Ferri, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cen.png Cullaigh, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/eue.png Ganjkhanlou and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fes.png Kalaba, who are all within just centimeters of each other. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/phi.png Cherkasov, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/pum.png Steimle and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/vlv.png Tiller finish ahead of the first GC contenders.

Today, the main sprint teams beat themselves. Duolingo and Festina - Isostar were too focused on distracting each other and they ended up losing track of the rivals behind them. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fes.png Kalaba loses a slam dunk chance to wear the yellow jersey, which instead will rest on … pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/itd.png Hodeg’s shoulders! That’s right - the 20 bonus seconds are enough to tie pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/bnz.png Reddish in the GC, taking the lead by less than a second!

Another flat stage awaits tomorrow - a chance for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fes.png Kalaba to take yellow after all? Or for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/itd.png Hodeg to increase his? We will find out!
