Tour de Romandie
C1: 2/5 - 7/5, 6 stages total 709.2 km
Welcome to Tour de Romandie in French-speaking western Switzerland. With departure in Le Chenit. This is the 13th edition of Tour de Romandie on the MG calendar since 2007.
Last year the race was won by Chen Shikai (Meiji - JR East), after a brilliant breakaway win moving from GC 21st to GC 2nd on stage 5, and taking the last 2” on the final 8 km epilog (ITT).
But we can’t look backwards to predict this race as we got a very different profile than we previously had. Unusual for a stage race it’s the ITT at stage 5 that seems to most likely decider this year, a 10.3 km mountain monster with average slopes at 7.6% and sections up to 10%. That said we will pass other hard climbs, and time can easily be lost both at the punchy summit finish at Champéry ski resort (stage 3) and the hard climbs near Sion (stage 4)
The locals will have their eyes on Thery Schir (Team UBS) the strongest Swiss in the peloton, born in Lausanne, capital in Romandy canton Vaud.
Other Swiss rider are Saggiorato, Freuler, Thiery, Mäder and Pellaud (Centovalli – Fiat), Delco (La Vie Claire), Dillier (Team UBS)
On paper there should only be one rider able to win this race Tenorio, as runner up with some distance Amador should also have a 95% secured 2nd spot on the podium, so you may say what is most interesting seen from outside is the fight for the last podium.
Last year’s winner Shikai, Intxausti, and Reis very even riders, between them good form or tactics will be the deciding factors.
Right beneath them Abal may have a lucky shot at the podium, on paper not that likely but with fantastic form at the mountain TT you never know.
Then we got a huge block of riders Carapaz, Roglic, Meintjes, Krasnoperov, Penasa, Duarte, Talansky, Chiarello, Suaza, Faglum Karlsson, Bennett, De la Cruz and Ranaweera
All in theory capable of finishing in low end top 10, but with bad form maybe just as likely to end close to 20st position, so it will be an exiting battel for ranking points between many fairly god climbers in this race.
This is my estimate of the strongest GC riders for this race:
| Rider | Mo | TT | Pr | Rs | Ac | Hi | Rc | Tenorio | 84 | 80 | 79 | 76 | 67 | 76 | 79 | Amador | 83 | 77 | 76 | 73 | 71 | 74 | 77 | Intxausti | 81 | 76 | 76 | 77 | 69 | 70 | 75 | Shikai | 81 | 76 | 76 | 76 | 66 | 71 | 78 | Reis | 81 | 76 | 76 | 76 | 63 | 73 | 78 | Abal | 80 | 76 | 76 | 76 | 72 | 69 | 74 | Carapaz | 80 | 72 | 72 | 76 | 65 | 71 | 77 | Roglic | 80 | 72 | 70 | 76 | 74 | 76 | 75 | Meintjes | 80 | 71 | 71 | 76 | 69 | 77 | 78 | Krasnoperov | 80 | 73 | 73 | 69 | 61 | 68 | 73 | Penasa | 80 | 70 | 70 | 72 | 76 | 74 | 77 | Duarte | 79 | 74 | 74 | 75 | 72 | 67 | 76 | Talansky | 79 | 72 | 72 | 76 | 69 | 77 | 77 | Chiarello | 79 | 73 | 71 | 74 | 72 | 75 | 77 | Suaza | 79 | 72 | 72 | 75 | 78 | 64 | 65 | Faglum Karlsson | 78 | 73 | 79 | 75 | 68 | 73 | 76 | Bennett | 80 | 65 | 65 | 74 | 73 | 76 | 79 | De la Cruz | 78 | 74 | 74 | 76 | 73 | 75 | 75 | Ranaweera | 78 | 74 | 73 | 75 | 65 | 73 | 74 | Garby | 79 | 68 | 68 | 76 | 70 | 70 | 75 | Costagli | 79 | 70 | 70 | 71 | 67 | 71 | 76 | Warbasse | 78 | 74 | 74 | 73 | 65 | 75 | 72 | Anacona | 79 | 66 | 66 | 72 | 61 | 74 | 74 | Fraile | 76 | 79 | 79 | 76 | 66 | 72 | 72 | Panayotov | 78 | 68 | 68 | 76 | 72 | 72 | 73 | Bartl | 77 | 71 | 75 | 74 | 70 | 72 | 75 | Schir | 77 | 72 | 72 | 72 | 65 | 72 | 74 | Stancu | 78 | 66 | 66 | 74 | 71 | 69 | 73 | Slagter | 78 | 66 | 66 | 73 | 71 | 79 | 74 | Kennaugh | 77 | 73 | 72 | 70 | 63 | 70 | 70 |

This can be a very important race for the team, where everything can go well or on the contrary everything can go wrong.
The TTT will undoubtedly undermine our ambitions for the overall classification.
Roglic would have a very good chance of fighting for a place in the top5 with the team that surrounds him and Silvestre should be able to fight for victory in stages 2 and 6.

Sending AKA here was a subprime option it sacrificed to get Appo into the Cheshire. Well, it won't matter either way since the max place my sprinters get is 10th.
Strong startlist means we're probably nothing for GC. With a bit of a balanced route, Warbasse could surprise again though. At least I hope. Some aggression from Garby would be nice too.

Intxausti has to deliver here, otherwise his ass goes back to Navarra. Sadly race crash prevented us from sending a strong TTT squad, hopefully wont be losing much time there

Not really looking forward to this race for multiple reasons: Reis and Duarte has been an awful partnership, there's that stupid hill stage which will undermine our chances and then there is the chance of us ruining everything in the final mountain stages.
Still a very contested and interesting field here in Switzerland so reports should be good. Thanks for the preview Tami!
Good luck everyone

Think we can do a solid or at least okay performance on all terrains in Romandie. That's certainly not been the case earlier this season |

Good start!!! Meintjes is yet again in with a good shot of achieving 3rd overall again in what is a pretty competitive field here at Romandie... maybe if we can manage a stage result as well that would be good!

It's a shame there is such a strong startlist as it will make it a lot harder to get a strong result in our home race.
Hopefully we can at least get a strong stage result or 2 along the way.
So far the TTT wasn't too bad and I'm glad we didn't drop Slagter, although a little surprised we dropped Ranaweera who is the better TT rider out of the 2.

This was a superb result. A much needed one. I thought we had a good TTT, but seeing the table I wasn't too confident on a good result.
Let's see what this means for the future.
Thanks for the report Tamijo!

Top half, not bad Really hoping for Bennett to do well here but a very tough field, will not put any expectations down yet

Decent TTT and shame that what could have been a 2nd place stolen by the breakaway. As long as Shikai still has a good race I wont be too upset though.

Ya - that was actually a perfect lead-out for Kragh Andersen, but Kragh exploded under the red kite while Ranneries kept going

Dammit that would have been such an awesome win for a Xero mainstay A real shame he went too early and couldn’t win the sprint but a nice ride to earn a day in the KOM jersey.
First of many battles up the front for Sosa and Pogacar I’m sure

Olala, love to see that Sosa win And also a real jackpot considering jerseys and points for now. Congratulations, viking90!
And yeah, cool to watch a Sosa vs. Pogacar battle already. Suspect there will be more of those in a couple of seasons time. |
