Stage 5
After two really tough days, we have ourselves a nice and simple flat stage. It’s an opportunity to recover and for the sprinters to claim a stage win after they’ve been already denied one by a breakaway on stage 2. As four major sprinters were OOT on stage 3, here’s an updated overview of the remaining top favorites for today:
SP AC FL RS SP AC FL RS Kragh Andersen80 77 77 74 Te Brake79 76 75 72 Kip80 82 69 63 Harrison78 81 72 70 Kupfernagel80 80 74 66 Roelandts79 77 73 71 Haller80 79 72 71 Bennett79 79 71 68
Te Brake, Kupfernagel and Kragh Andersen were the Top 3 in the bunch sprint on stage 2, but they all suffered a lot on the last two stages, Kupfernagel more than anyone.
Of those not mentioned here, Redecker was the best-placed in that sprint, 11th from the peloton and 16th on the stage, two places in front of Kuboki. Who’ll take the win today? Or can another breakaway spoil the sprinters‘ party?
The breakaway is relatively small, especially compared to recent stages. It consists of Dina, Selander and stage 1 winner Jerome Coppel. He’s obviously a premier rouleur, but it does seem a little surprising to see him expend this extra energy when he’s still got the concluding time trial as a major goal.
Both intermediate sprints go uncontested, as is to be expected. The gap to the peloton reached up to four minutes and is now down to just under three.
For the first half of the stage, a multitude of teams took turns at the front of the peloton. Now, it’s mostly Kraftwerk and Andorra, like we’ve seen on stage 2. They weren’t successful back then, they hope to do better now.
Dina got caught earlier, but Selander and Coppel still have about 20 seconds left. Berg Cycles have now joined the chase and it looks like they’re going to catch them.
But then desaster strikes for their captain Chiarello! He sufferes a puncture! The Brazilian is 9th overall – can he come back?
His teammates don’t seem to care. Bartl and Reguigui, with Kupfernagel on their wheel, are going so fast that they open a small gap to the rest of the peloton. But they have to – the leading duo are still in front.
They’re finally caught with just under 4 kilometres to go and we can expect a bit of a chaotic sprint to start soon. Kraftwerk on the right have built a decent looking train as have Andorra to their left. Kupfernagel finds himself at Kip’s wheel after his train dissolved.
Roelandts, Kuboki and Kragh Andersen are close behind him, Te Brake and Bennett follow the Carlsberg rider.
Redecker tries to get to the front on the bottom right side, while Harrison is further back.
Into the final three kilometres, Kupfernagel follows Vogt on the left side, Yates and Chavanne behind him.
Haller still has Park and Schädlich ahead of him on the right.
Kip between them is followed by Roelandts, Kuboki, Kragh Andersen, Bennett and Redecker. Te Brake is a little on his own on the right hand side.
Park and Jiang lead their captains onto the home stretch, but this might be a little early. Kupfernagel is now in Te Brake’s slipstream.
With the lead-outs gone, Kip leads in front of Haller and Roelandts.
Te Brake is very fast on the left hand side, as is Bennett more to the center of the road.
Kuboki tries to squeeze between the two leaders while Kupfernagel jumps from behind Te Brake!
Yates and Redecker are also very fast, as is Bennett still.
But Haller still has the lead with Kuboki directly behind him! Kip, Roelandts and Te Brake are slowing down, but everyone else is still in play for virtually any position!
In what has to be described as an upset win, Kuboki takes the stage! The line comes about 2 metres too late for Haller. Bennett completes the podium.
Yates passes Roelandts at the last second to take a strong fourth place. Kupfernagel and Redecker are next.
Chavanne, Kragh Andersen and Kip complete the Top 10 ahead of Te Brake.
Chiarello loses 3’15 and drops from 9 to 19 overall.
