Stage 5
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/HC/California/00.jpg

After two really tough days, we have ourselves a nice and simple flat stage. It’s an opportunity to recover and for the sprinters to claim a stage win after they’ve been already denied one by a breakaway on stage 2. As four major sprinters were OOT on stage 3, here’s an updated overview of the remaining top favorites for today:

SPACFLRSSPACFLRS

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/phi.png Te Brake, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/bgc.png Kupfernagel and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cdb.png Kragh Andersen were the Top 3 in the bunch sprint on stage 2, but they all suffered a lot on the last two stages, Kupfernagel more than anyone.

Of those not mentioned here, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/yor.png Redecker was the best-placed in that sprint, 11th from the peloton and 16th on the stage, two places in front of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/rak.png Kuboki. Who’ll take the win today? Or can another breakaway spoil the sprinters‘ party?

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/HC/California/E5/01.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/HC/California/E5/02.jpg

The breakaway is relatively small, especially compared to recent stages. It consists of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/emo.png Dina, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/min.png Selander and stage 1 winner pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cfe.png Jerome Coppel. He’s obviously a premier rouleur, but it does seem a little surprising to see him expend this extra energy when he’s still got the concluding time trial as a major goal.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/HC/California/E5/03.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/HC/California/E5/05.jpg

Both intermediate sprints go uncontested, as is to be expected. The gap to the peloton reached up to four minutes and is now down to just under three.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/HC/California/E5/06.jpg

For the first half of the stage, a multitude of teams took turns at the front of the peloton. Now, it’s mostly pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/kmm.png Kraftwerk and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/and.png Andorra, like we’ve seen on stage 2. They weren’t successful back then, they hope to do better now.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/HC/California/E5/07.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/HC/California/E5/08.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/emo.png Dina got caught earlier, but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/min.png Selander and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cfe.png Coppel still have about 20 seconds left. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/bgc.png Berg Cycles have now joined the chase and it looks like they’re going to catch them.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/HC/California/E5/09.jpg

But then desaster strikes for their captain pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/bgc.png Chiarello! He sufferes a puncture! The Brazilian is 9th overall – can he come back?

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/HC/California/E5/10.jpg

His teammates don’t seem to care. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/bgc.png Bartl and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/bgc.png Reguigui, with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/bgc.png Kupfernagel on their wheel, are going so fast that they open a small gap to the rest of the peloton. But they have to – the leading duo are still in front.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/HC/California/E5/11.jpg

They’re finally caught with just under 4 kilometres to go and we can expect a bit of a chaotic sprint to start soon. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/kmm.png Kraftwerk on the right have built a decent looking train as have pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/and.png Andorra to their left. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/bgc.png Kupfernagel finds himself at pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/and.png Kip’s wheel after his train dissolved.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/vlv.png Roelandts, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/rak.png Kuboki and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cdb.png Kragh Andersen are close behind him, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/phi.png Te Brake and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/gla.png Bennett follow the Carlsberg rider.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/yor.png Redecker tries to get to the front on the bottom right side, while pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/isa.png Harrison is further back.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/HC/California/E5/12.jpg

Into the final three kilometres, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/bgc.png Kupfernagel follows pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/bgc.png Vogt on the left side, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/des.png Yates and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/spr.png Chavanne behind him.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/kmm.png Haller still has pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/kmm.png Park and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/kmm.png Schädlich ahead of him on the right.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/and.png Kip between them is followed by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/vlv.png Roelandts, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/rak.png Kuboki, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cdb.png Kragh Andersen, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/gla.png Bennett and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/yor.png Redecker. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/phi.png Te Brake is a little on his own on the right hand side.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/HC/California/E5/13.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/kmm.png Park and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/and.png Jiang lead their captains onto the home stretch, but this might be a little early. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/bgc.png Kupfernagel is now in pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/phi.png Te Brake’s slipstream.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/HC/California/E5/14.jpg

With the lead-outs gone, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/and.png Kip leads in front of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/kmm.png Haller and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/vlv.png Roelandts.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/phi.png Te Brake is very fast on the left hand side, as is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/gla.png Bennett more to the center of the road.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/HC/California/E5/15.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/rak.png Kuboki tries to squeeze between the two leaders while pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/bgc.png Kupfernagel jumps from behind pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/phi.png Te Brake!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/des.png Yates and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/yor.png Redecker are also very fast, as is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/gla.png Bennett still.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/HC/California/E5/16.jpg

But pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/kmm.png Haller still has the lead with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/rak.png Kuboki directly behind him! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/and.png Kip, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/vlv.png Roelandts and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/phi.png Te Brake are slowing down, but everyone else is still in play for virtually any position!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/HC/California/E5/17.jpg

In what has to be described as an upset win, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/rak.png Kuboki takes the stage! The line comes about 2 metres too late for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/kmm.png Haller. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/gla.png Bennett completes the podium.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/HC/California/20.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/des.png Yates passes pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/vlv.png Roelandts at the last second to take a strong fourth place. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/bgc.png Kupfernagel and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/yor.png Redecker are next.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/HC/California/E5/18.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/spr.png Chavanne, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cdb.png Kragh Andersen and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/and.png Kip complete the Top 10 ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/phi.png Te Brake.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/HC/California/E5/19.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/bgc.png Chiarello loses 3’15 and drops from 9 to 19 overall.
