Race Report, Stage 5

The stage slipped through the sprinters’ fingers yesterday. On Stage 5 from El Jadida to Casablanca they will have another chance. This one is slightly longer at 177km but flatter. There are 3 sprint points and a Cat 4 KOM. Yesterday the large number of teams wanting to be in the breakaway combined with the small number of teams willing to work for a sprint meant the breakaway took it. We might see that again.

Nevertheless the sprinters are the stage favorites:

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/gzl.png Potts and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cad.png Koishi start the festivities

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Maroc/S5/01.jpg

But they are quickly followed by a stampede of riders and the peloton doesn’t like that so all of them are brought back. It looks like another brutal fight to be in the breakaway. A number of yesterday’s break, including winner pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cdb.png Vanspeybrouck are active in the fight again.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Maroc/S5/02.jpg

25km into the stage we appear to have got some clarity. We have 5 riders clear. In front it is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/xr0.png Areruya and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/t3a.png Robov. Just behind them pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cdb.png Vanspeybrouck pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cad.png Fiorelli and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/min.png Rosas. The pack is 1’39 behind them.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Maroc/S5/03.jpg

Two more of yesterday’s protagonists were active in trying to form the break, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/itd.png Nych and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/sct.png Seibeb, but neither made the selection.

There are no more fireworks and with 130km to ride the breakaway pass the first sprint point without contesting it. They have 3’50 over the peloton.

The lead maxed out at about 4 minutes and then the usual suspects began to work. With 113km to go they have the lead down to 3’21.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Maroc/S5/04.jpg

We are on to dirt roads as the break climbs toward the lone KOM point on this stage. The lead is 2’47 with 95k to ride.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Maroc/S5/05.jpg

None of the breakaway showed any interested in the KOM points. The breakaway also ignores the two sprint points and with 44km to go their lead is 1’48. The same teams are working but they have added more riders, the riders working are:
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ino.png Luchshenko
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ino.png De Souza
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fpc.png Turgis
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/tti.png Zakarin
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fpc.png Menten
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fpc.png Ssabagwanya

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Maroc/S5/06.jpg

With 20km to go and Casablanca looming in the distance the lead is down to 48 seconds. It doesn’t look like the break is going to take this one.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Maroc/S5/07.jpg

Just under 9k to go and the lead is still 28 seconds but the catch seems inevitable. The sprinters are gathering at the front of the peloton.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Maroc/S5/08.jpg

4.4 kms to go the break is still just out in front but the sprint trains are forming. On the left it is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/tti.png Zakarin, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/tti.png Foliforov and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/tti.png Samolenkov. On the right it is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ino.png Luchshenko. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ino.png Speirs and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ino.png Goss. The Indosat train is far stronger on paper. Wisely pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/isa.png Contreras is looking to catch that train. The other sprinters are a little further back but none are badly positioned.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Maroc/S5/09.jpg

2.7 km to go pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cdb.png Vanspeybrouck has launched one last desperate bid for a second consecutive stage win but his fate is already sealed. The trains are on the left the Indosat train with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/isa.png Contreras well placed and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/rpn.png Nizzolo a little further back. The Tinkoff train, now on the right, has reorganized and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/tti.png Samolenkov now has two better riders in front of him in pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/tti.png Vlasov and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/tti.png Kolesnikov. Behind them are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/gen.png De Buyst, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/mos.png Baska, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/yor.png Redecker, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/vlv.png Markus. On the far right pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fpc.png Yates is leading out pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fpc.png Van der Sande. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/kul.png Lavoine is a little further back in the very foreground of the picture.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Maroc/S5/10.jpg

1.6km to go each train has 1 lead out rider left as the break is finally swept up. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fpc.png Yates is leading but he is has been in the wind a long time. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fpc.png Van der Sande will likely hit the front too early again.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Maroc/S5/11.jpg

1 km banner. On the left pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ino.png Goss launches with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/isa.png Contreras and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/rpn.png Nizzolo behind him. On the right pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fpc.png Yates is done and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fpc.png Van der Sande has tried to drop behind the Tinkoff riders rather than launching prematurely. This has created a small gap from pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/gen.png De Buyst. De Buyst is following pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/tti.png Samolenkov who is just hitting the wind. Behind Van der Sande it is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/mos.png Baska, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/yor.png Redecker, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/vlv.png Markus. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/kul.png Lavoine is too far back and won’t win today.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Maroc/S5/12.jpg

600 meters and it is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/tti.png Samolenkov and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/rpn.png Nizzolo are leading. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ino.png Goss is fading, all he did was lead out the others. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/kul.png Lavoine has made up ground and could still get a high placing.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Maroc/S5/13.jpg

300 meters and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/tti.png Samolenkov has a clear lead but he has been in the wind a long time. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/isa.png Contreras on the far left is closest. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/rpn.png Nizzolo and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fpc.png Van der Sande have both faded.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Maroc/S5/14.jpg

100 meters and it is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/mos.png Baska, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/vlv.png Markus making the best speed in the center, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/tti.png Samolenkov looks like he is going to be caught.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Maroc/S5/15.jpg

Erik Baska takes it for Moser-Sygic.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Maroc/S5/16.jpg

It is a 4-way photo for second and the results come back: pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/vlv.png Markus, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/tti.png Samolenkov, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/yor.png Redecker then pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/isa.png Contreras.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Maroc/S5/17.jpg

6th to 10th go to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/gen.png De Buyst, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/kul.png Lavoine, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/rpn.png Nizzolo , pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ino.png Goss and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fpc.png Van der Sande.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Maroc/S5/18.jpg

There are no important time gaps and there are no changes in any of the jerseys. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/mos.png Baska is one point behind pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ebd.png Dombrowski in the points and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/isa.png Contreras is two points behind. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ebd.png Dombrowski would have lost the Green Jersey but he sprinted to 13th and those 3 points keep him in front. With 2 sprint and 2 climbing stages left that jersey could go either way.

Tomorrow we have our second mountain stage which is likely to be pivotal in the GC.
