Tour du Maroc
The stage slipped through the sprinters’ fingers yesterday. On Stage 5 from El Jadida to Casablanca they will have another chance. This one is slightly longer at 177km but flatter. There are 3 sprint points and a Cat 4 KOM. Yesterday the large number of teams wanting to be in the breakaway combined with the small number of teams willing to work for a sprint meant the breakaway took it. We might see that again.
Nevertheless the sprinters are the stage favorites:
Potts and Koishi start the festivities
But they are quickly followed by a stampede of riders and the peloton doesn’t like that so all of them are brought back. It looks like another brutal fight to be in the breakaway. A number of yesterday’s break, including winner Vanspeybrouck are active in the fight again.
25km into the stage we appear to have got some clarity. We have 5 riders clear. In front it is Areruya and Robov. Just behind them Vanspeybrouck Fiorelli and Rosas. The pack is 1’39 behind them.
Two more of yesterday’s protagonists were active in trying to form the break, Nych and Seibeb, but neither made the selection.
There are no more fireworks and with 130km to ride the breakaway pass the first sprint point without contesting it. They have 3’50 over the peloton.
The lead maxed out at about 4 minutes and then the usual suspects began to work. With 113km to go they have the lead down to 3’21.
We are on to dirt roads as the break climbs toward the lone KOM point on this stage. The lead is 2’47 with 95k to ride.
None of the breakaway showed any interested in the KOM points. The breakaway also ignores the two sprint points and with 44km to go their lead is 1’48. The same teams are working but they have added more riders, the riders working are:
Luchshenko
De Souza
Turgis
Zakarin
Menten
Ssabagwanya
With 20km to go and Casablanca looming in the distance the lead is down to 48 seconds. It doesn’t look like the break is going to take this one.
Just under 9k to go and the lead is still 28 seconds but the catch seems inevitable. The sprinters are gathering at the front of the peloton.
4.4 kms to go the break is still just out in front but the sprint trains are forming. On the left it is Zakarin, Foliforov and Samolenkov. On the right it is Luchshenko. Speirs and Goss. The Indosat train is far stronger on paper. Wisely Contreras is looking to catch that train. The other sprinters are a little further back but none are badly positioned.
2.7 km to go Vanspeybrouck has launched one last desperate bid for a second consecutive stage win but his fate is already sealed. The trains are on the left the Indosat train with Contreras well placed and Nizzolo a little further back. The Tinkoff train, now on the right, has reorganized and Samolenkov now has two better riders in front of him in Vlasov and Kolesnikov. Behind them are De Buyst, Baska, Redecker, and Markus. On the far right Yates is leading out Van der Sande. Lavoine is a little further back in the very foreground of the picture.
1.6km to go each train has 1 lead out rider left as the break is finally swept up. Yates is leading but he is has been in the wind a long time. Van der Sande will likely hit the front too early again.
1 km banner. On the left Goss launches with Contreras and Nizzolo behind him. On the right Yates is done and Van der Sande has tried to drop behind the Tinkoff riders rather than launching prematurely. This has created a small gap from De Buyst. De Buyst is following Samolenkov who is just hitting the wind. Behind Van der Sande it is Baska, Redecker, and Markus. Lavoine is too far back and won’t win today.
600 meters and it is Samolenkov and Nizzolo are leading. Goss is fading, all he did was lead out the others. Lavoine has made up ground and could still get a high placing.
300 meters and Samolenkov has a clear lead but he has been in the wind a long time. Contreras on the far left is closest. Nizzolo and Van der Sande have both faded.
100 meters and it is Baska, and Markus making the best speed in the center, Samolenkov looks like he is going to be caught.
Erik Baska takes it for Moser-Sygic.
It is a 4-way photo for second and the results come back: Markus, Samolenkov, Redecker then Contreras.
6th to 10th go to De Buyst, Lavoine, Nizzolo , Goss and Van der Sande.
There are no important time gaps and there are no changes in any of the jerseys. Baska is one point behind Dombrowski in the points and Contreras is two points behind. Dombrowski would have lost the Green Jersey but he sprinted to 13th and those 3 points keep him in front. With 2 sprint and 2 climbing stages left that jersey could go either way.
Tomorrow we have our second mountain stage which is likely to be pivotal in the GC.
