Vuelta a Espana
Stage 4: Cullera - El Puig 177.2 km
Welcome to Cullera, located on the banks of the Júcar River and next to the Mediterranean Sea. The stage today be the last option for the sprinters for some time, with some very hard profiles in the coming days. The route contains just one hill The Puerto del Oronet otherwise very flat with a long uncomplicated finish in El Puig de Santa Maria, a village about 15 km north of Valencia.
We got high temperature at 29°C, and a bright sunny day. Winds from 3 to 7 km/h
Lawless first to attack at his wheel Lecourt De Billot.
Soon to follow Hamilton with Vink and Vliegen
These two groups unite quickly, and get a gap of 1’36 after 7 km on the road. Then another acceleration from the peloton Madouas and Owen
Darbinyan, Guerreiro, Tolhoek and Van Niekerk working in the peloton setting a hard pace for 20 km, but then the pack settle down and when Madouas and Owen join the original breakaway after another 10 km the distance is 2’00”.
In the breakaway, Podium Ambition very strong representation with three riders, Vliegen most interesting 11 in GC just 35”. Owen should be a good help as he is on paper the fastest in the break on the flat and at the same time best rider in KoM 5th with 12 points. Lawless doomed to be acting as domestic in the break today.
Vink 9th in KoM with 6 points. The others have no KoM points and will most likely focus on the stage win, as the are all far back in GC.
Lawless calling for the car to get supplies for the teammates
The breakaway holds a gap of 3’25 after about 57 km, but the pack speed up, and the breakaway has just 2’40 when they approach the first point sprint, with 80 km left.
Up to this point is has mainly been Darbinyan, Guerreiro and Tolhoek sharing the workload.
Podium Ambition set of a sprint train and delivers Vliegen perfectly to win the points sprint and bonus seconds.
Vliegen moves to 4th in points standings.
The pack does not come much closer on the next 20 km leading up to the Puerto del Oronet climb the breakaway start the 14 km climb with 2’28”
Vliegen work hard on the climb to keep as mush distance as possible almost single handed pulling towards the top.
Seemingly a bit desperate Hamilton opens the KoM sprint very early, and cannot shake of the competitors, it is Vink taking the KoM in front of Vliegen and Owen.
Very strange decision from Vliegen in this situation not to let his teammate take the KoM points, maybe pay-back from the fact that Owen did not work on the climb.
They pass the Top with 2’04, 45 km left.
Owen is strong downhill and takes the lead in the breakaway.
In the pack Gilanipoor punches over the top and the result is a split.
Race leader Plucinski and sprinter Ackermann amongst the victims.
Lammertink, Gilanipoor, Kuznetsov, Darbinyan, Rathe and Sirironnachai keeps the pressure up and cut down the gap little by little on the downhill.
The breakaway reaches the final 24 km of flat road with just 53”.
Under the 20 km banner Hamilton attack from the breakaway
Hamilton get a gap but with an acceleration from Madouas and Lecourt De Billot we got a trio leading.
As they are about to reach the “1 km left to the sprint” sign Lecourt De Billot with a counter attack.
Vliegen wins the sprint for 2nd over the points sprint, harvesting additional bonus seconds.
Lecourt De Billot got 9”, the bunch additional 38” behind, with 17.8 km left.
Sirironnachai, Vermeltfoort, Per, Guerreiro finish the hunt, catching the breakaway with a little less than 10 km left.
From here we see SPAR leading with first Brändle and later Brändle, Hsu, and Azman side by side.
But this is unusual compared to what we usual see, as they are not making a paceline and only travels with 34 km/h.
Many of the top sprinter close to the front Bertilsson, Kump, Martinelli, Guerao, Grosu, cathering in the middle of the road, it is silence before the storm.
2.5 km left
1.5 km left.
The only change is that Per is now in front of the middle group with Bertilsson and Martinelli
Whereas Grosu, Guerao and Kump have moved left to a group behind Barta
At the right side the mentioned SPAR riders have fallen a bit back, behind two Aker and Isostar domestics, the pace has dropped to 31 km/h. Any not mentioned sprinter is somewhere in the larger group of riders pressed together behind the three “spearheads” probably doing everything to move forward.
Then with 1.1 km left explosion! A carefully planned attack from three SPAR riders, acceleration out from 3 different positions at the same time. Far right Hsu, in the middle Azman and from the left side Guerao
The best placed riders behind them is Grosu far left, about 3 meters in front of the pack, Bertilsson left/center about a meter behind Grosu, and Afewerki, Martinelli, Kump all about 2 meters behind Bertilsson in first row of the left side pack.
800 meters left, Hsu leads at the right side, about 3 meters in front of Guerao.
In third position Grosu coming fast out of the pack, but still at least 6 meters behind Guerao.
Azman burned up fast, not getting much distance to the pack.
500 meters left, Hsu leads but now Guerao is coming very fast and will overtake very soon.
Also Grosu very fast and has reduced the gap to Guerao to about 4 meters.
Further back also Bertilsson have laid some distance to the pack.
Martinelli with Kump at wheel also gained momentum though they are still just in front of the pack, in Kump’s slipstream Stepniak
300 meters left,
Guerao (68 km/h) leads still with a good gap to Grosu (70 km/h), a little bit in front of Grosu at the right side Hsu but he is much slower now (41 km/h)
Bertilsson first in the larger group some 4-5 meters behind Grosu (70 km/h), behind him closing in very fast Martinelli (74 km/h) and Kump (75 km/h).
At the right on par with Kump it is Pruus surprisingly fast (68 km/h)
100 meters left,
Guerao (67 km/h) still on front, although Grosu (69 km/h) is getting closer.
Bertilsson 3rd but lost some momentum now (69 km/h)
Right behind him on a line from right to left, Hsu completely stalled (37 km/h), Kump (73 km/h), Martinelli (70 km/h).
Next row between Hsu and Kump, Pruus (66 km/h) left, and Kolesnikov right (72 km/h) and a few more meters down to left to right, Walsleben (59 km/h), Rybalkin (67 km/h), Taaramäe (65 km/h), Novikov (66 km/h) and Stepniak (72 km/h)
Seems like the strange tactic from SPAR - Siam Cement completely spoiled the sprint for many better sprinters with Nizzolo, Kemboi and Afewerki completely invisible today.
Guerao wins in El Puig, his first podium of the grand tour, in front of Grosu taking his 2nd podium.
Bertilsson 3rd with his first podium of the tour, in front of Kump 4th, Martinelli 5th and Kolesnikov 6th.
Pruus 7th and Stepniak 8th.
Novikov 9th and McKenna round of top 10.
The GC is still unchanged with Leszek Plucinski from Fablok in front of Ioannis Spanopoulos, Team Puma and Sven Fritsch, EA Vesuvio
Eduard Grosu – eBuddy take the point lead, while Aidan Van Niekerk – Festina still lead the KoM.
Sven Fritsch - EA Vesuvio keep the U23 lead, and Team Puma the team classification.
