Stage 4: Cullera - El Puig 177.2 km

Welcome to Cullera, located on the banks of the Júcar River and next to the Mediterranean Sea. The stage today be the last option for the sprinters for some time, with some very hard profiles in the coming days. The route contains just one hill The Puerto del Oronet otherwise very flat with a long uncomplicated finish in El Puig de Santa Maria, a village about 15 km north of Valencia.

We got high temperature at 29°C, and a bright sunny day. Winds from 3 to 7 km/h

The Race

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/GTM/Vuelta/S4/02.jpg

Soon to follow pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/bnm.png Hamilton with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/grm.png Vink and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/t3a.png Vliegen

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/GTM/Vuelta/S4/03.jpg

These two groups unite quickly, and get a gap of 1’36 after 7 km on the road. Then another acceleration from the peloton pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/pum.png Madouas and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/t3a.png Owen

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/GTM/Vuelta/S4/04.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ssc.png Darbinyan, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/iso.png Guerreiro, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ebd.png Tolhoek and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fes.png Van Niekerk working in the peloton setting a hard pace for 20 km, but then the pack settle down and when pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/pum.png Madouas and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/t3a.png Owen join the original breakaway after another 10 km the distance is 2’00”.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/GTM/Vuelta/S4/05.jpg

In the breakaway, Podium Ambition very strong representation with three riders, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/t3a.png Vliegen most interesting 11 in GC just 35”. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/t3a.png Owen should be a good help as he is on paper the fastest in the break on the flat and at the same time best rider in KoM 5th with 12 points. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/t3a.png Lawless doomed to be acting as domestic in the break today.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/grm.png Vink 9th in KoM with 6 points. The others have no KoM points and will most likely focus on the stage win, as the are all far back in GC.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/t3a.png Lawless calling for the car to get supplies for the teammates

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/GTM/Vuelta/S4/06.jpg

The breakaway holds a gap of 3’25 after about 57 km, but the pack speed up, and the breakaway has just 2’40 when they approach the first point sprint, with 80 km left.
Up to this point is has mainly been pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ssc.png Darbinyan, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/iso.png Guerreiro and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ebd.png Tolhoek sharing the workload.

Podium Ambition set of a sprint train and delivers pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/t3a.png Vliegen perfectly to win the points sprint and bonus seconds.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/t3a.png Vliegen moves to 4th in points standings.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/GTM/Vuelta/S4/07.jpg

The pack does not come much closer on the next 20 km leading up to the Puerto del Oronet climb the breakaway start the 14 km climb with 2’28”

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/t3a.png Vliegen work hard on the climb to keep as mush distance as possible almost single handed pulling towards the top.

Seemingly a bit desperate pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/bnm.png Hamilton opens the KoM sprint very early, and cannot shake of the competitors, it is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/grm.png Vink taking the KoM in front of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/t3a.png Vliegen and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/t3a.png Owen.

Very strange decision from Vliegen in this situation not to let his teammate take the KoM points, maybe pay-back from the fact that pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/t3a.png Owen did not work on the climb.

They pass the Top with 2’04, 45 km left.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/GTM/Vuelta/S4/08.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/t3a.png Owen is strong downhill and takes the lead in the breakaway.

In the pack pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/iso.png Gilanipoor punches over the top and the result is a split.

Race leader pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fab.png Plucinski and sprinter pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fes.png Ackermann amongst the victims.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/GTM/Vuelta/S4/09.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ebd.png Lammertink, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/iso.png Gilanipoor, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/iso.png Kuznetsov, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ssc.png Darbinyan, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ssc.png Rathe and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ssc.png Sirironnachai keeps the pressure up and cut down the gap little by little on the downhill.

The breakaway reaches the final 24 km of flat road with just 53”.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/GTM/Vuelta/S4/10.jpg

Under the 20 km banner pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/bnm.png Hamilton attack from the breakaway

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/GTM/Vuelta/S4/11.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/bnm.png Hamilton get a gap but with an acceleration from pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/pum.png Madouas and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/tmo.png Lecourt De Billot we got a trio leading.

As they are about to reach the “1 km left to the sprint” sign pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/tmo.png Lecourt De Billot with a counter attack.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/GTM/Vuelta/S4/12.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/t3a.png Vliegen wins the sprint for 2nd over the points sprint, harvesting additional bonus seconds.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/tmo.png Lecourt De Billot got 9”, the bunch additional 38” behind, with 17.8 km left.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/GTM/Vuelta/S4/13.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ssc.png Sirironnachai, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ebd.png Vermeltfoort, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/iso.png Per, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/iso.png Guerreiro finish the hunt, catching the breakaway with a little less than 10 km left.

From here we see SPAR leading with first pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ssc.png Brändle and later pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ssc.png Brändle, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ssc.png Hsu, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ssc.png Azman side by side.

But this is unusual compared to what we usual see, as they are not making a paceline and only travels with 34 km/h.

Many of the top sprinter close to the front pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/grm.png Bertilsson, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/iso.png Kump, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/gen.png Martinelli, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ssc.png Guerao, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ebd.png Grosu, cathering in the middle of the road, it is silence before the storm.

2.5 km left

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/GTM/Vuelta/S4/14.jpg

1.5 km left.
The only change is that pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/iso.png Per is now in front of the middle group with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/grm.png Bertilsson and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/gen.png Martinelli

Whereas pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ebd.png Grosu, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ssc.png Guerao and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/iso.png Kump have moved left to a group behind pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/des.png Barta

At the right side the mentioned SPAR riders have fallen a bit back, behind two Aker and Isostar domestics, the pace has dropped to 31 km/h. Any not mentioned sprinter is somewhere in the larger group of riders pressed together behind the three “spearheads” probably doing everything to move forward.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/GTM/Vuelta/S4/15.jpg

Then with 1.1 km left explosion! A carefully planned attack from three SPAR riders, acceleration out from 3 different positions at the same time. Far right pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ssc.png Hsu, in the middle pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ssc.png Azman and from the left side pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ssc.png Guerao

The best placed riders behind them is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ebd.png Grosu far left, about 3 meters in front of the pack, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/grm.png Bertilsson left/center about a meter behind Grosu, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/eav.png Afewerki, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/gen.png Martinelli, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/iso.png Kump all about 2 meters behind Bertilsson in first row of the left side pack.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/GTM/Vuelta/S4/16.jpg

800 meters left, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ssc.png Hsu leads at the right side, about 3 meters in front of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ssc.png Guerao.

In third position pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ebd.png Grosu coming fast out of the pack, but still at least 6 meters behind Guerao.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ssc.png Azman burned up fast, not getting much distance to the pack.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/GTM/Vuelta/S4/17.jpg

500 meters left, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ssc.png Hsu leads but now pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ssc.png Guerao is coming very fast and will overtake very soon.

Also pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ebd.png Grosu very fast and has reduced the gap to Guerao to about 4 meters.

Further back also pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/grm.png Bertilsson have laid some distance to the pack.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/gen.png Martinelli with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/iso.png Kump at wheel also gained momentum though they are still just in front of the pack, in Kump’s slipstream pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fab.png Stepniak

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/GTM/Vuelta/S4/18.jpg

300 meters left,
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ssc.png Guerao (68 km/h) leads still with a good gap to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ebd.png Grosu (70 km/h), a little bit in front of Grosu at the right side pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ssc.png Hsu but he is much slower now (41 km/h)

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/grm.png Bertilsson first in the larger group some 4-5 meters behind Grosu (70 km/h), behind him closing in very fast pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/gen.png Martinelli (74 km/h) and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/iso.png Kump (75 km/h).

At the right on par with Kump it is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/akm.png Pruus surprisingly fast (68 km/h)

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/GTM/Vuelta/S4/19.jpg

100 meters left,
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ssc.png Guerao (67 km/h) still on front, although pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ebd.png Grosu (69 km/h) is getting closer.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/grm.png Bertilsson 3rd but lost some momentum now (69 km/h)

Right behind him on a line from right to left, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ssc.png Hsu completely stalled (37 km/h), pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/iso.png Kump (73 km/h), pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/gen.png Martinelli (70 km/h).

Next row between Hsu and Kump, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/akm.png Pruus (66 km/h) left, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/tti.png Kolesnikov right (72 km/h) and a few more meters down to left to right, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/akm.png Walsleben (59 km/h), pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/tti.png Rybalkin (67 km/h), pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/akm.png Taaramäe (65 km/h), pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/tti.png Novikov (66 km/h) and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fab.png Stepniak (72 km/h)

Seems like the strange tactic from SPAR - Siam Cement completely spoiled the sprint for many better sprinters with Nizzolo, Kemboi and Afewerki completely invisible today.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/GTM/Vuelta/S4/20.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ssc.png Guerao wins in El Puig, his first podium of the grand tour, in front of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ebd.png Grosu taking his 2nd podium.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/grm.png Bertilsson 3rd with his first podium of the tour, in front of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/iso.png Kump 4th, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/gen.png Martinelli 5th and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/tti.png Kolesnikov 6th.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/GTM/Vuelta/S4/22.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/akm.png Pruus 7th and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fab.png Stepniak 8th.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/GTM/Vuelta/S4/23.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/tti.png Novikov 9th and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/mos.png McKenna round of top 10.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/GTM/Vuelta/S4/24.jpg

The GC is still unchanged with Leszek Plucinski from Fablok in front of Ioannis Spanopoulos, Team Puma and Sven Fritsch, EA Vesuvio

Eduard Grosu – eBuddy take the point lead, while Aidan Van Niekerk – Festina still lead the KoM.

Sven Fritsch - EA Vesuvio keep the U23 lead, and Team Puma the team classification.
