Tour of the Battenkill Preview
The difficult yearly hilly cobbled race in the United States of America is upon us once again. This is the 8th running of the now permanent feature of the MG calendar. The race was run as a CT event last season, but received a big promotion and will be run as a PTHC event this time. The race will be run on a 200+ km route featuring one and three-quarter traversal of a circuit, finishing on a cobbled uphill.
Cobbles specialists remain the favourites for this race, but some hill-climbing ability will be useful to do well in this race. Last year's winner Sam Bewley is back to defend his crown. Two time former winner Jerome Baugnies is back as well. It remains to be seen if either of them can add to their past glory in this race or will we see a new winner this time?
| FLA | HIL | RES | COB | SPR | ACC | Bewley | 78 | 71 | 76 | 83 | 83 | 83 | Vanspeybrouck | 76 | 71 | 71 | 82 | 67 | 69 | Wisniowski | 80 | 71 | 76 | 81 | 73 | 76 | Altur | 75 | 70 | 70 | 81 | 72 | 68 | Zepuntke | 72 | 69 | 72 | 81 | 72 | 65 | Stallaert | 77 | 67 | 68 | 81 | 79 | 76 | Teunissen | 76 | 66 | 73 | 81 | 67 | 69 | Theuns | 72 | 74 | 73 | 80 | 77 | 76 | Van Avermaet | 76 | 74 | 72 | 80 | 76 | 75 | Baugnies | 78 | 72 | 73 | 80 | 65 | 73 | Vanmarcke | 76 | 66 | 72 | 80 | 70 | 72 |
Sam Bewley starts as top favourite for every cobbled race that he attends, and its no different in this one. Possessing better cobbles ability than anyone else on the startlist, the New Zealand legend is quite capable of hills and excellent on flat roads.
In terms of cobbled ability, Vanspeybrouck is his closest competitor, but the Carlsberg leader lacks a bit in the support stats as well. His team will be hoping for a good show as they are looking to keep their heads above the relegation cut-off at this late stage of the season.
Wisnioski is perhaps the heir to the cobbles throne with the impending decline of the above duo, and he has already shown flashes of his greatness this season. The Polish upstart will be hoping to pull off another of his great rides in his search to win another cobbled event.
Another up-and-coming rider stands in contention for the podium in a race like this. Altur has had a quiet season overall, but he has been very consistent in pulling out results. He will be hoping to turn that into a more spectacular result in this race.
More seasoned verterans, Zepuntke and Stallaert, as always, remain in contention for a podium finish. Both do lack a little on the hills compared to their competitors highlighted so far.
Two riders who do not have any problems going over hills are Theuns and Van Avermaet. The Generali rider has had an excellent season, and will look to consolidate further with a good result here. The aging Van Avermaet didn't have the best starts to the season, but has seen an improvement in form and fortune in recent races. Both these riders should be good shouts for a possible Top 5 finish.
Two-time champion Baugnies is quite low on the favourites' list but the Belgian has made a name for himself in overcoming stronger opponents on paper.
Another declining Northern Classics rider rounds out our favourites list in Vanmarcke. The Repsol rider will be looking towards securing a Top 10 place or better.
| FLA | HIL | RES | COB | SPR | ACC | Sulimov | 73 | 70 | 71 | 79 | 65 | 71 | Ferreira | 73 | 68 | 70 | 79 | 71 | 69 | Fenn | 72 | 61 | 71 | 79 | 70 | 69 | Gerts | 77 | 78 | 80 | 78 | 72 | 70 | Ringheim | 72 | 67 | 71 | 78 | 73 | 75 | Lampaert | 75 | 66 | 73 | 78 | 60 | 61 | Thomas | 74 | 59 | 69 | 78 | 73 | 77 | Taillefour | 77 | 57 | 70 | 78 | 54 | 55 |
Tinkoff will be hoping Sulimov can do better than his outsider tag in the absence of Senechal.
Ferreira has done well so far this season, but anything better than a Top 10 looks tough for him in this race.
Floris Gerts has the best puncher skills among the favourites and outsiders, but his slightly weaker cobbled ability might see him having a hard time keeping up with the favourites on the twenty-one cobbled sectors in this race.
All the others mentioned in the above table are good cobbles riders, but share an average to poor capability on the hills.

No mention of Debesay, even against 50s HI Taillefour and Thomas? Hope we can prove you wrong but the cobbled classics have been a real weak point for us this season, but if there was a profile for Debesay to turn it around it would be here (even if it's in the toughest field he's faced) - Top 10 would be solid enough for me but on his form this year even that might be asking too much.
24/02/21 - kandesbunzler said “I don't drink famous people."
15/08/22 - SotD said "Your [jandal's] humour is overrated"
11/06/24 - knockout said "Winning is fine I guess. Truth be told this felt completely unimportant."

Last cobbled race of the year for Vanspeybrouck. He's done quite well consistently this year, so I'm hoping for a good showing here. PTHC means this will be especially hard against PT competition, but it could also mean a lot more points if we place highly enough. We'll just have to see. It's all out from us, that's for sure.
Thanks for the great preview!

Went more with the COB as main stat when picking favourites, going by historical results. But that was previous PCM editions as well, so let's see how it goes...

If the hill stat is important Teunissen probably has a problem. Let's hope it's not.

Decided to send Wisniowski here, hoping he could take advantage of being one of the best cobblers in the hills. We are always going for the podium with Wisniowski and hopefully he can continue his amazing season here

The cobbled clash made things difficult for us, and hence ISA had a weak team here, with hopes for a more lenient startlist for Rheden and better suited in terms of hills (fingers crossed). Van der Velde in one of his last races before probable retirement demonstrates why he has had a long MG career by ensuring not a zero-pointer, while the rest fell away even earlier in proceedings.
Quelle surprise, Bewley delivers for Moser yet again. His legend as a MG-monster will live long. Theuns and Wisi-man continue to position themselves as potential heirs to the cobbled throne, more/wider competition looks likely in future years than this current generation has experienced. Thanks to our reporter.

A top 5 is good from VSB, though since he still looked strong at the end, I wish he had followed the moves a bit better and maybe gotten on the podium. Still, it's a decent haul of points, if not one that's going to be a difference maker for us with relegation. It should at least help us keep pace.
Thanks for a great report Abhishek!

Easily Teunissens worst cobble performance of the year, but it doesn't come as a surprise that those hills hurt him. I guess I should be happy he even managed to salvage 14th.
Grieg, Moser and Generali were the three PT topscorers of the previous period and they fill the podium here. Clearly the teams in form.
Well done Abhishek

Nothing to do about Bewley! Third place is another brilliant result for Wisniowski. Happy with his performance and also quite good from Ringheim. Grøndahl Jansen also with possibly his best result on the cobbles. Nice ride from Theuns as well. The last 10k really suited his skills, so cool to see him finishing second.
