Stage 5
There’s still tomorrow’s hilly stage and the concluding time trial to shake up the GC, but today is the race’s only true mountain top finish. That being said, the climb that the riders have to conquer three times today (with the final ascent being a bit longer towards the finish) isn’t all that steep. The difficulty, and with it the amount and size of time gaps, will be determined by how the riders approach the race. We will get a new GC leader though, as Kadri is not expected to keep up in any scenario.
Garcia Cortina is the first to attack with Maillet and Yechezkel following.
Serry in the mountain jersey, which he wears for overall leader Kadri, is in a second group, trying to make his way to the front to take the jersey actually for himself.
Eventually, the two groups unite and form the breakaway of the day. In addition to the four mentioned above, we have Budenieks, Nolf, Ivanov, Sinkeldam, Mutsumine, Errazkin and Soler. So three teams have two riders respectively in this group of 11.
Errazkin takes the first mountain sprint ahead of Garcia Cortina and Maillet. Serry was the only rider not doing any work, just sitting at the back of the group, and he doesn’t get to the front quickly enough as everyone started to sprint. He’s only four points behind in the KoM classification, so odds are he’ll pick them up at some point along the way.
Not at the second mountain sprint either though. Same situation as before. Ivanov takes the points. None of the riders in this break except for Serry had any meaningful points in the classification, but tomorrow has a lot of points to offer as well so this could be the foundation for a bid then.
A few riders had problems on the climbs, but while Mutsumine and Yechezkel made it back to the group quickly, Errazkin has to leave a gap of more than a minute. He eventually reconnects, too, but it was a tough road back in this nasty weather. Ahead of the two intermediate sprints, the group has 5’30 on the peloton.
No one sprints for points or seconds at the intermediate sprints. The positions they pass through are:
1. Nolf
2. Ivanov
3. Yechezkel
1. Nolf
2. Maillet
3. Ivanov
Yechezkel is the first to drop as the escapees hit the Strbskie Pleso for the first time. Mutsumine follows shortly after.
Towards the summit, Serry finally takes the initiative. He attacks!
He takes the maximum points at the top to finally take the lead in the KoM classification. His attack caused a split behind him. Surprisingly, it’s Garcia Cortina with Sinkeldam ahead of the remaining six riders. Meanwhile, Serry’s lead to the peloton is down to 2’30.
Nolf and Budenieks dropped in the final metres of the climb and would soon be swept by the peloton. The other seven got back together on the descent, but their advance is shrinking, too.
A surprising victim of the first climb in the peloton: Pantano Gomez. There was no visible reason for it like a puncture, he just dropped and is already three minutes behind the peloton. Duolingo’s Hiratsuka is also in a group just behind him.
As the peloton is getting closer, Ivanov and Serry increase the pace in an effort to get to the next KoM sprint.
And they do. The peloton almost caught up, but Ivanov crosses the line first ahead of Errazkin and Serry, who now has a pretty significant lead in the mountain classification:
66 riders enter the final climb together, all escapees have been caught. Kadri is still there as are all the other top favorites. Lammertink sets the pace with two Kraftwerk riders behind him.
I said the riders would determine how selective this race would be. One who wants the answer to be „very“ is Kudus, who attacks from 7 kilometres out. Lecuisinier and Roglic try to follow.
The attack didn’t go anywhere, though. And now we’re already into the final 2,5 kilometres and nothing happened except that the group is down to 54 riders. Many of the top favorites are getting into position for what might just be a bunch sprint up the climb. Lecuisinier, Kudus, Keinath (behind Eiking) and Roglic (behind Destribois) are in the first row, Koretzky and Chamorro behind them as Wellens moves to the front on the left.
Under the flamme rouge, Chamorro leads with Ignatenko behind him as Benoot brings Wellens in good position. Kadri is still there, could he prove me wrong and hold on for yellow for another day?
600 meters left. Kirsch on the far left and Keinath come to the front as does Lecuisinier on the far right with Galta in his slipstream. Trofimov and Kudus are the quickest in the second row currently.
It’s a bit of a snail race towards the finish. Lecuisinier is ever so slightly in the lead but Kirsch and Roglic seem to be a bit faster. Kadri is slowing down now and has to be careful not to leave a gap!
Lecuisinier is still in the lead but Wellens now charges to the front! Galta also tries to make a move but he’s a bit blocked.
But Lecuisinier holds on! He takes the stage ahead of Kudus, who had a good finishing punch, and Wellens. Roglic and Kirsch are next.
Brambilla just edges out Galta for sixth, Keinath is eigth ahead of Trofimov and Teklehaimanot.
Kadri makes the absolute most out of what has to be a yellow jersey boost and manages to stay with this group. He gets to wear the jersey for another day!
Just behind him, the first small gap opens. Slagter leads this group, and he’s the biggest surprise to fall behind. He loses only 22 seconds and tomorrow should suit him, but with his lack of time trialing skills, every second lost on a finish like this is one too many.
A few riders of note: Trofimov finished high and as one of the best puncheurs and with decent time trialing skills, he has a great shot at a good GC position. The same applies at least as much, if not more, for Hagen. Lutsenko is a worse time trialer, so he has to make the most out of tomorrow.
Cataford also survived in the first group today. Tomorrow will be another challenge, but he’s one of the best time trialists here. Gidich and Bevin lost only 22 seconds, they are possibly the riders considered pre-race to be the longest shots who now have the chance for a really good GC position.
