Stage 5
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Pologne/E5/00.jpg

There’s still tomorrow’s hilly stage and the concluding time trial to shake up the GC, but today is the race’s only true mountain top finish. That being said, the climb that the riders have to conquer three times today (with the final ascent being a bit longer towards the finish) isn’t all that steep. The difficulty, and with it the amount and size of time gaps, will be determined by how the riders approach the race. We will get a new GC leader though, as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cad.png Kadri is not expected to keep up in any scenario.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Pologne/E5/01.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Pologne/E5/02.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/itd.png Garcia Cortina is the first to attack with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/kmm.png Maillet and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/des.png Yechezkel following.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Pologne/E5/03.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/rak.png Serry in the mountain jersey, which he wears for overall leader pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cad.png Kadri, is in a second group, trying to make his way to the front to take the jersey actually for himself.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Pologne/E5/04.jpg

Eventually, the two groups unite and form the breakaway of the day. In addition to the four mentioned above, we have pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ssc.png Budenieks, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cfe.png Nolf, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/min.png Ivanov, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cdb.png Sinkeldam, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/rak.png Mutsumine, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/des.png Errazkin and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/itd.png Soler. So three teams have two riders respectively in this group of 11.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Pologne/E5/05.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/des.png Errazkin takes the first mountain sprint ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/itd.png Garcia Cortina and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/kmm.png Maillet. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/rak.png Serry was the only rider not doing any work, just sitting at the back of the group, and he doesn’t get to the front quickly enough as everyone started to sprint. He’s only four points behind in the KoM classification, so odds are he’ll pick them up at some point along the way.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Pologne/E5/06.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Pologne/E5/07.jpg

Not at the second mountain sprint either though. Same situation as before. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/min.png Ivanov takes the points. None of the riders in this break except for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/rak.png Serry had any meaningful points in the classification, but tomorrow has a lot of points to offer as well so this could be the foundation for a bid then.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Pologne/E5/08.jpg

A few riders had problems on the climbs, but while pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/rak.png Mutsumine and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/des.png Yechezkel made it back to the group quickly, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/des.png Errazkin has to leave a gap of more than a minute. He eventually reconnects, too, but it was a tough road back in this nasty weather. Ahead of the two intermediate sprints, the group has 5’30 on the peloton.

No one sprints for points or seconds at the intermediate sprints. The positions they pass through are:

1. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cfe.png Nolf
2. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/min.png Ivanov
3. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/des.png Yechezkel

1. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cfe.png Nolf
2. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/kmm.png Maillet
3. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/min.png Ivanov

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Pologne/E5/09.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Pologne/E5/10.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/des.png Yechezkel is the first to drop as the escapees hit the Strbskie Pleso for the first time. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/rak.png Mutsumine follows shortly after.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Pologne/E5/11.jpg

Towards the summit, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/rak.png Serry finally takes the initiative. He attacks!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Pologne/E5/12.jpg

He takes the maximum points at the top to finally take the lead in the KoM classification. His attack caused a split behind him. Surprisingly, it’s pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/itd.png Garcia Cortina with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cdb.png Sinkeldam ahead of the remaining six riders. Meanwhile, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/rak.png Serry’s lead to the peloton is down to 2’30.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Pologne/E5/13.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cfe.png Nolf and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ssc.png Budenieks dropped in the final metres of the climb and would soon be swept by the peloton. The other seven got back together on the descent, but their advance is shrinking, too.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Pologne/E5/14.jpg

A surprising victim of the first climb in the peloton: pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/and.png Pantano Gomez. There was no visible reason for it like a puncture, he just dropped and is already three minutes behind the peloton. Duolingo’s pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/duo.png Hiratsuka is also in a group just behind him.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Pologne/E5/15.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Pologne/E5/16.jpg

As the peloton is getting closer, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/min.png Ivanov and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/rak.png Serry increase the pace in an effort to get to the next KoM sprint.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Pologne/E5/17.jpg

And they do. The peloton almost caught up, but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/min.png Ivanov crosses the line first ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/des.png Errazkin and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/rak.png Serry, who now has a pretty significant lead in the mountain classification:

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Pologne/E5/18.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Pologne/E5/19.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Pologne/E5/20.jpg

66 riders enter the final climb together, all escapees have been caught. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cad.png Kadri is still there as are all the other top favorites. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ebd.png Lammertink sets the pace with two pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/kmm.png Kraftwerk riders behind him.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Pologne/E5/21.jpg

I said the riders would determine how selective this race would be. One who wants the answer to be „very“ is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/rpn.png Kudus, who attacks from 7 kilometres out. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fes.png Lecuisinier and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/bgc.png Roglic try to follow.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Pologne/E5/22.jpg

The attack didn’t go anywhere, though. And now we’re already into the final 2,5 kilometres and nothing happened except that the group is down to 54 riders. Many of the top favorites are getting into position for what might just be a bunch sprint up the climb. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fes.png Lecuisinier, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/rpn.png Kudus, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/aeg.png Keinath (behind pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/aeg.png Eiking) and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/bgc.png Roglic (behind pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/bgc.png Destribois) are in the first row, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fes.png Koretzky and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cfe.png Chamorro behind them as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fab.png Wellens moves to the front on the left.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Pologne/E5/23.jpg

Under the flamme rouge, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cfe.png Chamorro leads with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cfe.png Ignatenko behind him as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fab.png Benoot brings pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fab.png Wellens in good position. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cad.png Kadri is still there, could he prove me wrong and hold on for yellow for another day?

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Pologne/E5/24.jpg

600 meters left. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/eav.png Kirsch on the far left and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/aeg.png Keinath come to the front as does pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fes.png Lecuisinier on the far right with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/akm.png Galta in his slipstream. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/duo.png Trofimov and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/rpn.png Kudus are the quickest in the second row currently.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Pologne/E5/25.jpg

It’s a bit of a snail race towards the finish. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fes.png Lecuisinier is ever so slightly in the lead but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/eav.png Kirsch and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/bgc.png Roglic seem to be a bit faster. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cad.png Kadri is slowing down now and has to be careful not to leave a gap!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Pologne/E5/26.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fes.png Lecuisinier is still in the lead but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fab.png Wellens now charges to the front! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/akm.png Galta also tries to make a move but he’s a bit blocked.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Pologne/E5/27.jpg

But pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fes.png Lecuisinier holds on! He takes the stage ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/rpn.png Kudus, who had a good finishing punch, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fab.png Wellens. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/bgc.png Roglic and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/eav.png Kirsch are next.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Pologne/E5/28.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ebd.png Brambilla just edges out pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/akm.png Galta for sixth, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/aeg.png Keinath is eigth ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/duo.png Trofimov and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/kmm.png Teklehaimanot.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Pologne/E5/29.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cad.png Kadri makes the absolute most out of what has to be a yellow jersey boost and manages to stay with this group. He gets to wear the jersey for another day!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Pologne/E5/30.jpg

Just behind him, the first small gap opens. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/spr.png Slagter leads this group, and he’s the biggest surprise to fall behind. He loses only 22 seconds and tomorrow should suit him, but with his lack of time trialing skills, every second lost on a finish like this is one too many.

A few riders of note: pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/duo.png Trofimov finished high and as one of the best puncheurs and with decent time trialing skills, he has a great shot at a good GC position. The same applies at least as much, if not more, for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/afk.png Hagen. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ssc.png Lutsenko is a worse time trialer, so he has to make the most out of tomorrow.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/t3a.png Cataford also survived in the first group today. Tomorrow will be another challenge, but he’s one of the best time trialists here. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ssc.png Gidich and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/pum.png Bevin lost only 22 seconds, they are possibly the riders considered pre-race to be the longest shots who now have the chance for a really good GC position.
