Race Report, Stage 2

Stage 2 of the Tour of Norway sees the peloton travel 149 km from Oslo to Drammen, a sprint finish seems likely but 28km winds at the start suggest the possibility of echelons. Two sprints and one category 4 mountain prime will be on offer.

Soon after the start the first attack goes, it is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cad.png Matsumoto wearing white, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/mos.png Polnicky, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/vlv.png Haugard, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/sct.png Poljanec and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fpc.png Atkins

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Norway/S2/01.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/vvg.png Gautier counters, interesting to see the Valio-Viking Genetics GC leader on the move.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Norway/S2/02.jpg

In the peloton eBuddy not happy with the breakaway and giving chase

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Norway/S2/03.jpg

But with 135 km to gp eBuddy relent and a tired Gautier bridges uo to create a 6-man break. With 126 km to go and 5km to the mountain sprint the break has 2:25.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Norway/S2/04.jpg

Just like yesterday pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cad.png Matsumoto leads out the mountain sprint.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Norway/S2/05.jpg

But no pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cad.png Pichon to finish it for him today. He is passed by the other riders, except pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/vlv.png Haugard who isn’t playing.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Norway/S2/06.jpg

At the line pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/vvg.png Gautier takes first. The order is:
1. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/vvg.png Gautier (+5 = 5)
2. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/mos.png Polnicky (+3 = 3)
3. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/sct.png Poljanec (+1 = 1)

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Norway/S2/07.jpg

But the GC teams aren’t interested in letting pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/vvg.png Gautier get away, or maybe they are worried by the winds, which are sometimes up to 33 km/hour. With 109 km to go the lead is down to 2:21 and shrinking.

Chasing are ISA-Hexacta, Generali, Gazzelle, Desigual and Iberia – Degenkolb. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/itd.png Gougeard burning some early matches for the favorite’s team. Others working are:
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/isa.png Rodriguez Galindo
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/des.png Nazaret
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/gen.png Ghyselinck
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/gen.png Sterbini
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/gzl.png Senyenov

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Norway/S2/08.jpg

At the first sprint pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cad.png Matsumoto goes early again.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Norway/S2/09.jpg

He holds and the order is:
1. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cad.png Matsumoto
2. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/vvg.png Gautier
3. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/sct.png Poljanec

The pack crosses the sprint with the GC teams still working and the lead holding at just over 2 minutes. 75 km to go .

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Norway/S2/10.jpg

With the sprint over the break’s advantaged is steadily eroded and another attack by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cad.png Matsumoto just delays the inevitable. With 58km to go the break is over. Also the wind has died down.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Norway/S2/11.jpg

With pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/vvg.png Gautier back in the pack the sprint teams take over, with UBS and Fablok riders doing most of the work, including:
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fab.png Eliad
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ubs.png Müller
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fab.png Rumac
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fab.png Kalf
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ubs.png Schäppi
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ubs.png Badilatti

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Norway/S2/12.jpg

Soon thereafter Podium Ambition joins in.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Norway/S2/13.jpg

With 30 km to go the second intermediate sprint attracts the attention of some of the sprinters, from left to right, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/mos.png Soupe, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/tti.png Samolenkov, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/isa.png Contreras and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fpc.png Van der Sande. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cdb.png Appollonio is just behind them.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Norway/S2/14.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fpc.png Van der Sande takes it assuring himself another day in yellow. Order is:
1. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fpc.png Van der Sande
2. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/isa.png Contreras
3. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/mos.png Soupe

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Norway/S2/15.jpg

For a short while Indosat decides to try and break things up with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ino.png Van Avermaet, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/isa.png Sepulveda for ISA-Hexacta is also active.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Norway/S2/16.jpg

But by 15 km Podium Ambition is back on the front of a calmer peloton with UBS and Fablok still active.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Norway/S2/17.jpg

With 4km to go Podium Ambition are still in control. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/t3a.png Alaphilippe and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/t3a.png Keukeleire are near pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/t3a.png Ewan but have not started a lead out. The other big sprinters are near the front but fighting with GC guys for position.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Norway/S2/18.jpg

2.7 km to and we have lead-out trains. On the far right pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fab.png Rumac, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fab.png Guardini and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fab.png Ponzi with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cdb.png Appollonio behind them. To their left pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/t3a.png Alaphilippe, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/t3a.png Keukeleire and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/t3a.png Ewan.

To their left the ill-equipped UBS squad has formed a lead out, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ubs.png Fuchs, perhaps the worst lead out rider ever, followed by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ubs.png Schäppi and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ubs.png Reinhardt, wearing green. On his wheel pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/min.png Vantomme, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/isa.png Contreras and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fpc.png Van der Sande. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/kul.png Tewelde and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ino.png Goss, in between the UBS and Podium Ambition trains.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Norway/S2/19.jpg

With 1.8 km to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/t3a.png Alaphilippe has turned it over to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/t3a.png Keukeleire. Fablok are less organized as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fab.png Guardini and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fab.png Ponzi were in the wrong order.

On the left pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ubs.png Schäppi doing a surprisingly good lead-out for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ubs.png Reinhardt now with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/min.png Vantomme and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ino.png Goss behind him. In the center it is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cdb.png Appollonio, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/kul.png Tewelde pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/isa.png Contreras and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fpc.png Van der Sande looking for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fab.png Guardini’s wheel.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Norway/S2/20.jpg

With 0.9 km to go pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/t3a.png Ewan powers off pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/t3a.png Keukeleire’s wheel. On the right pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fab.png Guardini has found pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fab.png Ponzi’s slipstream. The others behind now. From left to right: pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/min.png Vantomme, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ino.png Goss, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ubs.png Reinhardt, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/kul.png Tewelde and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cdb.png Appollonio. Behind are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fpc.png Van der Sande and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/isa.png Contreras with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ubs.png Schäppi fading back now. The Yellow Jersey has a lot to do and the rest are out of it.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Norway/S2/21.jpg

And pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/t3a.png Caleb Ewan takes stage 2 of the Tour of Norway after a textbook lead-out from his team. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/t3a.png Keukeleire celebrates a job well done.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Norway/S2/18a.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fab.png Guardini takes second ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ubs.png Reinhardt, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ino.png Goss and a fast finishing pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fpc.png Van der Sande.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Norway/S2/22.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/min.png Vantomme beats pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/isa.png Contreras for 6th with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fab.png Ponzi 8th and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/kul.png Tewelde 9th.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Norway/S2/23.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cdb.png Appollonio hangs on for 10th ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/t3a.png Keukeleire who was busy celebrating.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Norway/S2/24.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/mos.png Soupe leads in the rest of the pack on the same time.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fpc.png Tosh Van der Sande still has both the GC and points lead while pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/t3a.png Ewan takes over the Young Riders Classification. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cad.png Pichon keeps the Mountains Jersey and Xero Racing take over the Team Competition lead.
