Stage 8
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/Other/Avenir/S8/P.jpg

The penultimate stage of the Tour de l’Avenir is a flat one, a day of respite ahead of tomorrow’s tough finale. It comes with a small twist, though: The final few kilometers are on roads that turn slightly upwards. Not very steep, mind you, but at around 2-3%. As an additional wrench, there’s a short descent around 2 kilometers from the finish.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/Other/Avenir/S8/01.jpg

As has been the case every day so far, many riders are eager to join the break. A first sixtett consists of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/spr.png Putti, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/trg.png Larsen, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/sct.png Christodoulos, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/vlv.png Eriksson, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cdb.png Foss and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/bnz.png Yates - a few familiar faces and some newcomers in terms of breakaways.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/Other/Avenir/S8/02.jpg

However, their time ahead of the peloton is over quickly. Former leader of the mountain classification pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/bnz.png Reddish goes next, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cdb.png Forsby leads a few riders trying to follow him.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/Other/Avenir/S8/03.jpg

But the peloton is chasing down every attempt down like crazy. You can see it here: pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/itd.png Taminiaux attacks with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fpc.png van den Berg, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/trg.png Larsen and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/spr.png Olei but half a dozen riders are out of the saddle at the front of the pack - not attacking, just trying really hard to bring them back immediately.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/Other/Avenir/S8/04.jpg

First pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/lpu.png Lierse, then pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/spr.png Sauber and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cdb.png Carlsberg are the driving forces of this weird spectacle, at times even creating small gaps to the peloton with a few of their domestiques. A revolving cast of riders try their luck, but as of more than 40 kilometers into the race, no group has persisted yet.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/Other/Avenir/S8/05.jpg

A few kilometers later though, more by accident it seems, two of the pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/spr.png Sauber riders get some significant seperation at the exact moment the pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cdb.png Carlsberg armada finally tires. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/spr.png Putti is now around a minute ahead of the peloton and, behind his teammate pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/spr.png Hibatullah, in pursuit of a four-men group up front.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/Other/Avenir/S8/06.jpg

Said group consists of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/aeg.png Kurianov, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/phi.png Malecki, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/itd.png Paasschens and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cad.png Yamamoto. All of them are really solid rouleurs, so if any group could have a chance to make it today, it might be this one.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/Other/Avenir/S8/07.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/Other/Avenir/S8/08.jpg

But the peloton doesn’t seem inclined to allow that today. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cen.png Centovalli, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/duo.png Duolingo, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fes.png Festina and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ahe.png Adastra share the work and make sure the gap never exceeds three minutes so far.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/Other/Avenir/S8/09.jpg

After a long, long chase, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/spr.png Hibatullah is finally within striking distance of the breakaway, maybe just five or six seconds behind, when the hammer seems to hit, and he has to slow down. The gap starts to grow again. His teammate pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/spr.png Putti is also still in the middle of nowhere.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/Other/Avenir/S8/10.jpg

The escapees couldn’t care less about the intermediate sprint, neither the points nor the general classification are of interest for any of the four. They only hope to keep the peloton at bay.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/Other/Avenir/S8/11.jpg

The same teams are still at the front when the pack swallows first pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/spr.png Putti and a little later pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/spr.png Hibatullah. The distance to the breakaway is slowly coming down, currently at two and a half minutes with over 60 kilometers to go on this beautiful sunny day.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/Other/Avenir/S8/12.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/Other/Avenir/S8/13.jpg

Nothing of note happened in the following 40 kilometers. At around 18 kilometers to go, the gap drops below a minute for the first time, the peloton now being led almost exclusively by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cen.png Centovalli - seems like pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cen.png Cullaigh has some good legs today.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/Other/Avenir/S8/14.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/phi.png Malecki goes on the first obligatory late escapee attack, trying to prolong his time in the spotlight a little bit.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/Other/Avenir/S8/15.jpg

But he doesn’t get very far on his own. Under the 10 kilometers banner, they’re just under half a minute ahead. A catch seems inevitable, but the earlier the better for the sprinters. Stage 4 winner pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/duo.png Ivo Oliveira has joined the chase at the head of the peloton now.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/Other/Avenir/S8/16.jpg

But the breakaway holds on admirably. The road slowly turns upwards - well, if you want to call 1-2% “upwards” - and the sprinters try to get into position, all bunched together on the right here. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fes.png Kalaba (# 1) has pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/itd.png Philipsen (186), pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/duo.png Hsu (11) and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/vlv.png Halvorsen (71) to his right, previous stage winners pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/itd.png Hodeg (184) and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/zal.png Ovsyannikov (138) just ahead and behind them, respectively. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cen.png Cullaigh, although not in this picture, is close by while pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/eue.png Jakobsen is a good bit further behind, struggling to move up.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/Other/Avenir/S8/17.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cen.png Mäder makes the final push to bring the escapees back, but with only 3.4 kilometers to go, the sprint trains better form quickly.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/Other/Avenir/S8/18.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cen.png Cullaigh makes a big effort to catch up to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cen.png Mäder, but this seems way too early to be this close to the front. We’ll see, though, as this shapes up to be a very chaotic sprint.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/itd.png Hodeg follows him, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/duo.png Hsu has pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/duo.png Affini ahead of him on the right side of the road and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/zal.png Ovsyannikov is also still in the vacinity, but other than that, most sprinters seem to be caught off-guard by the sudden burst of the Centovalli guys. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fes.png Kalaba is boxed in some 30 positions further behind, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/vlv.png Halvorsen and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/eue.png Jakobsen are also badly positioned.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/Other/Avenir/S8/19.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cen.png Cullaigh realized his approach wasn’t going to work and instead swung over to follow pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/duo.png Hsu. But the pace dropped quite a bit, which allowed a few sprinters to catch up. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cad.png Moschetti is now directly behind pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/itd.png Hodeg with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/pum.png Steimle, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/vlv.png Halvorsen, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/xr0.png Huynh and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/bnz.png Mudgway close by. Still no sign of either pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fes.png Kalaba or pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/eue.png Jakobsen.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/Other/Avenir/S8/20.jpg

Just under the flamme rouge, the pace picks up again. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/duo.png Rui Oliveira now leads pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/duo.png Hsu and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cen.png Cullaigh, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/zal.png Ovsyannikov goes into the wind by himself early, not the first time we’ve seen this - and to quite some success previously.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cad.png Moschetti and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/itd.png Hodeg are still the other closest sprinters but on the left side of the screen, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fes.png Veber tries his best to bring pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fes.png Kalaba back into contention.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/Other/Avenir/S8/21.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/duo.png Hsu and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cen.png Cullaigh struggle to accelerate a little after pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/duo.png Oliveira drops out of the lead. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/zal.png Ovsyannikov is actually still the fastest here, possibly on pace for another stage win? pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/itd.png Hodeg is right by his side.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/Other/Avenir/S8/22.jpg

Wow, but as soon as he finds his gear, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/duo.png Hsu is off and gone! With a big burst, he takes the lead. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cen.png Cullaigh can’t keep up, maybe paying the price for that earlier acceleration, and is now overtaken by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fes.png Kalaba on the right.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cad.png Moschetti is fading a bit in the middle of the road, but to his left, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/pum.png Steimle is on pace for his first strong result here with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/vlv.png Halvorsen in his wheel.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/Other/Avenir/S8/23.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/duo.png Hsu will not be stopped today, he timed it perfectly after pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/duo.png Oliveira’s leadout. But the fight for second and third is still very open! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/pum.png Steimle, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/vlv.png Halvorsen and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fes.png Kalaba are very fast, going past pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/zal.png Ovsyannikov and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/itd.png Hodeg with ease.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/Other/Avenir/S8/24.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/vlv.png Halvorsen decisively moves into second pace as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/duo.png Hsu crosses the line victorious. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/pum.png Steimle still has a small advantage on pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fes.png Kalaba but it’s going to be close! Behind them a surging pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/sct.png Rajovic tries to break into the Top 5.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/Other/Avenir/S8/25.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/pum.png Steimle holds off pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fes.png Kalaba just long enough to take third without the need of a photo finish. What a strong performance by the German. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/zal.png Ovsyannikov continues his string of good performances with another fifth place ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/itd.png Hodeg and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/sct.png Rajovic.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/Other/Avenir/S8/26.jpg

Behind pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cad.png Moschetti, it’s pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/xr0.png Areruya finishing ninth. With those points, he actually moves into tied second place in the points classification. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cen.png Cullaigh messed up the final 3 kilometers pretty badly, once more he isn’t able to reward his teammates for their hard work. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/bnz.png Mudgway concludes the first wave of sprinters, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/eue.png Banaszek and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/aeg.png Ferri lead the rest of the peloton.

The sprinters are done for the race now, only one stage remains and it's the toughest yet. Four long climbs will decide the GC race, so we can expect a lot of action - see you tomorrow!
