Tour of Romandie

Stage 4: Sion - Sion 153.1 km

Welcome to the 4nd stage in the Tour of Romandie, with departure and finish in Sion.
The route moves first into the mountains at the west side of the Rhône river valley, for the early brutal 8.9 kilometres climb at 9.4% up to spa center Ovronnaz. Then Down in the vally and north up to Chalais, where we again start climbing into the mountains now at the east side of the valley, Vercorin (9.6 km 8.1%), Nax 6.6 km at 6.1 %, Suen 5.7 km at 5.2% and then the last and longest climb Les Collons 13.1 km at 6.5% before we are heading downhill towards the finish line.

A well-planned attack in the last climb, can really change the GC leaderboard significantly.

18°C and sunny and not a lot of wind, highest windspeeds up to 6 km/h.

The pack is at 9’07 when they make it to the top.

Only pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ahe.png Battaglin, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cen.png Masnada, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/zal.png Reus, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ahe.png Ricco, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cen.png Signorini and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cdb.png Warbasse makes it over the top together, but most of the others comes back on the downhill or the long flat sector leading up to the next KoM. Only pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ubs.png Dillier was reeled in and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/sct.png Christodoulos sits somewhere between the break and the pack.

As expected, the pack have been quite fast on the flat reducing the gap to 5’01”

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cdb.png Warbasse is leading in the breakaway on the first 4.5 km of the Vercorin climb, then pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cen.png Masnada takes over.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C1/Romand/S4/07.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cen.png Signorini did not get away, and the counter comes from pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/zal.png Reus with 1.4 km to the top, he immediately gets an 8” gap and takes the Cat.1.

The pack lost time on the last part of the climb, led by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ubs.png Ramos Ticona they passed at 5’40”

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ahe.png Battaglin takes responsibility leading the way up to Nax (cat.2), rather optimistic also opening an early sprint. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cen.png Masnada with a good kick from 700 meters takes the KoM. In front of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cdb.png Warbasse, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ahe.png Ricco and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/zal.png Reus.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C1/Romand/S4/11.jpg

The pack passes in 5’13”

A very short downhill and we are climbing up to Suen (Cat 2), this time the breakaway split up over the last top and the downhill, so only 7 riders start the climb together.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ahe.png Battaglin, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ahe.png Ricco, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cdb.png Warbasse, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cen.png Masnada, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cen.png Signorini, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/spr.png Ahmad Zamri and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/zal.png Reus

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cdb.png Warbasse and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cen.png Masnada fight for position, but from the back pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ahe.png Battaglin comes with great speed and takes the KoM in last minute, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cen.png Masnada 2nd enough to keep the overall lead, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cen.png Signorini 3rd and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ahe.png Ricco 4th.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C1/Romand/S4/13.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C1/Romand/S4/14.jpg

The pack has been relative fast over this climb passing in 3’49”

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/spr.png Ahmad Zamri was dropped over the climb and he will not get back.

From here we get a high pace pursuit downhill and on the flat section leading up to the 13.1 km Les Collons (cat.1) the last climb today.

Some notable riders have been dropped in the process, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/vlv.png Anacona, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/eur.png Atapuma, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/eur.png De la Cruz, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/rak.png Iino, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/p4e.png Krasnoperov, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/vlv.png Ludvigsson, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cen.png Manfredi, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/p4e.png Padun, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/eur.png Parra Bustamente, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cen.png Saggiorato, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/spr.png Slagter, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/emo.png Stancu .

The distance is 3’25 to a pack of 46 riders, another 48” to group pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/vlv.png Anacona with all the riders mentioned above.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C1/Romand/S4/15.jpg

With 6.2 km to the top the distance has further crumbled, now just 1’56. Meanwhile the pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/vlv.png Anacona group is falling further back now almost 2 minutes behind the favorites.

More and more riders are dropping from the pack, just 33 riders left including some of the dropped rider from the breakaway.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C1/Romand/S4/16.jpg

Up front it is now pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cdb.png Warbasse burning calories to keep the gap open, he actually does quite well.
Now just 2.0 km to the top and still a gap of 1’36”.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/C1/Romand/S4/17.jpg

The peloton is now reduced to 22 riders, 1’45” behind the leading riders.
Time to take a look at who we got left and the order of the riders.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cdb.png Warbasse is on fire, not only has he kept the distance to the pack, but with two hard short accelerations also dropped first pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ahe.png Ricco and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/zal.png Reus and lately also pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ahe.png Battaglin and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cen.png Signorini
