Hola! A tough day for the Spanish riders, as their National Road Race Championships is also their National Climbing Championships. This scared Madrazo so much that he didn't want to participate. A walkover for Tenorio then?
Some amateurs tried to get in the breakaway but their climbing ability is the reason they don't have a professional contract. Halfway up the big climb and the lead group is reduced to 30, with all favorites there. Desigual and Repsol sharing leading duties between Errazkin and Rodriguez.
There are no attacks until the final five kilometer, when Tenorio finally attacks. His main rival Marquez sticks to his wheel, with Serrano responding as well. The other 21 riders stick together.
The trio reaches the final kilometer with a 15 second lead, Lastra and Iturra leading the chase to get them back. Tenorio taking the shorter but steeper inside turn to get ahead of his rivals.
The group has caught up again. Tenorio leading the sprint but Lastra and Minguez Ayala are right behind him. Watch out for De la Cruz and Fraile coming from their slipstream. Marquez and Serrano are at danger of being passed by them.
But Justo Tenorio finds the right gear and wins! Marquez takes second after all with Fraile completing the party for Desigual. Fellow Spanish team Repsol takes fourth and fifth with Serrano and Herrada. Minguez Ayala sixth, Lastra seventh, De la Cruz only eighth, Iturra ninth and Rienda Segura finishing tenth as best amateur.
Tenorio is the reigning Spanish Time Trial champion and has the chance to take the double this season.
Verona sets the benchmark at one hour, three minutes and forty seconds.
Fraile had to conquer the rain in his final few kilometers, but it does not stop him from beating his teammates time by a minute and three seconds.
Izagirre has a total off-day, two minutes down on Fraile and even falling behind Herrada.
Gonzalez Salas is the only rider Tenorio might be afraid of. He is seven seconds faster than Fraile at the halfway mark, and at the finish line he beats the best time by fourteen seconds.
Tenorio then in his red-yellow jersey, but after the first part it becomes clear he will not prolong it. Seventeen seconds is the gap to Salas at the first checkpoint, and would finish behind Fraile in third at 45 seconds. At least he can wear the same jersey in the road stages next season.
But he has to share credit of Spanish Champion with Mario Gonzalez Salas!
