Race Report

Stage 1 of the Tour of Norway sees the peloton travel 188 km of relatively flat terrain. Two sprints and two category 4 mountain primes will be on offer.

Soon after the flag goes down the first attack goes, it is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cad.png Matsumoto followed by, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/kul.png Grippo, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cad.png Pichon and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/vlv.png Tiller

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Norway/S1/100.jpg

Those 4 get a gap, more attacks follow but only pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ebd.png Lampaert is able to get away.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Norway/S1/002.jpg

Next pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fpc.png McCarthy, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/vlv.png Eriksson, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/grm.png Moulingui have a go but they are shut down.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Norway/S1/003.jpg

Then, with 170 km to go it is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cad.png Rocchetti, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fpc.png McCarthy and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/sct.png Pibernik attacking. But pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/t3a.png Quaade shuts them down for Podium Ambition.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Norway/S1/004.jpg

No more attacks and we have our break of the day. With 150 km to we get the first sprint. The Campari duo lead from the front and the order is:
1. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cad.png Matsumoto
2. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cad.png Pichon
3. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/kul.png Grippo
4. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/vlv.png Tiller
At the sprint pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ebd.png Lampaert is still 18 seconds behind the 4 leaders.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Norway/S1/005.jpg

With 132 km to go the lead is just below 4 minutes and the work is being done by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/t3a.png Quaade, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fab.png Eliad and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ubs.png Badilatti

With 116 km to and 1 km to the summit of the first KOM pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cad.png Matsumoto attacks and the other riders follow.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Norway/S1/006.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/vlv.png Tiller counters but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cad.png Pichon comes around him. Good teamwork from Campari. The order is:
1. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cad.png Pichon (5)
2. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/vlv.png Tiller (3)
3. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/kul.png Grippo (1)

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Norway/S1/007.jpg

The pack crosses the KOM 4:29 behind. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/t3a.png Postlberger is now working with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fab.png Eliad and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ubs.png Badilatti.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Norway/S1/008.jpg

With 100km to go the lead is down to 3 minutes under pressure from those same 3 riders. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/itd.png Izagirre is up front and well protected by this team.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Norway/S1/009.jpg

With 75 km to go the lead is down to 2:40 and the 3 chasing teams have added riders including, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ubs.png Müller, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fab.png Kalf and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ubs.png Schäppi.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Norway/S1/010.jpg

With 50 km to go the same teams are chasing and the lead is reduced to 1.:52. Lead out men pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/t3a.png Alaphilippe and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/t3a.png Keukeleire are up front for Podium Ambition now.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Norway/S1/011.jpg

The second sprint point sees the Campari riders again open the sprint and take the top points. The order is:
1. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cad.png Matsumoto
2. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cad.png Pichon
3. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/kul.png Grippo
4. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/vlv.png Tiller

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Norway/S1/012.jpg

With 40 km to go the pack cross the sprint 1:40 behind, the Podium Ambition lead out men no longer involved. At 34 km Fablok have really upped the pace and there is a brief split in the pack. Carlsberg riders quickly drop back to help as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cdb.png Appollonio has missed the split. Only other major rider caught behind is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/mos.png Sagan.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Norway/S1/015.jpg

The pack reforms and 31 km to go pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cad.png Matsumoto attacks for the KOM points.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Norway/S1/016.jpg

Again he successfully sets up his teammate and on the line it is:
1. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cad.png Pichon (+5 = 10)
2. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/kul.png Grippo (+3 = 4)
3. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cad.png Matsumoto (+1 = 1)

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Norway/S1/017.jpg

With 25 km to go the same teams are chasing and they have the lead down to 1:32. 18 km to go and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cad.png Matsumoto decides it is time to shake things up and attacks the break.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Norway/S1/018.jpg

By 10 km pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cad.png Matsumoto has been brought back but the pack is only 20 seconds behind.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Norway/S1/019.jpg

A group of 29 has been dropped which includes lead out men pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/t3a.png Keukeleire, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cdb.png Kvist and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/min.png Avila as well as sprinters pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/yor.png Rowe, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/vvg.png Vanderaerden and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/tti.png Van Heerden. This group won’t make it back.

With 5.8 km to go pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/t3a.png Cataford closes down the break.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Norway/S1/020.jpg

Three km to go and the peloton has hesitated, riders are spread across the road, from left to right: pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/t3a.png Cataford pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fab.png Jallays, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fab.png Rumac, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/t3a.png Ewan, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fab.png Guardini, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fab.png Ponzi and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/t3a.png Alaphilippe.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Norway/S1/021.jpg

2 km and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fab.png Ponzi opens the lead out for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fab.png Guardini. A train forms behind:

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Norway/S1/022.jpg

In order:
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fab.png Ponzi
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fab.png Guardini
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cdb.png Appollonio

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ino.png Goss
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/isa.png Contreras
This group has a gap over the rest of the field.

With 1.1 km to go pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fab.png Ponzi peels off, time will tell if his efforts in the lead out hurt his GC chances.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Norway/S1/023.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/PTHC/Norway/S1/025.jpg

As they come to the line it is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fpc.png Van der Sande on the far left and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ubs.png Reinhardt on the right.
