Stage 4
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/HC/California/E4/00.jpg

Yesterday’s stage proved to be more of a mountain than a hill stage but the pure puncheurs might get a better shot today – at least in the eye of the bookies, who have them as favorites. And there is less climbing today than there was yesterday, just one Cat-1 climb and one Cat-2 in contrast to two and three, respectively. Still, that Cat-1 climb does look pretty tough.

In addition to the riders mentioned yesterday, oddsmakers favor these specialists:

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/eur.png Zaini8066657081

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cfe.png Ben Nasser7868697667

Let’s see if one of them makes it or if the GC favorites will duel this out among one another.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/HC/California/E4/01.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/HC/California/E4/02.jpg

Once again, we had an incredibly hectic opening part of the stage. At one point, there were 29 riders ahead of the peloton, including some prominent riders like pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/spr.png Slagter, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cfe.png Klemme, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/rak.png Serry and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cdb.png Juul-Jensen.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/HC/California/E4/03.jpg

Also an important name: pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/itd.png Jakub Kratochvila. He was in the breakaway yesterday and trails pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/rak.png Rolland by just 14 points in the mountain classification. He brings that down to 8 at the first mountain sprint.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/HC/California/E4/04.jpg

There’s 25 riders in the group ahead of the peloton, which isn’t just going to let that big of a breakaway go. It’s a tough chase, the pace is high in both groups.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/HC/California/E4/05.jpg

Which already has a few victims. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/bgc.png Kupfernagel is alone off the back of the peloton, already some five minutes down. He’ll have a really tough battle against the time limit – we could see another big sprinter not making it to the sprint stage.

And maybe not just one. There’s another group three minutes behind the peloton that includes pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/and.png Kip, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/gla.png Bennett and also pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/kmm.png Schädlich and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/vvg.png Kittel, who’re among the favorites for the concluding time trial.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/HC/California/E4/06.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/sct.png Petrovski, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/spr.png Hirschi and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/itd.png Soler lead the escapees through the intermediate sprint. The peloton is 45 seconds behind them as we’re getting closer to the first combination of climbs.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/HC/California/E4/07.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/HC/California/E4/08.jpg

The peloton couldn’t catch the escapees on the flat and on the ascents, the 25 riders splintered into different groups. Six of them are at the front as they cross the Category 2 mountain sprint. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/rak.png Rolland is there, he takes second place as his breakaway companion from yesterday, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cfe.png Klemme, just outsprints him. The other riders in the group are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cdb.png Juul-Jensen, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/itd.png Kratochvila and the Minions duo of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/min.png Ivanov and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/min.png Haga.

A number of riders are close behind with a trio of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/spr.png Slagter, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/gla.png McConvey and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/sct.png Seibeb about to catch up. The leaders now have more than three minutes on the peloton.

Meanwhile, several groups that include pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/bgc.png Vogt, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/and.png Barrio, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/eur.png Zaini, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/rak.png Froome and more are dropped from the peloton. Once more it seems that only a good hill stat and nothing else won’t do you much good today.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/HC/California/E4/09.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/rak.png Rolland and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/gla.png McConvey couldn’t keep up so it’s seven riders crossing the Cat-4 climb together. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cdb.png Juul-Jensen takes the points ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/itd.png Kratochvila and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/min.png Ivanov. Current provisional mountain classification:
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/HC/California/E4/10.jpg

With a maximum of 22 points to be collected on the final climbs, both pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/itd.png Kratochvila and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cfe.png Klemme have the chance of taking the polkadots jersey at the end of the day. Gap to the peloton: still around 3’30.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/HC/California/E4/11.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/HC/California/E4/12.jpg

But it’s those two that are the first to drop halfway up the Cat-1 climb! All other riders behind them are caught by the peloton by now, including pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/rak.png Rolland, but the French’s mountain jersey looks somewhat safe now.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/HC/California/E4/13.jpg

Under the pressure of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/isa.png Koshevoy and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/emo.png Carapaz, the peloton is down to 31 riders. The only Top 20 riders missing are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/bgc.png Bartl (15th) and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/bgc.png Reguigui (18th) as Berg Cycles seems to lose hold of the team classification. Oh, and 20th overall pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/spr.png Slagter, who is of course still in the group up front. The advance is down to 1’45.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/HC/California/E4/14.jpg

The pace in the group wasn’t very high, as evidenced by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/itd.png Kratochvila and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cfe.png Klemme returning, which leads pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/spr.png Slagter to attack! And he quickly gets a sizeable gap!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/HC/California/E4/15.jpg

The breakaway blows up! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/min.png Haga is Slagter’s first chaser, his team mate pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/min.png Ivanov is third through the mountain sprint. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/sct.png Seibeb tries to follow, the rest of the group is struggling.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/HC/California/E4/16.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/HC/California/E4/17.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/min.png Haga caught up to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/spr.png Slagter on the descent, but their five companions are close behind. The leading duo now has four minutes on a peloton that seems to have slowed down a lot – this looks promising, not only for the stage win but it could also mean a significant leap in the overall for Slagter! He was only 4’57 behind pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/p4e.png Pluchkin, with this gap he’d jump into the Top 5. And pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cfe.png Klemme is only another 18 seconds behind him. But there’s still a long way to go.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/HC/California/E4/18.jpg

Leading up to the final climb of the day, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cdb.png Juul-Jensen can’t keep up with the rest of the breakaway – which is reunited again – anymore.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/HC/California/E4/19.jpg

Moments later, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/sct.png Seibeb falls back as well.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/HC/California/E4/20.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/HC/California/E4/21.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/spr.png Slagter attacks again and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/itd.png Kratochvila is the next to drop. But the other three are quick to follow!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/HC/California/E4/22.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/spr.png Slagter may have overplayed his hand! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cfe.png Klemme and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/min.png Haga pass him by! But there are still almost 15 kilometers of downhill and flat before the final ramp to the finish. Let’s see if this get’s back together. The peloton is still more than three minutes behind. This is going to be another breakaway victory.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/HC/California/E4/23.jpg

28 riders cross the climb in the peloton. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/emo.png Carapaz and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/kmm.png Teklehaimanot have been dropped, other than that the major riders are still all together. No one was willing to risk anything so far.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/HC/California/E4/24.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/HC/California/E4/25.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/spr.png Slagter is unrelenting! After the quartet got back together, he attacks again on the flat! Their lead has extended to more than four and a half minutes – he can taste the yellow jersey!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/HC/California/E4/26.jpg

He enters the final two kilometres that average out at 10,5% with the tiniest of advantages. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/min.png Ivanov has done a ton of work to keep him close as his teammate pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/min.png Haga has looked very strong all day.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/HC/California/E4/27.jpg

Into the final kilometer, everything’s back together! They all look really exhausted, who’s got one final punch left in him?

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/HC/California/E4/28.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/spr.png Slagter pays the price for all his attacks. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/min.png Haga and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cfe.png Klemme accelerate!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/HC/California/E4/29.jpg

And the German takes it! Phenomal effort at the end of a fascinating stage. The Minions fall just short but still get two men on the podium.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/HC/California/E4/30.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/min.png Ivanov and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/spr.png Slagter follow 31 and 57 seconds behind, respectively. A pretty massive loss on the home stretch for the Dutch, and it’s now pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cfe.png Klemme who’ll make the bigger jump in the GC. But how far does this take him?

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/HC/California/E4/31.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/itd.png Kratochvila and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/sct.png Seibeb are caught by the peloton in the final few hundred meters! They’d have deserved a reward for their courageous performance today but come up just a little short.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/HC/California/E4/32.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/p4e.png Pluchkin leads pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/vvg.png Talansky over the line and finishes fifth. The duo gets a tiny gap of 9 seconds on the pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ubs.png Amador-led pack, which is timed 2’45 behind the stage winner and only 1’42 behind pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/spr.png Slagter, who now only gains a mere five spots in the GC to be 15th. Still a fine stage, but given what it looked like with 5 kilometres to go, he’ll be disappointed with what he might have squandered with that late attack. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/cfe.png Klemme is now 10th, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/vvg.png Talansky improves one place to fifth overall.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/HC/California/E4/33.jpg

Kraftwerk’s pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/kmm.png Ablenado is the best-placed rider (other than pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/bgc.png Bartl who fell behind much earlier) to lose a bit of time in the final ascent. He drops from 16 to 19 as he finishes next to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/rak.png Rolland, who gets to keep his jersey for now.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/HC/California/E4/34.jpg

After more than 120 kilometres all by himself, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/bgc.png Kupfernagel makes it just three minutes within the time limit. What a massive effort to keep him in the mix for tomorrow’s sprint stage!
