Tour of Ukraine
HC2: 13/4 - 15/4, 3 stages total 193 km
Due to some legal issues between local TV rights holder and PCMDaily TV reporters sadly we could not transmit this race live, but now the fog has lifted and here we go. Still we can’t promise day to day reports, but we will do our best to deliver asap.
Welcome to the 6th edition of Tour of Ukraine on the MG calendar since 2014.
Without checking I would think this was one of the shortest HC2 races on the calender, with a total of less than 200 km maybe even the shortest stage race at all.
We have got many of the best teams and riders from PCT competing with the addition of a single CT team Euskaltel – Elior.
The route is the same as last year which was then a significant change compared to the years before, changed from a clear puncher race to a tempo rider race, although with more focus on the puncher/time trialist. This time we must expect the significant changes in the “rider equipment” to make it a tempo rider race with focus on climber/puncher type tempo riders.
The following will be my personal expectations and only based on how I think different skill will play together so maybe it is way of, at the bottom there will be clean list with all top riders in the different disciplines.
My expectation is that we will have a clear favorite in Pluchkin, he is not the best tempo rider, but my guess is the his ability’s uphill will compensate for that.
Last year winner Coppel will be my expected runner up, if and that is not clear, he can avoid losing to much on the semi-mountain stage he should be such a strong tempo rider that we can take most if the lost time back in the long ITT.
Fraile will be my last podium candidate, based on the fact that he is one of the most well-rounded riders in the race.
But that said there are many riders that excel in one or more “element” of this race, and I won’t be surprised to see one of the following rider sneak into a podium spot, if they have a fantastic form over all three stages: Izagirre, Nepomnyachsniy, Shikai, Goncalves, Ivars, Sepulveda, Haga, Koren
Beneath those a series of riders most likely not breaking top 5, but you never know, they all have options to do fairly well:
Janse van Rensburg, Sterobo, Costa, Chiarello, Rolland, Bazhkou, Ahmad Zamri, Abreu, De Luna and Andriafenomananiaina
List of mentioned riders (my favorites)

If it wasn't for Pluchkin I'd say Shikai has a good shot at winning, which is exactly why I sent him here. If Rolland, Shikai and Costagli can all get in the Top 15 that would be a great result.

Home race, all in! Basically the best team I could field for such a race, and have real high expectations for both Pluchkin and Zouzou.

Stanislau the Manislau is here to prove he’s still got it in PCM18. Can’t expect a repeat of his crazy 3rd last year but a solid GC would be very nice.

Koren should be a pretty decent option for this race. A top 10 overall would be a good result from this race, TTs have proven to be a bit weird so nothing is guaranteed. Tennant is also a good option I think, especially if theres not a very selective stage 2 which with the AI we've seen previously, is an entirely possible result.

Me looking through the favorites lists quickly: "Huh, I thought I was in this race."
Me seeing my team in the startlist: "Wait, did I sign up for an extra C2 race?"
Me realizing I sent this squad to an HC race in a year where I'm in a tense relegation battle and every race day is critical:
Is there a team U25 team classification I could enter?
Knowing that hills = mountains, I wonder if Warbasse would have been the call here. Expecting a zero pointer now. No way Steensen can do anything in this field.

Finally racing again after a long wait. Looking forward to this race, where I think we could compete in every stage. |

Not a race for Claeys I think, would take a subtop result from Haga

Probably another race where we can't score more than peanuts
Thanks for the preview Tamijo

Claeys out of GC contention and Haga underwhelming, not the best of starts in all honesty.

Great start. All 3 of Rolland, Costagli and Shikai in the top 15. Hoping Shikai can take time on others on the final day and not lose any tomorrow.

Yeah in case you missed the Giro prologue, that's a mountain, not a hill.
Same will go for stage 3.

Just for later "analyse" seems like what you are saying is correct but still a good punch is better than nothing.
Must be that if you got punch you can go 80 dot for a km or something, but it still drains a lot, where as if you got climb you can find a perfect "dot" guess here something between 70-75.
So punch is better than nothing, but climb is much better. In any TT with uphill sections.
Did not do a lot to check this, just what i think i saw here, so best would be if someone took the time to do a direct test to check if it is correct.

Schädlich didn't fail to disappoint with his 80 prologue managing the same time as Burke who has 67 prologue (there might be too many negatives in that sentence ). Mountain stat is king!
He still beat Kittel though, me and Atlantius can have a good cry on each others shoulders
Congrats to fjhoekie and thanks for the report Tamijo.

Wow Ropero cracking the Top10?! I had no ambitions here, won't be a great GC result but will give some points at least the Andorran beast!

Seems like the same went for stage 2 as well at least in terms of AI leadership choices, with Areruya and Grmay both well ahead of Bazhkou and not staying with him.
Thanks to Areruya for getting the U25 jersey for the day, turning this into a 2-3 pointer instead of a 0-pointer
