Vuelta a Espana

Stage 7: Onda – Mas de la Costa 183.8 km

Welcome to Onda, a municipality and a town in the autonomous community of Valencian with a population of about 25.000.
The profile quite similar to yesterday, but maybe a little bit harder with all the climbing coming later, and the very steep finish. Not unlikely that the short sharp finish will be better for the explosive riders that the lighter pure climber types.

A sunny day with 27°C, more wind than yesterday from 17 to 21 km/h.

The Race

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fab.png Nareklishvili accelerating right as the flag drops, at his wheel KoM leader pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/grm.png Vink and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/tmo.png Lecourt De Billot

A few meters further back pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ino.png De Souza and behind him pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/bnm.png Culey attempting to catch up.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/GTM/Vuelta/S7/01.jpg

They will not be alone, a 2nd wave with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fab.png Bernard, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/mos.png Cink, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fes.png Kastrantas, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/tmo.png Lemus Davila pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/bnm.png Miller, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fab.png Plucinski, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/mos.png Schlegel, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/t3a.png Vliegen and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fes.png Vuillermoz, catch up within the next 3-4 km and finally pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/gzl.png Geoghegan Hart, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fes.png Ioannidis and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/evo.png Sakalou joins the front after a total of 9.5 km on the route.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/GTM/Vuelta/S7/02.jpg

Will be another 12 km until we get the final attacks from the pack, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/aeg.png van der Poel trying to close the 1’58” up the breakaway, he will be alone on the road over the next 12 km before he joins the break with 149 km to the finish line. At this point the gap has increased to 3’50”

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/GTM/Vuelta/S7/03.jpg

So, who is in the breakaway:
Best placed in GC is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fes.png Kastrantas 15th at +1’28 everybody else at more than 7 minutes.
In U25 pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/aeg.png van der Poel best as 8th at 6’41”
In the KoM we have got the leader in the breakaway pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/grm.png Vink with 22 points, also pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/aeg.png van der Poel got 10 points, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fab.png Plucinski and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fes.png Kastrantas 6 points each, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/mos.png Schlegel and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/t3a.png Vliegen with 4 points.

The on paper best suited on this profile must be pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/evo.png Sakalou, but also pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/mos.png Schlegel, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fes.png Kastrantas, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fes.png Vuillermoz, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fab.png Bernard, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/bnm.png Miller, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/tmo.png Lemus Davila and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/mos.png Cink quite strong on a day like this, so could be a hard challenge for the peloton if they work together well.

The group just roll over the points sprint, almost 100 km left pack at 3’21”

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/GTM/Vuelta/S7/04.jpg

Right after the points sprint we start the climb to Puerto de Marianet, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/gzl.png Geoghegan Hart attempt the early move from 1.2 km, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/evo.png Sakalou the only one reacting. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/evo.png Sakalou close the gap over 300 – 400 meter but never did pass the Englishman.

Tao Geoghegan Hart takes the first KoM points today. KoM leader pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/grm.png Vink gets the last two points behind Sakalou

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/GTM/Vuelta/S7/05.jpg

As the cameras was on the break, we do not know who but someone has upped the pace in the pack and cut the distance down to just 1’45” before we start the 2nd KoM climb today. This time the more important cat.2 Puerto de Eslida.

In the breakaway pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fes.png Ioannidis, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fes.png Kastrantas, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/mos.png Schlegel and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/tmo.png Lecourt De Billot was distanced over the climb and have not caught up on the downhill.

With less that 500 meters to the top, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fab.png Bernard accelerates with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fab.png Plucinski clued, turns out to be a great strategic move as they drop the others and pass the top as one and two, with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fab.png Plucinski claiming the maximum points haul, moving up to shared 2nd in KoM standings

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/GTM/Vuelta/S7/06.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fes.png Ioannidis was swallowed by the pack. While pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fes.png Kastrantas, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/mos.png Schlegel and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/tmo.png Lecourt De Billot rejoined the breakaway. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/p4e.png Laas led the peloton over the KoM.

The distance to the pack is 1’58”, as they start the final cat.3 Puerto de Alcuda de Veo.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/iso.png Kalaba and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/rpn.png Mas leading the pack on the downhill and early part of Alcuda de Veo

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fes.png Kastrantas now setting a hard pace to front to keep the distance to the peloton, dropping first pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/tmo.png Lecourt De Billot then KoM leader pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/grm.png Vink and later pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/bnm.png Culey

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/GTM/Vuelta/S7/07.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fes.png Kastrantas keeps up the hard pressure right to the top and takes the KoM in front of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fab.png Nareklishvili and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/gzl.png Geoghegan Hart

Pack at 1’32”

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/GTM/Vuelta/S7/08.jpg

Over the top and on the downhill the pace is very high and we see pictures of relative strong riders like pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fab.png Shapira, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fab.png Hacecky pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fab.png Poljanski and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/tmo.png Mai already in groups distanced by the peloton with minutes.

On the short uncategorized hill just 5 km prior to the last intermediate sprint, the first top climber was dropped by the extreme pace in the pack, 27th in GC pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/tmo.png Preidler dropped.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/GTM/Vuelta/S7/09.jpg

In the breakaway what may have been the favorite of the group pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/evo.png Sakalou suffers from the hard pace on the flat sections which is his weakest terrain, also he was dropped and now fights on his own to keep the pack behind him, paying the price of not having teammates in the group.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/GTM/Vuelta/S7/10.jpg

Another important climber in trouble, GC 18th pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fes.png Bongiorno can’t keep up with the pace in the peloton.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/GTM/Vuelta/S7/11.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fes.png Kastrantas climb the maximum amount of bonus seconds passing the point sprint first.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ssc.png Brändle leads the pack on the last flat section before the upcoming cat.2

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/evo.png Sakalou was swallowed by the pack and now also pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ino.png De Souza was dropped from the breakaway.

When the breakaway starts the climb to Mas del Moro, The peloton or favorite group is at 1’57” (77 riders), group pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/tmo.png Preidler at 3’49”, no reports of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fes.png Bongiorno since we last saw him but it looks like he is back in the favorite group.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fes.png Vuillermoz is leading the breakaway up the climb, keeping up a constant high pace. First dropping pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/mos.png Schlegel then pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/gzl.png Geoghegan Hart and latest pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fes.png Kastrantas

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/mos.png Cink with a well timed late attack win the KoM sprint in front of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/tmo.png Lemus Davila

Leaving the KoM leaderboard unchanged.

For some reason the pack has slowed down and lost a lot of time on this climb, the gap suddenly back at the 5 minutes level.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/GTM/Vuelta/S7/12.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/bnm.png Miller was dropped over the top.

The next important event is a disaster at team Aegon – Lavazza, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/aeg.png Velits has a mechanical and the management decide to bring back pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/aeg.png Eiking, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/aeg.png van der Hugenhaben and most important pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/aeg.png Olivier to help.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/GTM/Vuelta/S7/13.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fab.png Bernard attacks on the final downhill, leaving him with a small advantage entering the climb to the summit finish.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/t3a.png Vliegen stands still as soon as the brutal uphill start, leaving us with a pursuit of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/mos.png Cink, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/tmo.png Lemus Davila, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fab.png Nareklishvili, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fab.png Plucinski, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fes.png Vuillermoz and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/aeg.png van der Poel

Peloton at 4’25”, group pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/tmo.png Preidler at 5’51”, group pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/aeg.png Velits at 6’31.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/GTM/Vuelta/S7/14.jpg

With unbelievable determination from his teammates, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/aeg.png Velits rejoin with favorite group, with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/aeg.png van der Hugenhaben and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/aeg.png Olivier.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/GTM/Vuelta/S7/15.jpg

Up front pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fab.png Bernard was caught and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fes.png Vuillermoz takes the lead, dropping pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/aeg.png van der Poel and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fab.png Nareklishvili

2.5 km to the top

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/GTM/Vuelta/S7/16.jpg

2 km to the top for the stage leaders.

In the pack the serious part of the pursuit has started with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/akm.png Taaramäe passing teammate pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/akm.png Galta to take the lead.

The order of riders behind him is:
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/akm.png Galta pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/des.png Yates, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/rpn.png Mosca, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/rpn.png Kudus, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/des.png Tenorio, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/tti.png Foliforov, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/p4e.png Pluchkin, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/akm.png Tvetcov, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/mos.png Barguil, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ebd.png Brambilla, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/bnm.png Haig, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/iso.png Keizer, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fes.png Bongiorno, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fpc.png Cattaneo, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/bnm.png Dyball, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/afk.png Quintana, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ssc.png Denifl, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/evo.png Lopez, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fes.png Kastrantas, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/tti.png Kolesnikov, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/eav.png Kirsch, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/tti.png Kritskiy, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ino.png Warchol and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ino.png Brenes

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/GTM/Vuelta/S7/17.jpg

1.7 km top the top.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fes.png Vuillermoz keeps pushing up front now also dropping first pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fab.png Bernard then pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/tmo.png Lemus Davila

300 meters behind them pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/akm.png Taaramäe about to catch pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fab.png Nareklishvili and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/aeg.png van der Poel

Still 50 riders together in the favorite group, slopes above 13%.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/GTM/Vuelta/S7/18.jpg

1.2 km left.
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fes.png Vuillermoz how shook of his last two breakaway companions, riding alone towards the summit.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/mos.png Cink and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fab.png Plucinski at 37”, favorites at 1’03”

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/GTM/Vuelta/S7/19.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/akm.png Taaramäe attacks under the red kite, he is now 100 meters behind the stage leader with everyone else reeled in.

The situation behind Taaramäe is:
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fab.png Plucinski, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/des.png Tenorio, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/p4e.png Pluchkin, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/mos.png Cink, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/rpn.png Kudus, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/mos.png Barguil, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ebd.png Brambilla, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/bnm.png Haig

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/GTM/Vuelta/S7/20.jpg

No way pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fes.png Vuillermoz could keep those riders behind him at slopes above 16%, he is passed by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/akm.png Taaramäe with 800 meters left.

There is a small gap to the larger group led by
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/des.png Tenorio in front of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/p4e.png Pluchkin, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/rpn.png Kudus, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/mos.png Barguil, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ebd.png Brambilla, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/bnm.png Haig, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/ssc.png Denifl, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fab.png Plucinski, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/tti.png Kritskiy, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/mos.png Cink, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/iso.png Keizer, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/des.png Yates and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Micros/fpc.png Cattaneo

Another small gap behind Cattaneo

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2019/Races/GTM/Vuelta/S7/21.jpg
