Team Foundation

Computer Sciences Corporation (CSC) entered the world of professional cycling in 2001 with telecom giant Tiscali. In their first year in the sport they were able to win the Tour de France king of the mountains classification with Laurent Jalabert. And then in 2002, Team CSC-Tiscali went to Italy and finish 2nd overall in the Giro with American Tyler Hamilton. Losing to Paolo Savoldelli by 1'41''. Tiscali unhappy with new ownership moving the team to Denmark in 2003, so they left the world of cycling. Leaving Team CSC is the head sponsor for the next 5 years.

With CSC as the top primary sponsor for the 2003 season, Hamilton was named team leader with one goal in mind, win the Tour de France. But that goal was short lived, Hamilton crashed on Stage 1 and lost a bunch of time. Even after a strong come back through the mountains, Hamilton just couldn't earn enough time and finish 4th overall. And at the end of the season Hamilton transferred teams, leaving a huge gap for a new leader.

Long time team manager, Bjarne Riis, needed another superstar to take Hamilton's place. The team brought on Ivan Basso to join Carlos Sastre in competing for Grand Tour wins. In the 2004 Tour de France, Team CSC had a very successful Tour, with Basso winning a mountain stage and reaching the podium in Paris with his third place finish. Bjarn Riis and Team CSC's efforts in the 2004 Tour were even made into the cycling movie Overcoming.

At the start of 2005 season financial problems hit the team hard, forcing many of their riders to take pay-cuts. But this was the strongest year yet for CSC. They won three team stage wins in the Giro d'Italia, one by David Zabriskie and two by Basso, though the overall victory escaped from Basso when he was beset by a stomach ailment. Midway through the 2005 Tour de France, CSC extended sponsorship until 2008. enabling Riis to renew the contract with Basso for an additional three years. Basso got second place in the tour and Zabriskie won in the prologue. Nicki Sørensen won a stage of the Vuelta a España. Team CSC won the 2005 ProTour.

In 2006, with sponsorship for several years, the focus was to win all three Grand Tours, with Ivan Basso riding both Giro d'Italia and the Tour de France, and Carlos Sastre the Vuelta a España. Team CSC surprised by announcing that Sastre would ride the Giro as helper for Basso, that he would ride all three Grand Tours. 2005's winner Paolo Savoldelli was strongest in the first stages, and Jan Ullrich took a surprise win in the time trial ahead of Basso, but Basso dominated with three wins on mountain finishes and in the team time trial. Basso won by 9'18''. The Tour de France announced that Basso would not ride the 2006 Tour after apparent involvement in the Operación Puerto doping scandal. Sastre took over as captain and was the strongest in the favorite group on the last mountain stages, but a poor last time trial placed him fourth overall. Basso still under doping restrictions when the Vuelta came around meant the new team leader would be Carlos Sastre. Sastre came fourth in the Vuelta after starting in the lead when CSC won the initial team time trial. Carlos Sastre had now raced in the past 5 Grand Tours. Team CSC is comes away with the Pro Tour Championship again, back to back.

In 2007, Riis had no choice but to leave the team because of leaked doping scandals broke out around him. Ownership now went into hands of Balaverde, a new and upcoming manager. But very unexperience, and unorganized. He evenually transformed the team into a young squad from 2007 Cycling Draft. Pushing out old faces like Sastre and Julich. His plan for the new future put the old Team CSC up in smoke. After failing to get close to Grand Tour win, Team CSC finish 16th overall in Team Standings. After 2 great seasons (2005 and 2006), CSC hit rock bottom. Eventaully dropping their sponsorship and were replaced by Ferrari.

Now in 2012, Team CSC is back. Hoping to complete what they started in 2005, to win all 3 Grand Tour in 1 year. To help them with there goal, they have brought along Orbea. Orbea is know for their great bikes in Spain. Also CSC is very pleased to have Caixa Geral de Depósitos (CGD) pledge their support and money to the team as well. CGD is a very trusted Portuguese state-owned banking corporation and the largest bank in Portugal. And last but not least, Carvalho Customs are glading in charge of putting our team in a quality custom made jersey for this year. Team CSC-Orbea is ready to take on the CT is year with the hope of promotion in the years to follow. But more importantly finish CSC's real goal ...

Win the Giro de Italia, Tour de France, and Vuelta Espana, in 1 Year.

However in their first season back, they realized how difficult this comeback was going to be as they finished 22nd in the CT division. Leaders Igor Anton and Rui Costa did everything they could but in the end it just wasn't good enough, by a lot. Looks like our real goal could have to go to wayside for a while as we just have to take a step back and figure out a way to promote first. So the journey to promotion continues in 2013!

Because the riders are stubborn and didn't want to take another picture.... Especially since they are all away racing in their NC. I'll try to convince one of them when the get back. Wink

The Rumors Have Started

Entry #1

It's that time a year again. And just like every other team around the block we are starting to gear up for the well anticipated Transfer Season. However, unlike like last year we have a good base of riders to work off of and build a relatively solid team around (depending on what guys want for their contract renewals). And after a few weeks of debating the direction of the program, we have come up with our solution. Much to my dismay we are planning to dump the American aspect of our roster and move more towards Spain, Portugal, and Russia. And as an American manager this hurts me alot, however we got to do what we got to do. And we feel this is our best way to get promoted would be to focus in and secure the Iberian peninsula, which might cause some angry with fellow rivals like Cerne and probably big brother Santander in the future, but we have looked over our data and have projected this is our best chance to succeed as a team under the CSC-Orbea logo. Rest be assured we plan to be friendly rivals and won't try to cause too much trouble but we sure aren't going to lay down in the middle of a heated bidding war.

We will always be open for discussion about our riders however as said before Spain, Portugal, and a small part of Russia will be our focus moving forward so those riders will most likely be staying... Everyone else knows they could be heading out the door relatively soon.

According to some rumors could the experienced Spanish stage rider Carlos Castaño see himself in a team, that has a stronger Iberian base. Manager Rycadinho holds him in high regard, but a transfer to a team like CSC could be too good to refuse for the aging stage racer, though it remains to see if Rycadinho share the same view since he and ING sees Castaño as a valuable asset to the team

Care to give a answer to this rumor?

Mresuperstar
Castaño would be a perfect fit here at CSC and we accept all kinds of Iberian talent young and old, a perfect example would be legend Carlos Sastre ending his retirement here. Manager Rycadinho may have to realize that his time is dwindling and with a respectable offer we could probably work a deal out.

There are rumours that Craig Lewis is in talks with Sram-Riboxx. Both were confident that CSC will let him go for little money but Sram manager Felix_29 said an exchange with Sousa would be unlikely. Has Lewis already contacted his current manager about his future plans?

Mresuperstar
Yes we have talked with Craig and he know, along with Brad Armstrong, that they probably won't come back next year. Craig's first request was to go to the new PCT AMEX, however I just talked to him and he said going to Scram would also be nice. CSC-Orbea is still highly interested in Sousa and a multi rider deal is something we would be willing to do.

rycadinho
I can say that Carlos is, if he wish so, able for a transfer as long we think the offer is right. There are probably a couple of teams who would like his services, but for now - let's see what will happen during the renewal phase.

Thanks for your quick respond to the rumor circulating around our Spanish star Wink

A few days ago, Ruben Plaza made it clear that for 2013 he is looking for new challenges and that the Continental Tour might be the perfect way to refresh his career. Some journalists were fast to link him to CSC and ING. The Dutch team have already confirmed that they are interested in the Spaniard. What about CSC?

Of Course, well depending on his wage and the offer since he is also on the other side of his prime years. We also have to see how the free agents fall before pursuing such a rider. But make no questions about it we are also interested.

Transfer Talk & Rumors

Gustavovskiy wrote:
Team CSC-Orbea's highest paid rider of the 2012 season, Rui Costa, was responsible for most of the success the team had last year. However some voices have been heard saying that the portuguese is unhappy with the recent rumors involving the interest of his manager in UBS-BMC riders Sergio Barrio and Florentino Marquez. Costa is afraid that these possible acquisitions may weaken his position as the CSC-Orbea's main leader. He's also concerned with the possibility of taking a hit in his high salary in order for the team to have sufficient funds for the signings.

In light of all this preoccupation Costa's agent is said to have already contacted a handful of team managers to place his rider for the forthcoming season, one of those being obviously the most awesome portuguese team ever, Prio-Porto.

The question now is - Will Rui Costa come out of the closet?

Let me make this clear. Costa was scared, for about 33 minutes, until this so called "awesome" Prio-Porto team also expressed interest in the same two riders. He is no longer concerned or is even considering to move away from CSC. And when asked about this claim he had this to say -

CSC is home now. They have guarantee that the will not cut my paycheck for next season unless I would allow them to, and in return they would use that money to buy more Portuguese riders. So this claim of me taking a paycut to support the possible contracts of Marquez and Barrio is utterly false. The team has told me they can cover their contracts if I do take a paycut or not. It's my decision. And now that sources are saying this false claim came from Prio-Porto is starting to make me think they aren't so awesome.

- Rui Costa

AMEXpc has already announced that they will be searching for Columbian riders for the 2013 PCT season.

Climbers will be a focus so keep us in mind as the transfer season opens.

If you want Colombian riders, then you have come to the right place. We are planning to sell all our talent climbers so have your pocketbooks ready as they will be going to highest bidder. No questions asked, they already know this and are hoping they can all end up on the same team.

The newly established colombian team Ecopetrol - Aeropostal is highly interested in hiring well skilled colombian cyclists to their future team. As an unknown source around the colombian riders of the CSC-Orbea team confirmed, they are also enamored of the though joining the new colombian flagship. As the manager of the CSC - Orbea team already implied, there might be a chance of an agreement between the two teams. The general manager of the colombian team confirmed that in saying "Yeah I read the newspapers. If its true it all depends on what they want for them."

CSC would like to give clarification one last time on this topic, we will be dropping our Colombian talent for the next season. Whether that is through not re-signing them or transfer listing them. We hope to do the latter so the team can receive a few extra transfer funds to spend elsewhere. So with being said we have came up with a baseline number that we would accept for both wages and transfer fees. So if you can match our baseline number (that you can starting offering at the beginning of the transfer season) then they can be yours. However we will accept any offers from other teams that offer more. We are really exciting to get renewals done and head into the transfer season. Hope to stay in contact.
