We are in Portugal for the next battle of the C2 puncheurs. The best of the division line up here to contest the GP Onda-Boavista 2013. This is the first edition of the race, which should be hotly contested.
Although this is a Continental race, two Pro-Continental teams make the trip here. CSC-Orbea and Prio-Porto are included in the startlist, and especially Prio will be hoping to make a big impression in their home race. In total 13 teams are racing.
The route itself is not incredibly hard, but the double salvo of the Santa Justa and Alto da Serra climbs near the finish should create an exciting finish. The other climbs probably come too early to make a difference.
Probably the best hilly rider here, who is the favourite as a result, is Weening of Gazelle. As well as having the best reputation as a puncheur, the Dutchman also brings a great squad of helpers with every one being above average as a domestique.
Mehr Wenige can probably match him in the hills, but the German Champion lacks support from a weaker Adira squad. If he wants the win, he will have to do it with little help.
Another big contender attending is Sanchez Gonzalez. He can climb with the best while also packing a punch on the downhills, where he could make a move. Like Gazelle, Iberia bring a squad full of talent. These two teams are both trying to win the division so a win for either of them would be a boost.
The next couple of contenders are probably dark horses. Barrio of CSC is great on the uphills but can’t do much else. PrivatBank also bring an interesting rider in Cardoso. Cardoso can sprint well and if he can make it to the finish in the leading group he must be a favourite. The Ukranian squad also bring Fonte who can climb decently, but not with the very best.
Maybe a bit like Fonte, Ilias and Grau are both decent puncheurs but could struggle to hang onto the biggest riders if the pace is high. On their day though they could pull out a great result, which is what Magna and FCB will be hoping.
Undoubtedly the crowd favourites, Prio will be hoping to impress their supporters with some attacking racing. They don’t have a great contender however with Pires not at the level of some of the bigger riders. Maybe the Portugese would be better suited cheering for another home rider in the form of Eduardo Silva, who leads Mobil.
Then there is a category of riders who are below the others in terms of ability but with some good luck could manage a higher finish. Talabardon, Appleby, Galle all fall into that group and their respective teams will pin their hopes on them.
Finally, there is still Credexbank to mention. The Belarussians bring no rider of note at all, leaving everyone wondering why they are here. Probably their best hope for their squad of sprinters is for a mass finish despite the hills, even if their best sprinter is far below others in this field. |

Why would Prio be the crowd favourite? My team might not be Portugese, but we bring 3 strong Portugese riders
Hope Cardoso can hang on, or that Fonte will benefit a lot from the home advantage
Oh and Cunha should attack...

Expecting top 10, top 5 maybe. And Mora should try something too in the sprint. |

Strong startlist - just bring home some points Ilias, thats all I think I can expect from you
DMW to win, Gazelle never seem to win these hilly classics, they just finish 3rd through 7th for a huge amount of points.

finally we are back in action, almost a month after the last race ... the objective is to win but I know we are not the strongest candidates. yet all that is below the top 5 will be a disillusion

Samu should finish on the podium. He hasn't won anything yet so I hope that changes soon Plus defeating our Gazelle rivals would be cool

Ok Weening, it's time for your first one day win. Your low-paid teammates are outscoring you and the sponsor can't handle another tactical blunder. Man up and do it!

Really nice startlist and an unpredictable course should make this a good one.

That was a fun little race - nice report FroomeDog, though quick note ANC did score points this race with Appleby in 18th and Squire in 21st
Ilias getting a 5th place is quite good for us, the route was a good one for him as it is shorter race, but a quality result nonetheless. Paulus and Demare get a point each as a nice bonus, so yay for young riders performing.

Well we are expecting nothing out of this race, just here to fill the C2 quota of races and to give the young riders and riders who normally fill a domestique role a free run.

A few of these guys are proving pretty consistent.
The Sanchez - Weening - Mehr Wenige battle continues to rage over the hilly classics (as does the Barrio failures).
Sammy Sanchez seems to have that touch of class about him.

The race really ignited in that Santa Justa climb. Samu being the major instigator, it seems only fair that he takes the win there.
And great ride by Pires. 6th place is more than satisfactory from him.

I can not be disappointed with Mehr-Wenige, got the podium and at the end he was always pulling .. For the rest of the team do not understand but it seems that once the leader jumps to the front of the race the rest of the team turns off completely ...

Congrats Spilak, strong sprint by Sanchez.
Weening made no mistakes this time and grabbed second place, so I'm content. I'll just have to accept that he is not a winner. Also good to see two domestiques attack and grab some points.
Nice report FroomeDog.
