The Strade Bianche, formerly known as Monte Paschi Eroica (2009 and 2010 as ProTour race) is held annually near Siena, in the region of Tuscany, Italy. It is a warm weather precursor to the cobbled classics of the north (Ronde van Vlaanderen a month away). The field is usually made up of riders who can ride well on cobble stones and can handle hills to.
The race starts in Gaiole in Chianti and finishes in the famous public space Piazza del Campo in Siena. The route consists of 188 kilometres around the city of Siena, including 45 kilometres of gravel roads, called "sterrati" in Italy. Parts of the route were originally used in a recreational race, or "gran fondo". The organizers of the race, RCS sports, were inspired by the Tour of Flanders with its hills, and Paris–Roubaix with its cobblestone sections.
The race was lengthened in 2011 (when the race lost his ManGame ProTour status), 9 km and one more gravel sector was added, taking the total unsealed sections to 57.2 km. The riders now leave Gaiole in Chianti (instead of San Gimignano) and head south towards the first of the eight sectors of le strade bianche (Translation: white gravel roads).

Today is a busy day in the world of cycling, later today you can watch the best climbers of the Continental Circuit during the Tour of the Middle East. Or if you enjoy uphill sprinting more, you can go watch the Gisborne GP instead, but we start this day with the early morning broadcast of the Strade Bianche in Tuscany, Italy.
The first edition (2009) was won by Clément Lhotellerie (Nintendo - Honda), he soloed to the finish, and looking at the startlist, most teams are again hoping for a solo win on the Piazza del Campo in Siena.
The organisation of the Strade Bianche has invited 24 teams to compete; there are twenty-three Professional Continental teams and one ProTour team: Meiji - JR East but surprisingly they don't have the best riders of the field, they do however have good old Cristiano Salerno in their line-ups (who finished 4th in 2012). In total there are 27 riders from Italy on the startlist, Eddie Stobart is the main supplier with 5 Italians.
Last year winner Michael Van Stayen isn't here to defend his title, but Rui Costa (winner of 2012 (Team CSC-Orbea), now riding for Prio - Porto) and Nick Nuyens (winner of 2011 (Domina Vacanze), now riding for Gazelle) are.
The two main contenders are Danny Summerhill (best cobbler) and Cesare Di Maggio (best puncheur).
Behind these main favorites there are a lot of other good puncheurs here in Italy like McCarthy, Kelderman, Dowsett, Roy, Ben Nasser, Sanchez Gil, Boswell and Mehr-Wenige.
Also cobblers like Vanmarcke, Vandenbergh, Trentin, Steurs and Declerq are present, Filippo Pozzato is an outsider who both can handle hills and gravel roads really well.

Brilliant preview. Loved the geographical information as well. Mainly because I already visited the piazza del Campo and San Gimignano.
Evonik rides for LLS but should this end up as a group sprint we also have Geschke here who could also deliver a strong result (if he would at least try for once ).
A Big Thank You To All MG Reporters!

For some reason I thought Strade was a cobbled race, have no clue why. Well, at least Trentin can handle climbs...

No idea about this one.
Thurau, Villella and Bazzana could surprise with some points I hope.
Vanmarcke could attack I hope but he should struggle on the hills. Just got some rd left with him. |

Packed startlist. It's a win goal for us, and we have two good options in Ben Nasser (2nd last year) and Impey. Both should have an outside chance, got to hope for another surprise though. Should be a great race whatever happens. |

Trying to cover all eventualities with Chaves for hills, Gavazzi and Modolo for sprint if big group prevails, and VDB and del Nero as wildcards. Given the many different scenarios this parcours could throw up, will certainly be an interesting read!

It will be very interesting to see how the new AI handles AMEX's co-leaders: Ian Boswell & Dieter Mehr-Wenige.
We hope it is not a disaster.

Nice background story Oleg!
The competition is pretty huge, so it will be a though race for Pozzato and Furdi.
Still, anything is possible if Pozzo manages to hang on.

Thanks for the nice preview to our win goal this season. Best scenario will be Di Maggio gapping the rest, but the race development isreally hard to predict.

While I think this should be considered a cobbled race, I'm not sure how tough the game thinks the gravel roads should be. If they do add some aspect of cobbles to the race, think I've got a great shot with Summerhill, if not, then it might be a bad day. ... ... Who am I kidding I'm still counting on Danny to pull something out here.

Some preview!
Cobblers doing something here? Hm, don't see it. A top 10 by Roy would make it a decent race. Getting in the break would be nice. |

Hope we can 'snatch' some TV time by getting in the break, not sure if Kono will do anything here as the startlist is packed, any points will be a bonus to be truthful

Cobbled stat is irrelevant here. For the first 3 MG editions the gravel was set as cobbles, but it's all about the hills now.
Dowsett's first race of the season. Gisborne clashing hasn't helped as it might have since all the very top puncheurs are still here anyway. Should be a good fight.

Oops sorry, forgot to check this side of the Man Game forums.
Hopefully Hatanaka can pull out a good result here, but with the limits of PT riders, Im not expecting much more than a Top 10 at best.

I feel I made the right decision sending Betancourt to Gisbone instead of Tuscany since allmost all the top guns are here.
Oleg, you showed few love to Ventoso in the preview but I don't blame you seeing the competition. Even so, I'm reasonably confident that he can archive a good result. Taking a look at the previous years it's been a hilly-sprinter friendly race. Hope is this case one more.
Thanks Oleg for a really nice an inmersive preview
Good luck to everybody!

PCM screwed us again in Gisborne, despite us having one of those strongest teams. Don't have much hope here, maybe Hoffman and or Hategeka can at least get a top 10.

I'm only here because the HC banding forced me. I'd be happy with being in the break or a top 15-20 from Zingle.
