Giro dell’Emilia
6th edition of the puncheurs’ galore: the Giro dell’Emilia. Almost 200 kilometers around the area of Bologna, Emilia, culminating into the ‘Colle di San Luca’, that will be repeated 5 times over the course of less than 40 kilometers. Needless to say, that climb is scarily steep. As steep as an average slope of 10%, with peaks reaching 18%.
Since 2009, 6 different riders have stood onto the highest step of the podium. In 2010 the race was included in the PT calendar, but expect that year, the race has always been of (Pro) Continental level. The most recent winner is Cesare Di Maggio who, guess what, features into this year’s startlist as well, and can probably be considered the main favourite, even though his season hasn’t been as good as last year’s mesmerizing one. The Italian will have to face a tough opposition, after narrowly beating Chris Froome last year. Let’s take a quick look at the most important names at the start in Bologna:
Rider | HI | RES | ACC | Rider | HI | RES | ACC | Di Maggio | 82 | 68 | 75 | Boswell | 78 | 72 | 74 | van der Hugenhaben | 80 | 76 | 66 | Bellis | 78 | 71 | 75 | Kelderman | 80 | 75 | 72 | Mehr-Wenige | 78 | 69 | 67 | Costa | 80 | 72 | 72 | Juul-Jensen | 77 | 74 | 79 | Dowsett | 80 | 69 | 71 | Furdi | 77 | 73 | 72 | Monfort | 79 | 74 | 75 | Felline | 77 | 73 | 78 | Levarlet | 79 | 72 | 68 | Hoogerland | 77 | 72 | 72 | Boily | 78 | 72 | 74 | Teklit | 77 | 72 | 70 |
Di Maggio has been the best pure puncheur in the Continental division during the last 2 years. A lack of consistent results – less than 5 podiums this year – means that he has to put his crown back in contention, and this race is one of his most vivid chances to reconfirm himself as the strongest.
Kelderman proved he is one of the brightest talents, if not of the MG, of his country by being one of the most constant puncheurs in the divisions, and even winning quite some races on his own! As a plus, he’s got one of the strongest support casts here, with Felline and Vogt lined up for Puma. Will he keep scoring big here?
van der Hugenhaben is another interesting bet for tomorrow, but the season caught him off guard so far, and he demonstrated that he misses some explosiveness compared to this year’s rivals.
Costa needs to deliver if he wants to see his own team in PT the next season. Prio were predicted as the favourites for this season’s overall standings but quite a lot of unlucky circumstances made so that we can only see them outside of the top 5. The Portuguese hasn’t been too brilliant himself either.
Dowsett and Levarlet are some of the biggest names for the podium. The latter has a strong backing up team, and we’ve seen what Risa can do in these kinds of races.
Bellis - Boily and Mehr-Wenige - Boswell combos will be interesting to watch: team work could be important in case there won’t be much selection before the last passage up San Luca.
Not to forget about Gazelle's countless options: Monfort, Furdi, Hofland, Weening and Konrad will all be important with a view to their PCT crown fight, although after what we've seen at Paris-Tours, it'll be hard to gain the 1st place back from Aegon, that will line up Thurau and Villella as their leaders, along with the ever worrying Bazzana and Olivier.

I'm saying Keldermann to win cause Cio complain when he doesn't win and he'll complain now if he does win
Big race for many teams, Maggio should make sure Vontobel are safe here as well.

AMEX-Navigon is still entertaining dreams of a top 10 10 standings finish. To make that possible AMEX needs to do well her in this Punchur's Classic. we are going to need 2 riders to finish the top 12 and for 2 others to score points.
This will require a massive team effort. Firs we need to et a rider into the breakaway. Le Gac has been good and making those types of starts. After that Boswell Mehr-Wingie and Taborre will need to work together so that all three and challenge for top 12 finishes.
If you cannot dream you might as well pack up and drive the bus back to the airport.

A nice depth here will hopefully help to get some points in late top10-30 with 2-3 riders.
Monfort and Furdi better not overperform too much though. |

Yeah, hope we can sleep much more sound after this race. A Top 5 will be sufficient in this regard. Monford, Boily, Kelderman are the guys we sense doing fine, too.
Nice preview, thanks matt!

One of my favorite races! Rovny as an outsider might actually do something here!

We need a monster result to get back into Aegon's slipstream. This seems like a good race to start the comeback. Let's do it

Hard finish suits Di Maggio/Keldermann but hoping the easier bit before and lots of downhills can allow Boily to do soemthing with Bellis staying with the big guns though more then like Bellis will follow the winning attack and boily will clip of the peleton at the end for a top 15 |

We as usual dont have one of the biggest favourites here but a few potential points scorer in Hoogerland, Reimer, Hermans & Lövkvist. |

Crap what am I doing on a profile like this.... hopefully we just attack like crazy and get lucky, otherwise finishing 100th will be an accomplishment.

Should be a fun race, with a good bunch of suitable winners. Di Maggio stands as the most prominent one, from his stats, but let's see how much will the race consider the rider's stats to calculate the winner.
Thanks for the preview, matt

No mention for Zingle? Thanks for the preview though.
Hopefully a top 10 is possible but a top 20 is realistic.

After reporting this last year I had hoped to do it again, as it was brilliant last year. Hopefully this year will be equally exciting

Well this was shit.
But surprised it was just as shit as the puncheur team Gazelle.
Thanks for the report and congrats to Cio, who now will get an even bigger check by Kelderman. |
