Preview and Report written by roro!
I based my preview a bit on last year's Gustavovskiy one, I'm still learning
Badaling International
Since the 2010 season, the Badaling International became the year opener for ProTour teams and some invited PCT contenders. After some sort of parade in Beijing's streets, the peloton will go under the Great Wall of China, for seven climbs over Badaling. With 230 kilometers to ride in early January, all the leaders will have to be in great shape if they want a result soon in the season. Let's now have a look to the previous podiums on this race :
| 1st | 2nd | 3rd | 2010 | S.Sanchez | Cunego | Ricco | 2011 | F.Schleck | Bakelants | Sinkewitz | 2013 | Cunego | Boasson Hagen | Ponzi | 2014 | F.Schleck | Bakelants | Cunego | 2015 | Trofimov | Bakelants | Van Garderen |
Frank Schleck, two times winner, is here again but will be more likely an helper for his fellow countryman Ben Gastauer. The puncher from Luxembourg is not the top favourite however. Edvald Boasson Hagen has indeed the lowest odds for this race, even if he only podiumed once, back in 2013. The norwegian will have to beat guys like Jan Bakelants, who already scored the second place thrice in this race, or the reigning winner, Yuri Trofimov. A lot of other guys are coming as outsiders : Tejay van Garderen (3rd last year), Simone Ponzi, racing for the recently promoted Kenya Airways, the latvian star Toms Skujins... Let's not forget other guys like Wilco Kelderman, Francesco Ginanni, Sean De Bie, Dimitri Claeys or even Peter Sagan. The other teams, even if they don't have top punchers, will be eager to score important points for their first race of 2016.
Here's what each team supposed leader have done on this race in the past :
Name | Participations | Best result | Hill stat | Edvald Boasson Hagen | 4 participations | 2nd ('13) | 85 | Jan Bakelants | 4 participations | 2nd ('11, '14, '15) | 84 | Yuri Trofimov | 3 participations | 1st ('15) | 83 | Simone Ponzi | 3 participations | 3rd ('13) | 83 | Toms Skujins | 3 participations | 10th ('14) | 83 | Francesco Ginanni | 2 participations | 8th ('14) | 83 | Wilco Kelderman | 1 participation | 99th ('13) | 82 | Tejay van Garderen | 4 participations | 3rd ('15) | 82 | Ben Gastauer | 4 participations | 18th ('15) | 82 | Sean De Bie | 2 participations | 54th ('14) | 81 | Dimitri Claeys | 2 participations | 18th ('14) | 83 | Peter Sagan | 2 participations | 6th ('15) | 80 | Robin van der Hugenhaben | 3 participations | 10th ('13) | 80 | Jack Bobridge | 3 participations | 46th ('13) | 82 | Maurice Schreurs | 3 participations | 34th ('15) | 81 | Luis Leon Sanchez Gil | 4 participations | 4th ('10) | 78 | Clement Koretzky | 2 participations | 7th ('15) | 79 | Alexey Lutsenko | 2 participations | 48th ('15) | 80 | Christopher Juul-Jensen | 2 participations | 83rd ('13) | 78 | Matej Mohoric | None | / | 78 | Laurent Pichon | 3 participations | 22nd ('15) | 79 | Ian Boswell | None | / | 78 | Ion Izagirre | 2 participations | 27th ('15) | 78 | Andrii Bratashcuk | 1 participation | 97th ('15) | 77 |
You now have everything you need to watch the first PT race of the season !

Let's see if Bakelants can finally go one step better and take the win... EBH has it for me though

Definitely not the most suited race for De Bie with the long climbs. Looking more forward to the Ardennes classics.
Top 15 will do for me for the start. Top20 only I fear. |

Top 75, here we come!
I hope that Tanovitchii tries some crazy attack at least.
Good luck to all, my pick is Bakelants.

I'd put my money on Ponzi here.

I think you have to go with Truffles as the favourite to repeat here, I always like a bit of MO here as I think climbs are a wee bit long up to the Great Wall.
Looking forward to the report roro good luck.

I second Smowz in his choice of favourite. MO shouldn't be unimportant which should help the Russian star.
I'm not too confident about Skujins in his Evonik debut. The climbs might be too long for him (a.k.a. his mountain stat is a bit too low ) so I would be happy enough with a top 8 result.
A Big Thank You To All MG Reporters!

Didn't know LLS had come here before, or that he had finished fourth, but that gives me some hope.
Really just want the team to attack and do something with our wildcard, even if we don't get a top result but LLS has decent Mo and has gotten a top 5, so maybe something is on the cards.
Thanks for the great preview Roro!

Trofimov and Ponzi are the two obvious podium contendenders for me here, while I think either EBH or Bakelandts will grab the last podium spot. For the rest of the top puncheurs, it really comes down to the daily form, whether they will finish 5th or 15th imo.

We would be satisfied with a top-3, let the game begin! Also important to see if sending a strong/fighting backup team actually matters in PCM15, if not we are in for a long season Thanks roro_352 for the preview!

Not the ideal start for us here, but we will cross fingers for Koretzky. With some luck he could be top 10, but 15th or so seems more realistic.

Curious if Pellaud is able to sneak into spotlight. Our breakaway rider of 2015got a well-suiting race for his PT-premiere at Vesuvio.
With Grand and Penasa starting we're cheering for Evonik and Jayco, too.

So our first race as a PT team, and we have Ponzi riding as well. I'm hoping for a podium finish here, and if he can be in the lead group on the final downhill his sprint should be a great asset. |

I think that this may be Bakelants time after repeated runners-up placings - tipping him for victory. Counter-intuitive to this statement I see Bouyges Telecom as major relegation candidates (two excellent leaders, but not much point-scoring potential below that seems very limited for PT), hence this may be an isolated high-point for Crommy's season (sorry)

Let's get this started, shall we? The excitement levels are on a maximum here.
A Top 10 by Kelderman should be within reach, especially considering his great STA which will benefit him in this race more than in many others.
A slight cause of worry might be the MO factoring in here, but at least we completed our lineup with our best climbers for that case thanks to leftover race days, so this is probably the strongest 8-man team we can field for anything going uphill.
Herklotz for breakaway success!!
