Scandinavia Open Road Race
Category: C1 | 188,4 km | terrain: hilly | Sweden |
188.4 kilometers are on the table for todays C1 classic Scandinavia Open Road Race. The stage from Vaggeryd to Huskvarna takes place in the region of Jönköping, Sweden.
The climate there is known for being rough, but that won't be the only issue for the riders. After some flat starting kilometers the peloton will head onto a circuit up and around a frightening hill, the Bondberget. There we'll also see the final showdown on uprising road.
This race surely has some tradition to offer looking at the history in the man-game. The first 3 sprinter-friendly flat editions from 2009 to 2011 were won by Maaskant (2009), Rowe (2010) and Vaitkus (2011). After a pause the classic came back as a puncheurs festival in 2013. From then on it was a hills paradise, given the winners were Chris Froome (2013), Cesare Di Maggio (2014) and Jay McCarthy (2015). All of them are on the startlists and among the biggest favourites for receiving the title:
| Hi | Ac | Fl | Mo | St | Rs | | Hi | Ac | Fl | Mo | St | Rs | Froome | 82 | 75 | 70 | 70 | 77 | 73 | Bilbao | 79 | 75 | 71 | 67 | 77 | 71 | Di Maggio | 82 | 75 | 65 | 65 | 73 | 68 | Bystrom | 79 | 76 | 72 | 68 | 75 | 72 | McCarthy | 81 | 74 | 70 | 67 | 80 | 75 | Schumacher | 79 | 69 | 72 | 66 | 75 | 70 | Anuar Aziz | 81 | 71 | 72 | 68 | 78 | 73 | Bellis | 78 | 75 | 75 | 68 | 80 | 71 | Kinoshita | 81 | 77 | 73 | 72 | 80 | 77 | Caruso | 78 | 77 | 68 | 69 | 76 | 71 | Flügel | 81 | 74 | 69 | 72 | 79 | 67 | Roy | 78 | 65 | 74 | 62 | 68 | 73 | Gautier | 80 | 77 | 72 | 68 | 76 | 72 | Landa | 78 | 69 | 65 | 69 | 70 | 69 | Ulissi | 80 | 75 | 76 | 66 | 83 | 71 | Waeytens | 78 | 73 | 70 | 71 | 72 | 70 | Zaini | 80 | 70 | 66 | 66 | 74 | 65 | Palini | 78 | 74 | 69 | 70 | 75 | 68 | Hugenhaben | 80 | 66 | 73 | 77 | 77 | 76 | Reichenbach | 78 | 69 | 71 | 73 | 76 | 69 | Vogt | 80 | 61 | 73 | 62 | 78 | 71 | Paulinho | 77 | 75 | 67 | 75 | 70 | 72 |
You see that the 3 former winners should be the men to beat here, with slight advantages for Froome. The opponence though won't sleep, and if it's a race like most of the others then it will be an uphill drag race decided by the hill stat in first hand, and the acceleration stat in second. But will there be a different option? Here is kind of a power-ranking for different possible race scenarios:
The Top 5 favourites for an uphill drag race:
Froome
Kinoshita
Di Maggio
McCarthy
Gautier
The Top 5 favourites for a very tough race over the climbs:
Kinoshita
Froome
van der Hugenhaben
Flügel
Anuar Aziz
The Top 5 favourites for a race with heavy crosswinds:
Ulissi
Kinoshita
Froome
van der Hugenhaben
Bellis
The Top 5 long rage attackers:
van der Hugenhaben
Preidler
Yates
Lövkvist
De Maar
The Top 5 slow-race punchy sprinters:
Kump
Reimer
Ulissi
Vastaranta
McEvoy

Hey, we're in this one! We pretty much exclusively riding C2 races this year in what was an attempt (a failed one) to consolidate points, but we had to leave a couple of C1 races in there for our regional races.
Obviously no ambitions except to get in breakaways and show the team colors!

Froome has won this race and it's a win goal, so hopefully we will finally win something this season. Overall anything but a win is acceptable and I wouldn't say it is impossible to win here. This race is quite worth a lot of money, so fingers are crossed

Always fun to race at home but seeing how Byström have preformed this season I dont expect much here.
But we still hope he can deliver somewhat close to top 10 and Lövkvist/Reimer top 25 would be really nice. |

All your previews are so informative and in-depth!
I have a bad feeling for this race because Ulissi didn't seem to be among the very best in hilly finishes. That said, the fact PCM shows us as favorites even above Meiji makes me hope!

Hoping for a top 10 for Waeytens with better support than in the previous hill classics, but it will be hard.
Changed my sig, this was getting absurd.

Really need a good race again if I want to be in the promotion fight still, so here's hoping Bilbao and Kump will deliver!
Really not sure what to expect here, but atleast one of them sneaking into 10 would be nice, with another 2-3 riders top 30.
Super-stacked field though, so Bilbao not even among the first page of puncheurs is worrying, although different factors should play in besides the hillstat.

As a home race it'll be fun to race. Also it'll be our first failed goal of the season.

C1 hilly classic means we're led by Palini once again, no expectations then with his bad back-ups so just hoping for an exciting race. I'm picking Froome or Kinoshita to win.
Thanks for the super detailed preview Croatia!

Looking at the startlist it seems very likely a) anything can happen b) minimum half of the teams won't be pleased with the result.
We don't necessarily need a 2014-like performance by Di Maggio, but at least something to forget about the disappointment from last year.
Thanks for the preview, Croatia!

No way my team can do something good in this race...
Vogt does not have the acceleration needed to be able to make differences for other cyclists, also do not believe that the race ends with a large group where McEvoy can be included.
Therefore I think that a place in the top 15 is already quite good, but this pcm never ceases to amaze us so we will wait to see

According to the preview, lets hope the race is very tough over the hills Hoping to win obviously, but Froome/Di Maggio/Ullissi will be tough competition.

I'm very sorry for the quality of screenshots of this race, especially in the 2 final kilometers. While checking the report I found out that many were corrupt and unusable, so I hope the text coverage can halfway make up for that.
Shame on me here...

I can say that most of us didn't expect this kind of result. Not surprised we didn't manage to take home a win goal with us, but yet another 4th place in a classic for Froome. Really hope this will get better, otherwise we could well enough lose out on the Top 10. I'm starting to get the feeling we won't win anything this season, because the game always select the not obvious winner.
Oh well, let's move on

Well... We are a Swedish team with 4 Swedes in this race riding in their homecountry and what do they do?
NOTHING!
Searching really well I could find our shirt in some pictures with a few kms left.
This season is not going anywhere close to what I had planned and looking at the season previews not what others thought either...
But congrats to the winners and thanks for the report. |

It's results like these I love, expecting a top 20 from Palini but he goes and picks up a 7th place for the team.
Congrats Eden, really happy to see your guys take it after a lot of bad luck you've had. And of course thanks for the report Croatia, np about the screenshots, it's still wonderfully done.

Kewl! First classic podium of the season. Great result against most of the top PCT-punchers for Di Maggio and a promising sign regarding our upcoming key race in the Czech Republic.
Gratz to eden! Indosat had moments of tough luck the first half of the season and really earned a victory like that.
Thanks, croatia for the well-written report! Like the way you keep up the tension... as if any second something crucial is about to happen.

Well, with how small the break was it's no surprise we couldn't make it. A waste of two races days, but I always feel the obligation to give a few regional races for the guys. It's not like the C2 races have had good results anyway.
