The Tour of Eritrea is part of the climbing prone HC Band 1, which is one of two PCT only bands. So the very best of just one division will be at the start here.
It`s only the 4th edition with Gomez Marchante, Marquez and Kwiatkowski most recently are the 3 winners so far. This shows what kind of rider you need to be. A climber surely but also some puncheur skills as the race contains both - shorter and longer climbs.
So far no African was able to win and Kwiatkowski for the Kenya AÃrways team was already a huge step into that direction. But in especially as there is an Eritrean team in PCT, the wish is huge to see them winning.
Berhane as the best Eritrean stage racer is obviously again at the start for Eritel and after 4th in 2014 and 9th in 2015, he surely wants to get the win here or at least a podium. Support for him will be good by his fellow Eritrean Teklehaimanot or Eritrean National Champion Amanuel on all terrains.
Though the competition will be huge this season. Probably better field than ever before.
The big favourite due to his climbing skills is Amador. Easily the best climber of the division and actually one of the very best in whole cycling. His allround skills are pretty good as well.
Aside of Berhane, some riders will really challenge him though. Ricco as great climber but also great puncheur might be the biggest thread as also Monsalve or Cunego, who have great experience from last years PT racing.
There are couple more riders, who will be here to challenge for the podium. But who is this in especially?

The list also shows the best puncheurs in the race. Some obviously clash, which make them a great rider for that race such as Roche or the mentioned Ricco and Cunego. Others are pure puncheurs and will not play a big role in the GC but could go for stage wins.
With 3 flat stages, it`s not a surprise to also see a nice amount of top sprinters here. Yet again Eritel belongs to the best here, which shows their ambition of a great performance.

Top 15 Lövkvist?
If he could gain anything at the hills he could with a great huddle of luck threaten close to top 10.
Otherwise we need some breakaway luck here or maybe Vedel Kvist can sprint good. |

Well...er... gosh... don't think we can expect much from this race. Chamorro will have a hard time repeating his Tachira heroics, and Forero will most likely be useless as usual, so maybe we can expect something from Barrio on the hilly stages?

We are literally only here because of the bands choice. Gonna be worst race for us all season. Hoping in something from Theuns that has been pretty good so far and in breaks from my very mediocre climbers but you know. Amador must have this? Ricco and Monsalve don't seem like particularly bad picks either.
EDIT: And now I realize I haven't sent Theuns here. In hindsight, good choice me

Well this is Amador's one race that I'm not the most ambitious about due to the lack of TT's and so many hills. If he can't pull out a bunch of time on the one big mountain stage, then I could see Ricco or Cunego easily winning this.
Thanks for the preview, I'm excited for this one.

Ricco or Cunego should do really well here. |

I can not see another winner than Amador, as to my team not quite know what to expect. this beginning of the season has not been very good but at least the top 10 was a goal that would like to achieve. Also on a good day Santos can try to discuss a stage victory, let's see how things will go.

With Amador the win condition got very hard..Basically Roche needs to limit his time loss in the Mountain stage and go for victory on the two hill stages. Despite having the best hill climber, Cunego and Ricco has better chances. Top 5 is the goal, all depends on the mountain stage. Hope Lavoine can take his first stage win here, he has 2 chances
Good luck everyone

Strong lineup here, but it could've been worse. With a good mountain stage, Kiserlovski can probably savely place himself in the top 10, which has to be the goal. Other than that I hope Nepmniachsniy can score some stage top 10s in the sprints.
Are we getting a January rankings update btw? |

Fingers crossed for the UBS stress test, Amador race days are the most valuable in PCT. Would be a good sign for even better suited races if he can perfom well in Africa.
Good choice to get Ricco and Pinot on the bike, again. They're surely full of ambition to make up for the recent losses in Tachira.
Another fine read. Thanks for the detailed preview, roturn!

More likely after February as many teams didn`t even race yet and it`s not too hard after 1-2 races per team to rate the strong January teams. |

Modolo, Modolo, Modolo!
Indeed I hope he remembers he is a sprinter just in time and will come up with a stage win somehow. Just use your acceleration for christ's sake.
Vanendert could do well on the hilly stage too but since we don't play a role in GC I can shamelessley root for the Cobra and SN home squad.

The aim here would usually have to be a top 10 for Pinot, a top 25 for Yates and Petit being in the top 5 on the flat stages. However, after the TDU and Tachira I'll be happy no matter what provided Pinot doesn't crash or lose time randomly to weaker riders.
So I'll probably be disappointed. |

Ricco to make aidanvn happy? Amador surely has to deliver in this mountain stage, that used to produce only late attacks in the past. Wonder if we see another scenario like that this time.
Berhane obviously would be a nice winner on the honour roll here. Though I would also love to see guys like Ricco or Cunego to shine.

Hoping for a nice battle between Ricky Ricco and Cunego but I think it'll be for 2nd place cause Amador should dominate the mountain stage.

So here it is. Slagters first race as maxed.
Had bigger expectations before seeing the startlist here, Aberasturi to fight in the sprints and Slagter top 10 would continue my nice start to the season though.
Hoping to see an agressive Valverde in the breaks here!

Probably the only chance we have here is to make some trouble in the sprint stages or of course breakaway in the mountains. 13th for Gilanipoor in Vuelta al Tachira, but in this field I should be happy to see him in top 20.
Great to get this race underway. |

Let's see if we finally can win a GC... Is about time I guess, and much better chances we won't get, st least not this year. Come on Cunego
No hopes for the flat stages really, but perhaps we can feature in a break, or Polivoda can steal a random point somehow?

Amador should win comfortably unless Ricco can step it up a bit after Tachira, will be a good race nonetheless.
Another race for my team to most likely disappoint, only have to get through Eritrea and San Luis for us to finally 'start' our season.
