Giro d'Italia Discussion

Sad to see a team leader like Cattaneo injured in a GT. That really sucks.

Congrats to cio! Impressive to see Demare beat Van Stayen.

I'm also pretty happy that Formolo and Kangert are both steadily crawling up the GC standings with some strong rides lately.

At first I was annoyed by Dall'Oste and his "chasse patate", then I noticed he stole the KoM jersey that way! Nice work Daniele!
Changed my sig, this was getting absurd.

Had a bit of shocker there but in the break again so can't complain hopefully the next few days can see some points

It's really frustrating to have two guys well suited for breakaways (Campero 78MO and Novak 77MO), and then just see them do absolutely nothing. Tzortzakis is a complete waste of racedays here - I'll be surprised if he survives to sprint for at stagewin at some point now.

Campero, who was my GC "hope" lost 4 minutes here - Perhaps part of a crash somewhere? Novak however rode decently and was in the 38 man frontgroup (like he should be). And as quite a lot of other riders weren't he jumped from 28th to 21st, while Campero only lost one spot (to Novak).

So GC wise we have to be contend having two guys in the top 25. I would easily sacrifice one of them to go for some stages or the KOM instead, though. We are only ever mentioned when one of our riders decide to quit the race.

One of the stages why I did sent De Bie here but unfortunately injury makes his 21 race days a waste...one GT was for him anyway but this now looks awful for him. Being in the 3min group could at least mean he recovers a bit.

Olivier in first group is nice. In especially as 2-3 others were behind hence he climbed a bit. If only he could climb now a bit better.

Finally Demare! I feel like Demare vs Van Stayen H2Hs ae going to be a lot more common in the next few years if the French goes on to do some training Pfft

Gratz cio and thanks a lot for the quality reports so far to danny.

HA!! Cool

A victory three years in the making and worth probably a million in wages. Grin

Van Stayen's training has given me more sleepless nights than women ever did, so beating him on his specialty terrain in a direct head-to-head makes this even better.
Thanks everybody for the kind words!

I don't quite know yet what to do with Demare in the future, but for now stage-hunting in GTs seems to be ideal for him (at least it should avoid a Trofimov/Hagen clash more often than not). I hope this was just the first of many GT wins in a career to eventually go down in ManGame history.

Sadly we seem to have lost Felline in this stage, he would've provided valuable support in many stages and could've challenged for a Top 5 himself.
I would've liked to have that mentioned somewhere in the report as I only realized once I thoroughly checked the results and searched the page for his name.

Surely hoped for a stage win but second behind Demare is of course good as well. Congrats cio, Demare can of course win ONE stage as well Pfft

Dzamastagic did once again a fantastic job delivering Van Stayen in a great position despite being the only team mate in the first group and i thought Van Stayen would still get to the front and it was close.

What annoys me the most on this stage are the bonus points for Alarcon and Pluchkin. I have to win more points on them as 10 points on each of them on a stage like this is not enough when i want to carry the points jersey all the way.
A Big Thank You To All MG Reporters!

Thanks for another report, sgdanny. And there it was, the wunderkid goes one better than the great Van Stayen. Congrats, cio!

Good to see Guldhammer mixing it in the sprint, assuming he was meant to do a leadout for Holst Enger, who just ran out of gas. You could argue it was wasted energy, but at least he stayed safe. Hopefully he can continue his great form in the mountains the upcoming stages.

Thanks for the report sgdanny. I didn't expect the stage to be so selective, or that it would come to a sprint. Still Keukeleire on the podium is a great result, given that these hilly stages are why he is here. Wellens also staying where he needs to.

If you didn't already, you just got to love Kolesnikov by now; 4th after a crash is amazing. Hopefully he can turn his phenomenal form into a stage win on of these days!

Unfortunate that Kwiatkowski had a bad day and lost some time. He still has prospects of finishing around the top 15 though so there's still hope.

Same here. Would love to see him coming back and brag about his Giro top 30.

With almost halftime Manfredi, Pellaud and Penasa have already accumulated a good amount of kilometres in leading groups. Thanks to the teams involved, for giving our guys these opportunities!

I was worried how Henao will cope with these hilly stages, but the way it is at the moment, only stage 19 could see him losing times. Bring on the real mountains!

Another weird stage from us. I get that Juul-Jensen wants to go KoM-hunting, but really not getting the most out of his energy with these kinds of attack.
Another no show from Trentin in the sprint. Just weird, looking at that top 10. Might have something to do with Guarnieri being in the first group as well, but don't really get it.

Anyway, Van Staeyen back on track again. Congrats (again), knockout Smile

Good from Jensen in the break again hopefully one sticks soon as we always seem to be in them! thanks for the report

I count this as a win by Villella here as Van Stayen and Demare don`t count! Great to see him stepping up while De Bis injured.

De Bie in 21st at least seems to be almost at 100% again. Though as rated top favourite on that stage it still feels bad to have him wasted.

At least this might mean, the late 3rd week hill stages could see a fully healed De Bie then.

Van Stayen strikes back versus Demare, congratulations knockout. Surprising to see Villella in third, and then pretty much GC guys following close. Good to see Guldhammer safe again, and hopefully it hasn't costed any extra energy considering the two upcoming stages.

Speaking of the two upcoming stages, Alarcon needs to gap Pluchkin there if he's serious about the challenging for the overall win, I think. But on the other hand, it won't surprise anyone if Pluchkin just gaps him and everyone. Add Madrazo, and the trio should play it out for a couple of stage wins now, and it will certainly be fascinating to see who proves strongest.

Thank you for the report, sgdanny!

I feared the nature of the final would favor a breakaway win, so the important part is that that didn't happen, and the gap to Van Stayen was close enough to consider that another good performance by Demare.
A win and 3 second places in 10 stages already puts him past 200 points in the first half, and I hope the mountains coming up will hurt the flat sprinters enough to give him more shots later on this week.

I hope Nerz can break into the Top 10 in the next two stages now, especially stage 12 could give us big gaps.
