Race Profile

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/profiles/pt_strada.jpg

This race continues on the MG calendar for the seventh successive season and there has been one particular name dominating it for most of its existence. Having finished 2nd in the second edition way back in 2013, Sam Bewley has won this race on the next four editions. He is back this year to defend his crown. Also back is the runner-up to Bewley for the past two editions, Greg Van Avermaet, and a whole host of other top-tier cobbles riders.

The race itself has undergone a significant change in profile for this edition. The hill section is now much harder, with a series of sharp climbs rather a single one before the cobbles. The sheer length of this section gives a chance to the aggressive punchers to try to shed the cobbles specialists before the cobbles sections even arrive. The cobbles sections have been greatly reduced and is now only two long sections instead of the multiple smaller sections present earlier. Let's see if all these changes make an impact in the outcome of the race.

Despite all changes made to the profile, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_mos.png Bewley remains the favourite to win this race. Unless the punchers make life unbearable for everyone else in the inclines, Bewley's climbing abilities should see him comfortably stay safe in the pack till the cobbled sections arise. From there, he is the best in the world and the man to beat in any cobbled race.

Not anymore at his peak, but still considered among the best cobbles riders, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_evo.png Van Avermaet's strong puncher capabilities should ensure he remains fresher than most of his big rivals when the cobbles come around. He would be hoping to go one better than the runners-up finishes of the past two seasons.

Bewley's closest competitor in terms of pure cobbles ability is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_rbc.png Summerhill, and in fact a better puncher too. However, he is yet to match the exploits of his Kiwi counterpart and will be hoping to improve on his best finish of 3rd place in 2015.

Very strong on the cobbles but weaker on the slopes is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_tti.png Senechal, who will be hoping for a mild race till the pack reach the cobbled sections, from where he can come into his own. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_vlv.png Stallaert, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_gzl.png Teunissen and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_afr.png Kamyshev are in a similar mould, with the latter being slightly more powerful on the cobbles.

Two more well-rounded competitors for this race are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_akm.png Trentin and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_kul.png Baugnies, who should be more comfortable with a higher pace on the hills, and possess enough of a punch on the cobbles to make an impact. Baugnies rides this race for wildcard entry Kulczyk.

The best puncher among the favourites is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ebd.png Gerts, who will be hoping his team can cause damage to the better cobblers on the hills, and he would be waiting to take advantage of the same.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_grg.png Wisniowski, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_des.png Altur and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_fes.png Daniel should be in the hunt for a Top 10 position, and could also be looking at a Top 5 on a good day.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_iso.png Polanc will be hoping his stamina can help him outlast better cobbles riders in this lengthy race.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_hug.png Kristoff will be hoping to survive the hills and cobbles as along with Bewley, he is the fastest finisher and will look to take advantage in case the race comes down to a bunch sprint.

The riders mentioned above are weaker than the favourites, but could look to use their combination of skills to outlast and out-perform the latter.

I'll admit it: for a little while, I was considering to send Herklotz Pfft

Declerq should love this more than any other cobbled classic, which likely will only increase the margin for disappointment. Top 20 would be nice though.

I really hope the AI makes this fun, it's a great idea.

ember
Previously there hasn't been much going on on the hill/mountain, but if that turns here with the new course, it's definitely in favour of Trentin, I think. Hopefully it makes his chase for a podium even more realistic, eventhough it looks difficult to beat anyone of Bewley, Summerhill and GVA on such a course.

Obviously Bewley is the massive favourite, like in any classic with cobbles. How many of those have he actually lost in the past four seasons? Pfft

jandal7
Hope these fellas enjoy the last years without Debesay here Pfft Cheering for Polanc and GVA, hope the former could use some MON influence if the AI goes well (and it's there Pfft)
24/02/21 - kandesbunzler said “I don't drink famous people."
15/08/22 - SotD said "Your [jandal's] humour is overrated"
11/06/24 - knockout said "Winning is fine I guess. Truth be told this felt completely unimportant."

Probably a race I should have sent Boom to with the amount of hills. That said, probably it`s the better cobblers anyway and 2rd too much for him.

No expectiations but maybe for once having a breakaway of Bovenhuis or Van Hooydonck and this way a lucky top20.

tastasol
Our first race on the cobbles for the season, so hope to see Wisniowski getting a good start. Excited to see how the hills will affect the race. With all the cobbles coming so late in the race, it could surely have been a race very well suited to the puncheurs, but no big names this time at least.

If any of my team riders can finish the race by winning points I'll be happy, 65cob for our best rider says it all

Really surprised that no teams took the risk of sending a top puncheur here to see if he could attack from far on the hills and then pray to hang on the cobbles

Well, Jull-Jensen is there (78 hil, 70 cob), but being a wildcard team that's not taking a huge risk Pfft

There is this Edvald Boasson Hagen lad. I think he is quite good? Pfft

Im missing the puncheurs in the preview a bit. I think the massive amount of climbs will impact the racing quite a lot. And while this might be the one race where Greg has the biggest advantage over Bewley it is also the one where he can lose the most as im not sure whether the break can be controlled or if big name puncheurs could stay away. Luckily not too many of those are attending.

Im scared but hope this will be the start of a great month for me.
A Big Thank You To All MG Reporters!

Yeah... but he also only has 55 in cobbles. Anyway EBH doesn't know how to win PT classics anymore

Why not just cancel all the cobble races this year? That would be great

Yap. That said, maybe Edmondson scores some minor points for us though.

I'm kinda hoping JJ can attack early and somehow do well here, just for fun. This is effectively my Roma Maxima squad with a couple of differences, so it's second tier thanks to the De Panne clash. I can't expect anything for Nolf surely, so it's really just a warmup.

Of course with my luck this will probably be the one cobbled race I score in all year since I can't get points from it. Pfft

Very curious to see what the pack will look like once they hit the cobbles.

I might have to consider Potts my leader here. But if Teunissen can somehow hang on he's definitely a top 10 contender.

Somehow missed that the profile was changed Pfft

Do not know what to expect from Stallaert now, but one thing is certain we need points a lot of them.

I really hope all my cobble riders will survive the hilly part of this race.

Great to see Gerts in the first group and another good result for my team in Italy this year after Boswell in Tirreno and Grosu in Sanremo. Decent result by Van der Velde as well.
