Vuelta al Pais Vasco
Welcome to the Vuelta al Pais Vasco! With a TTT, ITT and 4 hilly stages (2 summit finishes), the race will likely come down to whoever can excel in both hilly stages and against the clock.
| 1st | 2nd | 3rd | 2007 | Rinaldo Nocentini | Levi Leipheimer | Alberto Contador | 2008 | Mario Aerts | Danilo Di Luca | Pierrick Fédrigo | 2009 | Alexander Efimkin | Edvald Boasson Hagen | Tom Danielson | 2010 | Luis Leon Sanchez Gil | Samuel Sánchez Gonzalez | Fränk Schleck | 2011 | Yuri Trofimov | Joaquin Rodriguez | Samuel Sánchez Gonzalez | 2012 | Robert Gesink | Jan Bakelants | Luis Leon Sanchez Gil | 2013 | Robert Gesink | Yuri Trofimov | Fränk Schleck | 2014 | Yuri Trofimov | Nicolas Roche | Edvald Boasson Hagen | 2015 | Tejay Van Garderen | Edvald Boasson Hagen | Yuri Trofimov |
Trofimov, Gesink and Van Garderen all line up as past winners here and the former two both must be interested in becoming the first rider to win this race 3 times. Hagen is also here once more, intent on finally finishing on the top step of the podium.
Favourites: | HL | TT | ACC | TTT | | HL | TT | ACC | TTT | Hagen | 85 | 72 | 79 | 67 | Gastauer | 82 | 66 | 76 | 72 | Bakelants | 84 | 67 | 78 | 67 | Gesink | 81 | 80 | 68 | 73 | Trofimov | 83 | 77 | 76 | 76 | De Bie | 81 | 72 | 75 | 69 | Ginanni | 83 | 65 | 74 | 73 | Schreurs | 81 | 66 | 74 | 73 | Claeys | 83 | 64 | 73 | 68 | Sagan | 80 | 68 | 76 | 67 | Skujins | 83 | 59 | 76 | 63 | Lutsenko | 80 | 68 | 81 | 71 | Bobridge | 82 | 77 | 80 | 78 | Pichon | 79 | 64 | 76 | 72 | Kelderman | 82 | 70 | 72 | 70 | Bilbao | 79 | 63 | 75 | 68 | Van Garderen | 82 | 69 | 79 | 75 | Koretzky | 79 | 61 | 79 | 75 |
*TTT is the average TT stat of the team
Trofimov and Bobridge are pretty much the two best riders here, both can time trial and climb and have great TTT teams behind them, the former is slightly better on the hills while the latter has better TTT support.
2-time winner Gesink can TT better than both of them, but he isn’t as good a puncheur and the TTT squad behind him isn’t quite a strong as that of the two favourites.
Kelderman and Van Garderen too are both decent time trialists, who are good outside bets for the win, especially as the American won last year.
Hagen and Bakelants are the two best puncheurs here and it’s hard to underestimate either for the win, but they’ll have a lot on their hands making up lost ground in the TTT, meaning Hagen will have a hard time finally winning here after three past podiums.
There are plenty of other good puncheurs here though, and any one of them can contend the win, Ginanni, Claeys, Skujins and Gastauer are on par with the best puncheurs but lack TT strength and support, so they’ll have a difficult time winning the race, but are definitely worth watching.

This looks like it could be a very hard-fought race between a decent variety of riders - just like it was in the recent years
Personally, I believe it will be hard to match Trofimov's consistency, but Bobridge, TVG, EBH and maaaybe Gesink might be next in line here.
Nice preview, looking forward to the racing.

Bilbao mentioned on the fav. list - Nice!
Hoping for an offensive showing from my team here. Couldnt bring my best team here due to the clash with that random german race, but on the other hand it makes it possible for Bilbao to lead at his true home - the basque country. Region bonus would have come in handy here
Wonder if the hilly stages will suit the pure puncheurs or some climbers to steal the show again.

I get an eery feeling when neither Koretzky nor Coppel are mentioned in the preview.
I have the best possible TTT setup here when taking out Koretzky. I also hope that Coppel can win the ITT and do a decent GC. I guess that this can go both ways.

Key race. Somehow lost faith in our TTs, but there is no excuses for the TT and also BBobridge has a perfect setup here.. podium minimum.

Will be a nice race to follow, maybe outloaning (too RBC) Haugard Jensen can show himself in a break or so.
He have already scored some pts with a good season opener in Badaling at 22nd place. |

A nice opening TTT would be great and hopefully Cataford can do something in the TT regards the hilly stages we have many options but Houle on the easier stages for the sprint could be a good one but Boily and Pichon in the harder stages can hopefully get near the top 10 |

Those time trials bothered me a lot during planning and I considered heavily to not send Skujins here. In the end Van Stayen made the difference as he can cover other races but would suck here (as seen last season) but I'm not too over-confident that my results will continue here.
Bobridge and Trofimov are clear favourites for me as well.
A Big Thank You To All MG Reporters!

Nice preview trekbmc, this is our hardest goal of the season (win), so I have send the best squad possible to support Trofimov.

This was the embarassing part of race planning where I got it all wrong and thought it was two individual time trials. Our TTT line up is normally very weak, but here it's even weaker. Add the ITT, and the overall win must be out of reach for EBH. A podium will also be difficult, meaning a stage win or two must be the goal, and then challenge for a top 5 overall. It's a big ask, but fingers are crossed!
Difficult to look past Trofimov for the GC. Bobridge possibly a dark horse here, assuming he gets a head start with the TTT. Should be an intense race to follow!
Thank you for the preview, trekbmc. Especially enjoyed the TTT stat posted for the favourites. |

Interesting race. Obviously we don't have a rider who can challenge for a top GC position, but still there's plenty of opportunity for us to score some points. I hope to see a very active Ginanni.

Top 7-10 please. TTT setup is not great but okay. De Bie can also TT a bit himself to limit his loss in hte ITT.
Then he needs to be aggressive in the hills to gain time on some others. |

With Red Bull without a favorite there are several good stages for Hansen to join breakaways.

I'm quite sure Trofimov will take yet another GC to his taly for this season, knowing that his team got a good TTT squad and the best puncher with TT skills. Will be interesting to see who is the best puncher though, as I'm sure we won't see a hidden mountain stat here

Thanks for all the support, but I don't know, the fact that Gesink, Ignatiev, Hagen, Sicard and Bakelants have 01, 11, 21, 31 and 41 as start numbers looks scary to me!

Shit there are some strong TTT squads here. I think we should do alright there but Lutsenko will probably need a bit of luck to hit the top 10 overall. Generally an interesting race this one.

Eh.
Skujins, Claeys and Ginanni should be beatable with the TT, while Gesink should be stronger. So we're aiming for a lower Top 5 which means 8th at best...
