Grands Prix Cyclistes Discussion

Grands Prix Cyclistes

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/profiles/c1/gpc_mg.png

Following the decision of the race organisators to join the already well-known two GPs, a new atypical 2-days stage race took their place instead: it’s the Grands Prix Cyclistes we are talking about.

Before this season, 4 editions of each classic have been raced and 8 different riders stood on the top step of the podium, last being pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/bup.png Betancourt, who is also present this year among the favourites, and Pozdnyakov.

Both the stages will be raced in a circuit, respectively around Quebec City and Montreal, and both will be more than 200 kms long. The only difference can be found in the type of finale: in fact, while the first stage finishes uphill, the latter will give the riders an opportunity to breathe after the ascent, and thus will finish downhill. Nonetheless, many riders are theoretically capable of winning it, in fact all will depend on how hard the teams will make the race.

But let’s take a look at the startlist to know more about this:

These riders are the most likely to win should the peloton complicate the race since the first stage: they are the better puncheurs of the field. Nonetheless, most of them should make a move from far out if they want to win, as in most of the cases they are not really good sprinters at all.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/vtb.png Di Maggio proved to be the best puncher of the division when on his day and he should never be counted out from the favorites. The Italian however has been quite flukey so far.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/boi.png McCarthy has been far more solid, and has beaten him directly in quite some races already. The same can be said for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/pum.png Kelderman; the Dutchie has been beyond the expectations already this year winning some races against some fierce opponents, will he add this one to his palmares as well?

Two of the most dangerous riders should it come to a very tight sprint in the first stage definitely are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/gzl.png Pozzato and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/pum.png Felline.

In case the race won't be made too hard, the riders at the right, the sprinters, will have easy life. Riders like pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ken.png Impey especially, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/pum.png Demare, proved to be capable of resisting to the attacks of some much stronger punchers on paper. Less fast riders like pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/sbp.png Reimer, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/bup.png Ventoso and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/kar.png McEvoy shouldn't be underestimated either anyway.

Besides the punchy sprinters, we shouldn't forget the kinds who can't really rely on a single skill, but who are often let go by the peloton. In case they should somehow gain some seconds in one of the 2 stages, riders such as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/bpo.png Wallays, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/rge.png Haas and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/sbp.png Hermans, could surprise everyone and win themselves an unexpected spot in the top 10.

Simon MIGHT be able to do something but the field might be a bit too strong for him

We need points but this race will be hard to get them in, got to hope that Stachowiak joins a break or Zeits or someone does something special and finishes top 5/podium in one stage.

Thanks for the preview Matt. Grin

Excited for this. Shoud be a good one for Meyer and Juul-Jensen.

Obviously a super strong field but that was to be expected with awesome PPRD numbers available.
LLS has to put a solid performance here since its one of the last chances for much needed points.

Sent a super strong team here with Declerq the weakest puncheur at 72, so I hope we'll start relaying in the latter parts of the stages so that all of our riders are in the front over those sharp hills and we can benefit from splits.

Besides a good team result in the GC through that, Kelderman needs to show again that he knows when to attack so that we at least don't drop points against Kenya and Evonik (unlike Britain FFS...).

Oh btw Matt, Kelderman sadly is Dutch Pfft

(Honest talk: breakaways to win both stages. Fuck me silly.)

Really nice preview Matt! Smile

Hoping to get some points out of this, we got a lot of different riders here that can score some points.

Will be interesting how the first stage will end...

FroomeDog99
Ben Nasser and Impey here again for us, like in Britain. If they are half as successful here as there we will have a good race...

Thanks for the preview matt.

Thanks for the detailed preview, matt!
I actually believe Di Maggio can be successful here. These are pretty much the only of many race days in September we can be better than our average... despite the fierce competition.

With this crazy startlist, its looking like we wont be getting many points to help us with our promotion battle

Hoping that Jukka will finally get rewarded for the offensive racing he have shown of late and make full use of his finishing abilities in Montreal.

Sent Boily here and 4 other Canadians for our home race Boily has been on fire recently so if that continues our promotion push could still be on

I do not have high hopes for this race but you never know what the double Vakoc and McEvoy be able to do

Nice preview matt!

Sent a strong team (79, 77, 77, 76, 75, 75, 74, 73) here because this tour definitely suits my riders. The start-list is packed with elite puncheurs though, so bringing home a good amount of points will definitely be a challenge. Still a major opportunity to gain PpRD on Aegon. Hope either Monfort or Pozzato has the form to do something impressive in this race.

Just to note that I posted the preview too early forgetting ToB was still going, and considering most of the top contenders are racing both, I will wait for it to finish first. Sorry for that! Embarassed
