Welcome to the 11th edition of the Strada Appia Antica race. One of the most unique races in the MG calendar due to it being a mixture between a hilly and flat cobbled race. What makes it more interesting is that the two terrains are separated. The first 3/4 of the race is hilly with 8 notable climbs of varying lengths. The last 1/4 is flat, or at least flatter with mostly false flat and 2 long and difficult cobbled sectors.
Let's look at some of the favourites:
| FL | MO | HI | ST | RS | CB | SP | AC | Wisniowski | 80 | 69 | 71 | 75 | 76 | 83 | 73 | 76 | Gerts | 77 | 66 | 78 | 76 | 80 | 82 | 72 | 70 | Pedersen | 77 | 63 | 69 | 78 | 80 | 82 | 78 | 77 | Per | 79 | 68 | 70 | 74 | 75 | 81 | 74 | 74 | Summerhill | 77 | 65 | 72 | 75 | 71 | 82 | 69 | 72 | Theuns | 72 | 67 | 74 | 76 | 73 | 80 | 77 | 76 | Senechal | 75 | 61 | 67 | 79 | 74 | 82 | 69 | 74 | Kasperkiewicz | 76 | 66 | 74 | 75 | 77 | 81 | 59 | 67 | Teunissen | 76 | 61 | 67 | 77 | 73 | 81 | 67 | 69 |
Wisniowski has won this race the last 2/3 times. The Pole has no real weak point in his stats, so many ways to triumph for a 3rd time. Gerts would love to have some hills in the finale, but he'll have to make best use of his improved cobble stat which now makes him one of the strongest riders. If it comes down to a sprint finish then Pedersen is the biggest favourite. We'll see if he can ride 'smartly' enough. Per's stats don't blow you away, but he's a dangerous rider if he can follow the right moves. 2020 race winner Summerhill is declining, but is still amongst the worlds best on the stone cobbles. Theuns finished 2nd last year, like Pedersen he has a sprint advantage over the others. Senechal seems to be a rider that disappoints more often than not, he'll need to conserve his energy on the climbs. Kasperkiewicz is by far the slowest rider of the favourites, the 'easier' finish doesn't suit him. Teunissen is mostly in the same boat.
| FL | MO | HI | ST | RS | CB | SP | AC | Trentin | 73 | 59 | 73 | 74 | 69 | 80 | 74 | 74 | Debesay | 75 | 67 | 74 | 75 | 79 | 79 | 69 | 78 | Altur | 75 | 62 | 70 | 75 | 70 | 82 | 72 | 68 | Kamyshev | 77 | 57 | 65 | 81 | 75 | 82 | 66 | 60 | Zepuntke | 72 | 56 | 69 | 79 | 72 | 82 | 72 | 65 | Tiller | 74 | 65 | 70 | 76 | 75 | 78 | 74 | 73 | Spengler | 74 | 58 | 66 | 74 | 73 | 83 | 61 | 70 | Polanc | 72 | 74 | 73 | 78 | 73 | 78 | 67 | 75 | Van Hooydonck | 73 | 63 | 71 | 75 | 74 | 80 | 61 | 72 | Neilands | 77 | 56 | 69 | 74 | 73 | 78 | 71 | 67 | Gamper | 77 | 62 | 66 | 77 | 77 | 78 | 63 | 71 |
Trentin is one of the weaker riders when it comes to FL and MO stat, but he's pressure free here as a wildcard. Debesay lacks the pure CB stat, but if he can hang on with his acceleration he could deliver a good result. Altur is the opposite as his lower acceleration often seems to leave him behind in the crucial stages of a race. Kamyshev and Zepuntke are similarly bad climbers. One is strong on the flat, the other has a bit of a sprint, but both would probably be happy with a top 10 result. Tiller probably can't follow the best cobbler so it's just about holding on and then sprinting to as high a placing as possible. Spengler would probably want a lot more kms of cobbles to work in strength. While most of these riders might be content with a top 10 result, Polanc is a proven darkhorse in this race with his climbing prowess.

Zepuntke getting mentioned as an outsider is more than we could have dreamed of If the first part of the race is rather slow and he has a great day, he could do something decent, but in general he definitely shouldn't be one of the main contestants here. Good luck to all, and thanks for the nice preview, red!

Go Debesay as always

Perfect race for Polanc. 3rd last year, top 6 in each of the last four editions. Would love to see a repeat performance here!

Just a fun race for fun! Hopefully we'll get some distraction from the disappointment in Guadalupe

Florian Senechal was 7th in 2020 and 6th in 2021, so I guess top-5 is next!

Excited for this one, for obvious reasons! Let’s get that win sooner rather than later, really hope Wisniowski can shine after a very rough triple header and an unlucky monument performance in Sanremo.
Tactics wise, I hope the pace on the hills will be controlled, and then everything opens up when they get to the cobbles. That should suit Wisniowski, but also many others of the favourites here.
Looking forward to the report! |

Not the race best suited for Pedersen, but hopefully he can survive the climbs. If not, we should have some riders that's well suited to the more hilly parcours.

Once again not a single rider manage to make the top 50. I know my cobblers aren't great, but 77-76-75 with decent backup stats... The 77 one didn't even make it to top 100.
It's never good to have no expectations and still be dissapointed, but it is kinda what happens. We delivered the same nonsense in Franceville, and with an additional 4 cobbled races coming up shortly we could be way down in the rankings again. Unfortunately.

7th place for Polanc is slightly below expectations but with Neilands also finishing top 25, Kulppi finishing top 50 and us being part of the breakaway, I'm absolutely fine with the result.

Great race for us! Didn't expect us to actually be one of the chasing teams, but seems like we helped out quite well, while also keeping Zepuntke near the front in the mountains. He was always positioned around the middle in the group of favourites, but I assume the climbing drained him just a bit too much to really compete on the cobbles. Definitely very happy with a tenth place though, although it doesn't bring in a lot of points and everybody else is far outside the top-50. Great win for Tinkov, congratulations.
And thanks a lot for a fantastic report, redordead

Why not the win? Congrats Oleg, Senechal super strong at the end today.
Good race for us as well. Very happy with a podium in a race that's not the most suited to Pedersen. Also his first major result on the cobbles, if I'm not mistaken.
Good depth as well, with five more guys in the top 50 (and even Stokbro on loan for Aker also nicely up there). Nice way to start the PT classics on cobbles.
Thanks for the report, redordead. Enjoyed it!

Solid race from Debesay. It just seems we can't catch a break. 14th isn't dismal, but it's definitely less than we need atm.
Great antics by Tinkoff to catch the break and launch Senechal for a brilliant victory. Congrats. Oleg.
Beautiful report as well, red, thanks for that!

Eh. Wildcard's gonna wildcard. It was a fun race for us. I love that Guldhammer hung onto the peloton longer than Trentin. That may support some very bold choices we've made in planning this season. We shall see.
Congrats to Tinkoff - love to see Senechal living up to his potential for once!

Congratulations, Tinkoff!
Not the race we hoped for, unfortunately. Depth was good, but with the top result from Wisniowski messing, we got less than we hoped for.
Really hope we can catch a win moving forward. Wisniowski was after all signed to win on the cobbles, and so far, we’re struggling to do just that. |
