Welcome to the 14th edition of the Chrono des Phinney, I mean Herbiers. Herbiers! If there was ever a simple and straightforward preview to write then this is it. The time-trial specialists take on a 48 km course that is pretty much flat. Climbing ability shouldn't really factor here. It's all about who has the best legs on both days and cuts through the wind the fastest.
With that said let's look at some of the favourites:
| FL | MO | TT | RS | | FL | MO | TT | RS | Phinney | 73 | 85 | 83 | 74 | Vorobev | 75 | 63 | 79 | 71 | Würtz | 77 | 67 | 82 | 78 | Dal Col | 71 | 58 | 79 | 72 | Vlatos | 72 | 52 | 81 | 71 | Cattaneo | 70 | 82 | 79 | 80 | Paillot | 70 | 70 | 80 | 74 | Powless | 72 | 77 | 78 | 74 | Sütterlin | 71 | 59 | 80 | 77 | Balloni | 73 | 60 | 78 | 71 | Yatsevich | 70 | 55 | 80 | 81 | Leung | 73 | 57 | 78 | 77 | Sergent | 78 | 64 | 79 | 72 | Kukrle | 72 | 68 | 78 | 74 | Hepburn | 71 | 64 | 79 | 77 | Atkins | 75 | 54 | 78 | 75 | Taaramäe | 73 | 83 | 79 | 77 | Van Niekerk | 76 | 61 | 78 | 75 |
Taylor Phinney is the top dog. The American has won this event the past 5 years! Can he make it 6 in a row? He is not unbeatable though, just ask Würtz. The Dane got the better of him in Norway and is coming in as the main challenger. Vlatos has never made it on the podium in this event. His best result is 4th from last year. Paillot, Sütterlin and Yatsevich are all tied for 80 TT. So don't be surprised if one of them ends up on the podium.
Aegon bring the duo of  Sergent and Hepburn in the hope of scoring some important ranking points. Vuelta winner Taaramäe spends two of his precious race days here. Vorobev and Dal Col hope to add more depth scoring for Tinkoff. Cattaneo is another GC rider here who is very good against the clock.

Last year I still had three 79 TT riders, this year it's 78-77-77 so my hopes are not that high for an outstanding result. Let's see what this race brings. Thanks for the nice preview! |

So are we! We know it's possible to beat Phinney, but we need a good day from super Mads to get a win. Hopefully we should at least be on the podium, and then it's just fingers crossed for good legs on the day.
Thanks for the preview, redordead!

Brilliant comeback from MVN to go from outside the Top 20 to 12th!
24/02/21 - kandesbunzler said “I don't drink famous people."
15/08/22 - SotD said "Your [jandal's] humour is overrated"
11/06/24 - knockout said "Winning is fine I guess. Truth be told this felt completely unimportant."

Shame we couldn't quite keep the decent result from the first leg but Mano's 16th is still decent. Thanks for the report and congrats tastasol on beating Phinney! |

Brilliant 4th from Paillot here, I'm too used to underperformance to accept that 4th is about right from him and not be pleasantly surprised
Good ride from De Bod as well to contribute some useful points, and Affini making it into the top 50 adds to an all round successful race for us. Considering my fear of relegation going into the Tour, I think the next rankings update may have us almost 1000 points clear and fighting for 6th, which would be a huge success for this season. Thanks for a great report! |

Wow, what a race by Würtz. Phinney probably on a bad day on day 1, but to also beat him on day 2 it's a great achievement. Probably the best race of his life. Stunning, Mads!
Thanks for the report, redordead!

5th is slightly below what could have been expected here by Vlatos, but it's still a respectable result in the end.

This was a bit of a throwaway race for Taaramae. The RDs didnt add up nicely for him and i didnt want to send a Lopez-Taaramae duo to any race due to previous bad experiences so this was a bit of a no risk, low reward option to use the final two RDs. It was always more about the other race selections this would enable.
10th is pretty much exactly what i expected - i hoped he might have been able to get into the 6th-8th region with some luck but a terrible day 1 prevented that from happening. Kudus to Xandri and Navardauskas who delivered some solid performances.
Congrats tasta!
A Big Thank You To All MG Reporters!

Sütterlin finishes as expected, but the real story for us here is youngster Florian Stork with his strong second leg and an impressive 22nd overall!
Another surprise result in a TT-related race for an unmaxed rider (plus Politt's win), it's been a great stretch of racing for us in that regard lately.
Congrats to Grieg! I hope we can create a Würtz-Ganna rivalry in the future, but for now this is very much your terrain.
And thank you redordead for the report.

Thanks! I fear Ganna for the coming years, especially now that Herklotz looks like a rider who is finished with his training. He's proved already this season that he has a high level, so a maxed Ganna next year will be a tough one.
