Tour de l'Avenir Preview

Race Profile

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Races/U23/mg18_avenir.jpg

The Tour de l'Avenir is upon us once again and it brings a chance for the next generation of riders to strut their stuff in a peloton void of the experienced professionals. This is not to say that some of the riders on the startlist are not already experienced themselves!

The profile of this season's race starts off with a Prologue through the streets of Liege. We then head west and then southward, as the sprinters put their speed to the test in stages 2 and 3. We start stage 4 in Germany and go back to Belgium and the famous hills of Liege, the same ones used to host the fourth Monument every year. It's time for some harder hills, as we finish stage 5 up the slopes of La Planche. The climbing gets harder, as the riders tackle the high mountains on route from Pontcharra to La Chambre. The stage ends in a long downhill, which will test that particular skillset of the riders. Stage 7 is time for recuperation, and a final chance for the surviving sprinters to take another stage win. We ride from Ville-Morgon to Bourg-en-Bresse for a 52 km ITT on the penultimate stage, which is sure to shake up the GC. We end the race going up the challenging slopes of the Morzine, with three back to back climbs leading to the mountain top finish.

This race should have something for everyone. Let's see who the competitors are...

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ayu.png Ayubowan have brought a two-pronged attack of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ayu.png Ranaweera and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ayu.png Dulanjana to challenge for the overall GC win. While pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ayu.png Ranaweera is made for GC challenges, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ayu.png Dulanjana will be looking to be consistent throughout, and take advantage of his downhill skills on stage 6 and his energy stats.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_lpu.png Sam Oomen looks to be the strongest challenger to break the pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ayu.png Ayubowan domination attempt. Nearly identical skills to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ayu.png Ranaweera on the slopes with a slight disadvantage against the clock, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_lpu.png Oomen will need to ride a smart race and pick his moments perfectly.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_p4e.png Mark Padun, while being a strong climber, lacks the skill to match the competition against the clock, and is likely to lose a lot of time in the ITT.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ssc.png Gidich, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_cdb.png Eg, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_fes.png Fabbro, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_iso.png Novak and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_bnm.png Power are the other main challengers for the win. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_cdb.png Eg makes up for weaker ability on hills with a better TT than the rest. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_bnm.png Power is the only one among them to have weaknesses in both shorter climbs as well as in TTs.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_p4e.png Budyak is the best puncher in the list of favourites and will be looking at stages 4 and 5 to lay the foundation for his GC challenge.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_p4e.png Budyak is the best puncher in the field. Along with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ssc.png Gidich, he'll be hoping to make the hill stages selective so as to gain valuable time over his rivals.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ayu.png Ranaweera and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_lpu.png Oomen are quite good on the hills too, but lack the powerful that may prevent them from dropping their rivals.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ayu.png Kemboi is head and shoulders above anyone else in the field of sprinters. Having won two stages in last year's race, he's back and will be chomping at the bit to win some more.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ssc.png Hsu is the next best thing, with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_nvo.png Pedersen, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_mji.png Liu, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_zal.png Major, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_iso.png Kalaba and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_0r8.png Minali very similar riders. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_0r8.png Minali's disadvantage lies on the inclines, so he may have some trouble on the bumpy stage 3.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_mji.png Kuroeda and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_mji.png Zhao are the fastest off the blocks, and will look to use that to gain an advantage over their rivals when the sprint starts.

Once againpcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_ayu.png Kemboi is out ahead on his own in this category. He won the Prologue last year and will be looking to make it back to back wins.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_pum.png Ganna is the nearest challenger with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_pum.png Puma also having pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_pum.png Cavagna as a challenger.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_mji.png Zhao and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2018/Micro/mg18_bnm.png Scotson will definitely be targeting a stage podium here.

Disclaimer: The Tour de l'Avenir has been played in PCM 18 as a live test event for the switch of games that is currently being considered. The main jerseys of the teams have been converted to PCM 18 format, but the NCs and the equipment have not. Same is the case with other miscellaneous graphics paraphernalia that usually accompanies the MG.

Van der Poel only on the prologue list but I hope the game will also make him lead on the hilly sprint stages, which should suit him a bit. Surely should be stronger than Trakhov.

For GC Carboni with outside chances on a top10 maybe or top15.

GC fight between Oomen, Rranawera and Padun could be exciting while sprints/prologues are boring with Kemboi being a level ahead of the rest.

Ollfardh
Oof, think I missed Ranaweera when I first looked at the startlist. It will be hard for Oomen to beat him.
Changed my sig, this was getting absurd.

Guess I'll root for Ayubowan, Delvaux and Zalgiris! Major most likely to get some air time this race in the sprints.

Hoping for a big race for the joint Netia-Philips-Xero squads, though it seems our best stage hope is from none of those teams, go Morne on stage 8! Nibali and Pedersen should both be in amongst it for the wins if we don’t count Kemboi, whilst especially the “Xero” squad is built for the amazing climbing depth, KOM/stage chasing and teams classification, with Areruya maybe in it for a top 10 if he races well. Not the top quality guys but really excited by our two squads, but even more so to see PCM18 in action!

Let's see how this works on PCM18. Not much hopes from my riders, some breakaway would be fine, the hilly stage with too many candidates slightly better than Rodriguez and Dunbar, so nothing to happen there i'm afraid

Should be a fun race, wide open as well.

I've got to cheer for Oomen, hopefully Amezawa can do at least something for him. Ayubowan! has all kind of terrain covered with Kemboi and their GC guys. Will be interesting to see if they're also strong enough to take responsibility and make it predictable stages, or if we'll see some breakaway success.

Looking forward to see how this plays out on PCM 18.

Baterdene isn't a bad sprinter here...COuld get a couple of top 10s maybe..

Really looking forward to seeing how all the young boys go!!

For the first time I have someone, who can actually be expected to do something here so really looking forward to seeing Joni on the hills!

Otherwise hoping for as many breaks as possible.

Helping out the Puma riders is the goal, would be nice to see Goldstein/Bonnamour in a break, also really pleased seeing PCM18 being tested here, great idea and it should give a clearer picture over the whole debate.

Very proud to have a full team of guys here for the first time! Many of them probably won't end up maxing with me if I relegate, but still cool to have so many young riders in Carlsberg colors.

Eg's 1-3 last year put him in a great position to nab a top 10, so that's exciting. He will undoubtedly lose time on the hilly stages, but I'm hoping that he can stay in contention for those minor placings regardless. The team is fully backing him, no other engagements. Let's see how it goes!
