Lisbon Classic Discussion

Concluding the inaugural PTHC calendar, will be the Lisbon Classic with its 5th edition, after being a PT race before.
A battle between the present sprinters and daring attackers is to be expected on the bumpy roads around the Portuguese capital. In the last 4 years, it was twice an attacker taking glory and in the previous 2 seasons we could witness a sprint between the fast men.

2013Marcus BurghardtDaniel OssFilippo Pozzato
2014Filippo PozzatoSam BewleyTom Boonen
2015Dan HollowayAlexander KristoffJurgen Roelandts
2016Georgos TzortzakisMichael Van StayenJohn Degenkolb

In the first edition Pozzato reached the finish with Burghardt and Oss as companions, who proved to be stronger in the final sprint. The year after he did it better, when he attacked solo with 15 kilometres to go. The last two editions ended in a bunch sprint where Holloway and Tzortzakis came out on top. The only former winner present this season is pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/frs.png Pozzato, but it is unlikely that he will be in contention like in his glorious days.
Biggest name on the startlist is arguably world champion pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/mos.png Bewley, who has despite three participations, never won this race. Something he surely wants to add to his long list of achievements.

Also the present PCT teams will try to be competitive. If it comes down to a mass sprint keep an eye on pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/kmm.png Mark Cavendish, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/fab.png Erik Mohs and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/t3a.png Caleb Ewan.
Hillsprint hybrids pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/iso.png Marko Kump and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/vsa.png Nick Van der Lijke will try to make their strength on rising roads count.

Biggest names of the hill specialists are pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/gzl.png Francesco Ginanni and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/vsa.png Ben Gastauer. They will need to try to force selections on the many hills the route passes, if they want to have a chance to win this race. Another very dangerous man is Evonik's number 2 pcmdaily.com/files/Micros17/evo.png Greg Van Avermaet. He has shown in other races, that he can shine on this type of profile.

Above you see a short overview of the remaining high profile names that will take part at the Lisbon Classic. They are mostly cobblers with spare race days. With their skills on the flat and high stamina, they might as well try to join some moves to prevent the race from going into a sprint.

Let's see if Van Asbroeck has one last overperformance in him Wink
Changed my sig, this was getting absurd.

This should be a great race, as it's one of those few races that is borderline stuff for sprinters, despite being ranked as a flat race. Fingers crossed Kristoff gets a good daily form, making him capable of a top 5, which must be our goal here.

Hopefully Trentin will have a free hand as well, despite Kristoff's presence, as the hope is to see him join the fun if dangerous riders attack in the final kilometers.

Really curious to see how this one plays out this season. Kind of impossible to point at a big favourite for such a race, which is great and should make for entertaining stuff. Thank you for the previiew, and looking forward to the report! Smile

It'll be fun supporting Kump and Boekmans but I think we all know that Dzamamagic will take this cleanly. Cool

Well, obviously not amongst the favorites, but there's at least a chance for either Saber or Vanspeybrouck/Wohler to do something notable. Would be really cool if Saber can continue with his great performances most recently.

Kinda missing Goss now Sad He used to Top-5 this race for Oz!

Thanks for a pretty cool preview.

Zakarin, I know you can!

Not big expectations, but I do hope we can see Rowe and Wisniowski near the top. The rolling terrain should be good for them, especially the latter. He's been succesfull with late attacks previously this season, so hopefully another try here.

Classy preview, thanks Bikex!

We haven't got many chances here, so it's all about woefully hoping our direct opponents don't get overly successful (sorry guys).

Fingers crossed Cav can survive the hills and be part of a bunch sprint.

Thanks for the preview Bikex.

I was looking forward to this race for quite some time. Perfect route for Van Stayen, GVA as OP leadout or even contender on his own, Dzamastagic as possible X factor and Stoltz and Siskevicius could play a minor factor as well.

High expectations and i hope to not end up disappointed.

Really great preview Bikex!

A race that could be important for both PCT title, with Grieg having a couple of great options for a good result, and Isostar with Kump, and PT relegation battle, with Strava having Boeckmans, who could make them really close to safety if he has the legs of Het Nieuwsblad and Porto with Avelino, who should struggle with weak back-ups, but if on a good day...

Wisniowski! What a great ride from him again. Kind of surprised to see us so much in front of the peloton, but I guess we just had great belief in Lukasz. And then he did just what I hoped with a couple of strong attacks. Absolutely love that guy.

Looked like Rowe could fight for a top 10 also, but guess he just cracked/switched off at the end. Still some points for him in the end.

Mohs in 2nd place is a great result for Fablok, and makes the promotion fight even more interesting!

Thanks for the report and the video, Bikex. Really enjoyed seeing how it unfolded before reading up the report. Really cool.

Wisniowski is a beast. Happy for Grieg!

Glad we scored with some depth here. Not as sick as Evonik, but all our promising guys did well to finish in/around Top-25.

Thanks for the report!

Great final to an otherwise uneventful race. Strong attack from Wisniowski, quite like real-life Nibali in MSR. Congrats tastasol.

Didn't expect Avelino to feature the report, but seeing him well-positioned at the end gave me some false hopes. 30th still gives us 5 points which is better than zero Pfft Strava scored a handsome tally. Not too much but at this point every point could make the difference.

Wow, super strong Wisniowski! Very cool to see him win such a race, as he's a great rider for such races, at least on paper. Congratulations, tastasol!

For my own team, that was a pretty bad result, with no riders top 10. Seems like Kristoff and Trentin struggle to find out how to race when lined up together with no cobbles on the course, which is a thing I'll need to have in mind when planning the next season. Unfortunate to see that small group led by Evonik slip away from the bunch towards the end, as Kristoff looked pretty strong in the sprint.

Eventhough that has to go down as a bad race for us, we can only keep fighting for a top 10 overall. which I fear we needed a good result here for, as it'll be an uphill struggle in both Tasmania and Lombardia.

And thank you for the report, Bikex, enjoyed the video as well Smile

Ollfardh
Congrats Grieg, another great result for Wisniowski. Definitely ready for the PT.

Van Asbroeck looked good, but seemed dead in the sprint. Can't complain about a 7th place though. Great placing by Senni and Vanbilsen as well for some minor points.

Thanks for the report, Bikex!

This is getting ridiculous

Obviously love that result. Wisniowski is a beast and I love seeing hin win here but my beloved flat monsters stroke again. 3 in the top 6 (and especially Dzamastagic as our best finisher once again <3 ) and Van Stayen and Stoltz also in the top 15 is sick.

My team seems to overperform in every single race lately (except TTT ofc) and we now look on good track towards a rankings podium which would be amazing after spending 500k+ on a single level two rider. Huge amount of luck was needed to stand where we are but it's great to be here.

Good race for Strava. Gaining ~65 points on Porto Prio and Tinkoff is important. Now they need some good final performances from Bakelandts to end this season. the hope lives!

Thanks for the report and especially thanks for implementing the video. Loved to watch the final unfold Grin

Thanks for the report and video Bikex and congrats to Grieg.

Cav seemed to be in a great position with 5.5km to go but then just went backwards, bit odd.

Kind of forgot about this race, which makes it even more of a surprise to me. Though I just cannot let the fact slip, that we were once very Close to get Wisniowski and now he is out of reach for us for good, so that is obviously diaspointing. Now hopefully this is a sogn, that we can overtake Orange in the standings and maybe be lucky to promote
