Following the addition of two more cycling awards, Non-WT Stage Race of the Year and Non-WT Classic of the Year, we thought it would be a good idea to open a thread devoted entirely to the discussion of the Cycling Awards in general, that are listed below or in the main awards discussion thread:
Spoiler Rider of the Year
Surprise (Rider) of the Year
Team of the Year
Grand Tour of the Year (Nominations not necessary)
Grand Tour Stage of the Year
WT Stage Race of the Year
Non-WT Stage Race of the Year [New]
Stage (non-GT) of the Year
WT Classic of the Year
Non-WT Classic of the Year [New]
The cycling awards are the ones that generally get the most attention in the voting phase, but because the nomination phase might be tougher for most, they actually get the least nominations. This thread serves as a way to brush up everyone's memory about what happened during the 2017 calendar year.
What you can do in this thread:
- Mention any particular that you think was worth remembering about the 2017 cycling season: specifically, you can post info about particularly worthy races that you think might have been overlooked, riders that had special seasons etc.
What you can not do in this thread:
- Go off-topic. This thread is strictly dedicated to the cycling awards. If you want to discuss other awards, you're encouraged to do so in the main thread:
- Argue about why you think something another user proposed is not even worth nominating;
- Officially nominate something. That should still be done via a PM sent to me as instructed in the main awards information thread. |

I'd like to remind you guys that Christophe Laporte is eligible for the Rider of the Year Award, often he is assumed to be too good to be eligible, but I believe there is no such restriction, same with the epic race Vendee was for best non-WT classic.
Also, for stages, can we write stuff like, the Vuelta stage Contador won, the Dauphine Stage Fuglsang won or that epic stage in some Spanish race where some Quickstep rider like Vanderbergh or Keisse crashed in the final kilometres but still won or do we need to be give the specific stage number (and race name)?

Raul Alarcon for Surprise Rider of the Year and Volta a Portugal for (Non-WT) Stage Race of the Year. Alarcon won Vuelta a Asturias ahead of Quintana , finished second in Vuelta a Madrid only behind Oscar Sevilla and destroyed Volta a Portugal, with that epic stage when 3-4 riders of W52 brokeaway and went onto win the stage with a 6-minute gap to the first rider of other team.

Well enforcing such a rule wouldn't encourage discussion for sure, but of course if you're supporting a certain stage with particular enthusiasm you'll want to make it easier for people to nominate it officially

Surprise of the year: How about Primoz Roglic, having his final outing in World Class Races including the Tour de France stage win and the 2nd place in the Worlds ITT.

So, we can't just describe the stage in detail to nominate it?

Eh, I'll probably take anything and do the research by myself considering the absolute shortage of nominations the race awards got last year

I guess Calmejane would fit in the Surprise Rider nominations shortlist. TDF stage win, several minor stage races won in the first part of the season. Also, Michael Woods, finishing 7th in Vuelta without any previous great results in high mountain races

Y'all knew this was coming... Womens Cycling time
Rider of the Year - Anna van der Breggen; who completed the first ever Female Ardennes triple, won the Giro, won the Tour of Californai, won the WWT Overall and topped it all off with a World Championship medal. One of the most complete seasons ever!
Surprise (Rider) of the Year - Coryn Rivera; in her first full WWT season won de Ronde, RideLondon and Alfredo Binda (that's a cobbled classic, sprint classic and hilly classic), finished second in the Tour of Yorkshire and 3rd in Gent-Wevelgem. There was expectation, no-one predicted this level of success which would make any cyclist ecstatic.
Team of the Year - Boels-Dolmans; 28 wins, including 13 at WWT level. Had the years best individal in van der Breggen, were leagues ahead as a team yet again.
Gotta point them out

Are World Championships able to be nominated for the Non-WT Classic of the Year?

He's only a surprise for people who do not know him, Alarcón and W52 are currently the best cyclist and team of the whole world, this year was just the confirmation, 2018 will be total annihilation.
Anyway, as for surprise riders, let me mention Marco Canola from Nippo. Really impressed me this season with several good results in the Italian calendar, wether flat or hilly races. Kind of curious to see if he'll end up being that run-of-the-mill one season wonder, really common in Italy, or will he follow-up his racing next year. |

@FreitasPCM I didn't want to propose him directly for the Rider of the Year, something that he deserved to be nominated for, obviously

GT stage of the year has to be the one where Dumoulin sat down right?
