Giro dell'Emilia
Category: HC | 192,4 km | terrain: hilly | Italy |
The Italian PCT calendar closes out in Italy with the penultimate hilly classic of the season. At the Giro dell'Emilia, the revenge for Milano - Torino, it is all about attacking punching the best.
Last years winner Kelderman has helped his team to promote and thus is not here. Instead last years second and the winner of the year before, Cesare di Maggio, is there to improve his impressive scoresheet here. Also the other former winner here, Damiano Cunego, could well have some chances here.

It is maybe the hilly classic with the least impressive startlist this season. We miss Arrinera, Hugo Boss, Meiji & Indosat with several more due to HC bands. Instead it's a perfect chance for the minor riders to shine here.
Beneath the obvious Cesare di Maggio, who knows how to win this race, several other guys might fancy their chance still.
So the biggest favourites, on higher odds than the foreign star, should be Flügel and McCarthy. While the Aussie has those sweet energy stats that are highly competitive in PCT, the German has that up and down advantage, which should be equally useful in saving energy for the final climb.
Ayubowan is a special case. Gautier could've been a potential winner, but he'll most likely again have to work for Bellis which will shorten his chances drastically. The later, if not trained in the future, just lacks the pure ability to go over hills strong enough to be a winner in these type of races.
Klemme again flags up for CT, and has done nicely in Torino. Can he continue his form to attack the Top 3 again? For winning he lacks the fast punch here most likely. Same for Vogt, he is just not speedy enough to captain a team in any division. His team would be better with McEvoy alone here probably.
Beneath the spare amount of =>79 puncheurs (only 7!), we have a number of 78 puncheurs here. Strava, Euskaltel & Netia have a decent armada, and especially Sanchez Gil could work well from long range with his allround game. Waeytens needs to step up after some disappointing performances to do his team a big favor in the relegation battle, while the most interesting of 78 riders surely is Borges. If the spare list of favourites keep together until the last hill, the incredible acceleration of the portuguese could well make him a dark horse on winning this. Don't count him out!
And well, then we have two guys here that will put the hurts on anybody alone by standing on the startlist: I'm talking about former winner Cunego and Martin. Those classy climbers are about to try their luck at a puncheurs classic, and while the Italian has had some major success with it the Irish isn't completely sure about his role. Still, if they work their skillset well and if their team makes the race as hard as possible, the two of those working together could well turn this race into a direction the pure puncheurs won't like.
Having analyzed all favourites now let's watch the full startlist to learn about breakaway candidates and surprise factors:

Well Cunego, your chance to win a classic this year, go and grab it! Prevar, Konovalovas and Scarponi should be all the support, and probably more than that, than you probably need

From a "top 10 would be nice" to "anything pointwise would be nice" for a 78 hill rider. I had to lower my expectations a lot this season, but this is the first of two last chances for Waeytens.
Changed my sig, this was getting absurd.

Our final HC race of the season. Brought the strongest climbers we could, in the hope of this being rather difficult. So maybe Vasyliv or Campero can do something, otherwise we have to just hope to be aggressive.

This is HC not C1 right? Otherwise I'd have to fucking beat myself up for us not being here
I came totally prepared to see both Ayubowan and Ukraine on the podium, so everything better than that is a plus

Yeah, this is HC. And yet there's more chance of Ulissi being on the podium than one of my riders |

Good team present against an open field, Vanendert or Gilbert can sneak away with some points.
Thanks for the amazing coverage and fast pace Croatia! Incredible effort by you, much appreciated.

2nd last race of the season for Sanchez, I'd like to see him end the season well but don't really expect anything of him.
Expect Strava to win because they will anyway. Only wish I had some $PCM left to bid on Gilbert.
Thanks for yet another race Croatia and a great preview!

Hoping for something good or miraculous from my team here. Caruso should be looking to thrive in his home country's final hilly classic and Roy has been looking alright lately. This should be a good race!

Barbin or his mates nowhere to be seen and a very good race for Klemme unfortunately.

Surprised to see Klemme 5th on the favourites list in this HC race, could do far better than I expected, top 10 would be great.
Have sent the strongest team I could muster in the hope of keeping Klemme in with a shout at the end but it depends which Klemme turns up, his last 2 races have seen very different performances.
Great preview Croatia.

Cunego ahead of LLS.
Two legends of the MG still going strong here. Pity that next year they are a lot weaker. Might be their very last year of top PCT riders.
Also big race for Compal in their hunt of top20 even and also Lierse, who might have gotten the needed points here in relegation fight. Waeytens delivers and Cerny as a very nice bonus I`d say.
Azteca might have needed to score more.
Ayubowan the team, that can`t work cooperate it seems. Funny that Yates in the end their best.
Really feel sorry for Vontobel here. Bad year for Di Maggio to perform on such a low... |

Truly amazing, could not have asked for more here. The team looked pretty dominant with good tactics and 2 very strong men helping Cunego with Scarponi and Konovalovas. Ending your PCT career with a win in a HC classic you've won before in the case of Cunego is just stunning, and it reaaly confirms how much of an asset he has been to our now very likely promotion. Now onto Lombardia to really finish the season on an absolute high!
Thank you Croatia
