Philadelphia International Championship
Category: C1 | 173,0 km | terrain: bumpy | USA |
Ladies and Gentlemen welcome to the preview for this years Philadelphia International Championship. As done in the previous years this will be raced as a C1 race, and most likely a sprinter should take it as in most of the previous editions of this traditional Man-Game event. The former winners here are...
2010 | Philippe Gilbert | | Pendleton's Twicer | 2011 | Philippe Gilbert | | Pendleton's Twicer | 2012 | Juan José Cobo | | Team Bianchi | 2013 | Nolan Hoffmann | | Metinvest-Emirates | 2014 | Matti Breschel | | AMEXpc | 2015 | Arnaud Demare | | Team Puma - SAP |
..., sadly non of these find themselves on this years startlist. Might be the case cause the race lost it's former hilly caracter over the years and is more of a flat classic than it has ever been before. That is why we have other favourites than the ones that have won the race here before.
| FL | HI | ST | SP | AC | | FL | HI | ST | SP | AC | Lo Cicero | 72 | 64 | 71 | 84 | 78 | Granjel Cabrera | 75 | 68 | 75 | 80 | 77 | Avelino | 71 | 64 | 70 | 83 | 78 | Bouhanni | 74 | 63 | 74 | 80 | 77 | Guerao | 74 | 64 | 71 | 83 | 76 | Ulanowski | 73 | 58 | 71 | 80 | 77 | Vanderbiest | 74 | 64 | 74 | 82 | 77 | Haussler | 73 | 70 | 72 | 80 | 76 | Van Heerden | 73 | 68 | 74 | 82 | 73 | Van der Sande | 75 | 70 | 78 | 79 | 79 | Impey | 74 | 73 | 75 | 80 | 81 | Petit | 76 | 65 | 76 | 79 | 78 | Kupfernagel | 74 | 64 | 73 | 80 | 80 | Aberasturi | 74 | 64 | 73 | 79 | 78 | Drapac | 71 | 53 | 70 | 80 | 79 | Richeze | 72 | 65 | 71 | 79 | 77 | Van Asbroeck | 75 | 71 | 75 | 80 | 78 | Peeters | 72 | 62 | 71 | 79 | 77 | Lavoine | 73 | 60 | 71 | 80 | 78 | Santos | 71 | 64 | 71 | 79 | 75 |
These are the top sprinters of this years race. They will compete for the win if everything goes like it's planned, when we have a medium fast pace and a sprint finish. Lo Cicero looks to be the fastest of the more fatty sprinters, but the quartett of Avelino, Guerao, Vanderbiest and Van Heerden looks to be able to challenge him in terms of speed.
When things get a little tougher in terms of conditions and racing, then Impey could be the strongest man, having the best back-ups of these sprinters. Van Asbroeck and Van der Sande could be further names that would love to see a tough race and then could compete even for the victory with that back-up advantages.
The further names on the list should be able to compete for Top-10 positions, but realistically they are no candidates for the win.
But here goes another list with plenty of riers to have an eye on. They surely have no chances in a classic sprinting finish, but if there are several circumstances they have a shot on upsetting the favourites.
| FL | HI | ST | SP | AC | | FL | HI | ST | SP | AC | Thorsen | 61 | 54 | 63 | 82 | 85 | Jans | 76 | 74 | 74 | 74 | 74 | Kump | 74 | 76 | 76 | 79 | 80 | Kuznetsov | 76 | 70 | 75 | 72 | 75 | Reinhardt | 71 | 67 | 73 | 78 | 84 | van der Hugenhaben | 73 | 80 | 77 | 68 | 66 | Reimer | 75 | 75 | 77 | 77 | 80 | Bellis | 75 | 78 | 80 | 74 | 75 | Maes | 80 | 67 | 79 | 62 | 67 | Waeytens | 70 | 78 | 72 | 66 | 73 | Summerhill | 78 | 73 | 76 | 70 | 73 | Kadri | 73 | 76 | 77 | 74 | 78 | Baugnies | 78 | 72 | 80 | 65 | 73 | Rabon | 72 | 75 | 72 | 71 | 76 |
First of all we have 4 sprinters here that could upset the opponence in different ways. If the race is ultra-slow and Thorsen hangs on until the sprint he could take a top 5 out of this due to his furious acceleration. Reinhardt doesn't need it that slow, but with heavy headwinds his great Acc might make him a surprise contestant.
Kump and Reimer are completely the other way round, they need a very hard race especially on the steep sections. If that's the case then they are favourized if it comes to a sprint with maybe a reduced bunch.
If the steep sections have even more of an influence then don't count out the puncheurs here. There are the ones that clearly need a solo or a small group finish like van der Hugenhaben, Waeytens and Rabon. On the other side guys like Bellis and Kadri could benefit from a sprint of a medium sized group with 20-40 riders.
Finesseurs could also have a shot here, if crosswinds rip this race apart. Out of these Maes, Summerhill and Baugnies would need a very small group, while Jans and Kuznetsov would surely also take a bigger group to win this.
The final look of this preview will be on the trains here. We expect Coldeportes to set a train for Guerao, but with their flat stats they shouldn't be near as fast as Eritel for Impey. While Prio-Porto shouldn't have a train that is strong enough to contest there is Karcher with a decent shot. And finally Hugo Boss has a fantastic set-up for Kump if some heavy work over the hills has to be done before the sprint. To finish the train discussion Vanderbiest has a shot for getting a train, while the main favourite Lo Cicero will have to work his ways up from a good wheel.
Closing this one out we have the full startlist for you here:

Let's see here, top 5 favourite for sure with Vanderbiest, and we have made a few trains for him in the last few races, some with success, others not so much...
This race's profile is far from pan flat, but we should see a sprint. I do hope we form a train, and then if Ulanowski survives those speedbumps well enough we may be able to challenge for the win here, but I could certainly live with a top 5.

I'd love crosswinds with Baugnies in the action. But of course realistically Van der Sande is our only chance we have here and maybe we get a Top 5, or so. That'd be nice.

Finally back in action
Obviously I'll be rooting for a bunch sprint and with the way especially Vinther have ridden earlier in the season I think his support is better than the preview gives it credit for.

Somehow I thought this was cobbled when planning Kinda bad mistake as we could've had an ok team here.
Thorsen definitely to win here Otherwise maybe Impey. Nice preview Croatia.

Seeing how they have preformed so far this season it feels like you got Vedel Kvist instead and I got stuck with Vinther as you first thought
I dont have high hopes here but hopefully Reimer and Kruopis can get some pts here. |

Hope to see a Top 10 and I will be more than happy. Maes with 80 Flat should be fun to see, if he could either form a leadout or simply just attack "Cancellara"-Style!

Eventhough Demare won as the big favourite last season there were quite a few big time overperformer in this race. Most notably my own Smukulis grabbing a shocker podium in the sprint. I'm very curious if a similar rider can repeat such a performance this year...

Obviously we are not here to sprint, so looking from some ugly weather and a tough race that will keep this from being a sprint finish.

Great preview crotia!
Really hoping Kump will do better here than in the race Hilly/flat classic Guareo somehow mamaged to win. Need a big result now to keep our form up as South Africa is not going as hoped. So lets go team!

Our odd step into C1. Drapac's hill stat will probably be his disadvantage. Hoping for a top 10.

Rooting for an interesting race here, there's definitely the potential, both in the route and the startlist. Impressively complete preview.

Yeah, I was afraid that would happen with that small hill there... Looked like Romain was actually going faster than his result may make you think, looks like he was blocked in a bit on the left side of the road.

ffs
Kump and these tailor made sprinting classics are apparently no good match for Kump His best result still stands from a cobbled classic, which is pretty funny.
So, Hugo Boss was anywhere but the final, dissapointing, all these great options for a lead-out and we chose to leave Kump alone in the final..
To make it even better, the worse version of Kump had to win aswell But congratz viking, Reimer having a sick season!
And of course, thanks for a great report! Enjoyed the role-playing point of view all the way until the final
