Ringerike GP
Category: C1 | 193,1 km | terrain: hills | Norway |
The very best of the Pro Continental Tour puncheurs should have a meeting here in Norway for the Ringerike GP 2016. The hilly race has his most interesting part on a circuit raced 3 times before heading into the final hill to close the race out.
The race was only raced once: in 2011. And back in time there it was a stage race. We will see one stage winner of that race though in Flügel, who now races for Wiesenhof - Andritz but back then had some stage glory for TEAM Ikea - Bianchi.
He won as hilly stage back then. But does he have a shot today as well? We'll see from the favourites tableau!

The hill stat will be a main factor for today, but surely acceleration should play a role. Small influences could be seen by the stamina as well as depending on race pace and outdoor conditions also flat and mountain ability. For long range attacks resistance should be crucial, the circuit doesn't really fit these type of attacks though with the long "descent" before the final climb. But hey, who knows? It's PCM.
And that's why it's anybodys game, just take a look back how previous hilly classics worked out, like f.e. San Marino in CT and Grand Duche for WT. So here is the full startlist for the hilly race through norway:
To close it out there are three types of possible racing action, that could suit very different types of riders:
A slow race finishing in an uphill drag race on the last climb would be the perfect scenario for the guys with low back-ups and a high Hill stat, mostly preferred with decent acceleration. Guys for these scenario are Di Maggio, McCarthy, Flügel
and Gautier. All 3 have a good combination of a top-hill stat with more than decent acceleration and low back-ups.
A fast race with a low energy sprint would fit Kinoshita best. He could even be the fastest in the previous scenario. Anuar Aziz and Costa would also prefer that scenario, as it transforms the back-up stat focus more from acceleration to mountain, flat and even stamina.
An extraordinary pace seeing a race finish with split groups or even a solo attack from far out is the perfect scenario for Roche, although he could also finish well in an uphill drag race. van der Hugenhaben, Vogt and Klemme need a race like that for hiding their missing acceleration. They should have no chance in other race scenarios.
Some notable mentions for the under-80-hill riders are here for the punchy sprinters Bellis, McEvoy and Vastaranta. If they prove me wrong and the sprinters stat plays a role in a slow scenario then these could see a great finish. Bilbao, Bystrom, Ben Nasser and Betancourt should be mentioned for decent lower top10 chances. They shouldn't have a shot on winning this though.

Yep, great preview. Thanks for the detailed analysis!
Ringerike was planned as our one outstanding result in March... and as Differdange already went okayish, only a podium by Di Maggio can be outstanding. It is encouraging that in Flügel a similar type of rider is the only former winner.

For some reason I can't see us doing very well here.
But let's go for the win nonetheless |

Eh I initally put our name down for this because I thought Ulissi would only just make the RDs cut, but as I'm terrible at planning in advance, he really didn't and I had to avoid 1 race, which turned out to be this because it's C1 and possibly MO comes into play. I regret nothing really, that startlist is terrific.
I have Finetto and Molard and possibly someone else as hard top 10 hopes, so why can't they pull an upset I don't know, especially after Van Winden Viviani and Teunissen decided to upset their own manager in the worst of ways.

Thats a tough startlist for a C1 race, my hopes for a great result for homeboy Byström just decreased... |

That's a strong field. I have to be content if we get a top 10. It should be interesting as it is very hard to predict with no clear favorite. Nice preview!

One of those races were we have Palini and some more than decent hill depth, but it just pans out to a top 15 and 2 riders in the top 50. Amazing startlist though, so doubt we'll even manage that.
Kinosita is my pick to win, maybe Flugel, but hard to really tell. Seems like one of those finishes where hill stat is much more important than the other stats.
Thanks for the preview Croatia!

Kinoshita should crush this as the best puncheur in the division, if not I think McCarthy will take it. Saying it's a stacked startlist is an understatement. I'd be more than happy with a top 5 here, but a win would be wonderful.
Thanks for the preview!

Bet on Roche, good odds for a hilly, very slight mountain race. Startlist is the confirmation why I didn't bother to come here

Wanted to give Klemme a couple of days in PCT competition to see how he goes, looks like top 10 will be a good result.

Obviously hoping for a win, but I feel like we will grab 2nd or 3rd here, due to poor tactics.

Beautiful report, the lanterne rouge is a lovely touch, I at least have one of my riders in the report <3 I'm not mad at my riders, I'm used to anyway
Well, what the fuck is up with this Flugel guy? He's been overperforming since the start of the season and I can only think he got some huge luck so far with form! Or just best tactics? If we weren't sure enough Wiesenhof was going to dominate we're now 100% sure. Not surprising to read the rest of the top 10 though. Doubt Ulissi could have snatched more than a top 5 here in hindsight. Congrats Heine!

Bad bad bad. Hopefully Bystrom suffered from the crash otherwise he is really useless... On home ground as well.
And our other 76/75 hills riders could not really surprise either two guys in just top 30 .
Anyway thanks for the report Croatia and congrats Heine! |

Not the best race for us, I probably should send Waeytens some better support.
